Hear, hear. I totally agree with the opinion of FII being the best album
that OFB has put out. After getting I&W and being seriously let down by
Awake (and teased by ACoS), FII was a godsend, well worth the wait. I don't
like every song on the album (toss AL out, as far as I'm concerned), but
overall - one of the best albums I have ever heard.

Someone asked about Moaning women? i.e. sexually? You need 'Come' by Prince/The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. On the album of the same name. You also need Type O Negative's "Bloody Kisses" CD. Also, one of my favourite sample-rific moments is on 'Welcome To PLanet Motherfucker' on White Zombie's "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One", right at the start, with the little "unh", that is delayed out of time with the music. Man, I LOVE that bit. Honestly, it's why I haven't sold the damn CD. :) So that's I guess another "moaning woman". I'm doing a course at University on feminism and won't be writing a paper on this kind of stuff! Come on! My essay is on the portrayal of women in opera. :)

On one of my small tangents, one of my other favourite sample moments is on the new Blood Duster album, "Str8outtanorthcote", on track 2..... the "sample" is longer than the rest of the song. As a vague description, imagine an Aussie lumberjack irately abusing some kind of protester or something, who's defending a tree...... "go on, fuck off, or I'll cut ya prick off" Luverly.

If anyone in Tasmania, Australia is still on the 'Jam, and lives in the Hobart area, listen out for the University of Tasmania's Breakfast show, 2-4pm next Thursday (May 7). A friend and I will be taking over the airwaves at that point in order to expose some ignored musical happenings. So yes, there will certainly be Dream Theater played. I'll pos the track listing for anyone who is even mildly interested sometime. Tune in: 92.1 FM. Everyone else.... um..... get a kick-ass receptor!

I'm thinkin' "Pink Floyd - Great Gig In The Sky" might count, but maybe that's more of the 'extended moan' type.

Also, all the songs written about me.

In People news, at about 11:30am Eastern, Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf became the most beautiful person of the year, giving pretty boy Leo a resound thrashing.

Lastly, if I were to rate FII, I'd give it an "O" for Outstanding, or, if your school system is the let's-not-let-the-stupid-kids-know-they're-stupid-until-they-hit-junior-high sort, an "S", for Satisfactory, with the knowledhe that it should really be an "O" if it weren't for the dumb-children-self-esteem factor.

Hey all, just letting you know that I'd like to think I'll go to the Savatage show in atlanta on June 18...seing as I live here and work not 5 minutes away from the Masquerade. heh. Also, I just saw Max Cavalera's new band SOULFLY there this past Sunday night. If you don't know who Max Cavalera is...get out of your cave! If you miss hearing Sepultura songs live and thought you never would again, go see this show, 'cause about half the set was Sep. The oldest songs they did were Beneath the Remains and Dead Embryonic Cells. They also did 3-4 songs from Chaos AD and a BUNCH from Roots. There were also a coupla Nailbomb songs thrown in there as well...adding up to a respectable ~90 minute show. Ex-Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader is also playing guitar on the tour with Max, so that tells you how much this show kicks ass. The new songs that Max has written I like better than the ones off of Roots too, I think Max finally got that "pissed off metalhead from Brasil/jungly tribal sound" right.

Oh yeah, I've seen a few posts about that band Full On The Mouth...they were the first band to open for Soulfly. So, all of you that like them or are curious...They also handed out their demo tape with 2 songs on it, but I haven't listened to it yet. I wasn't there for their show but heard that they sounded like "a hard-core band that looked and sounded like van halen." <--- (????) I'm kinda scared to listen to the demo now! heh

Well, anyways, see all you people going to PHilly's DT show in a couple of weeks!

ATTN: MIKE PORTNOY, check out SOULFLY man...some cool stuff going on on that cd.

I know you were all waiting for this one. So, I will actually go on with my report card of the aging of FII. Bear in mind that I was at the fix for 96 shgows, and I have heard the mp3 demos.

    1. NM: I still love this song, and would crank it up on my 300 watt stereo with jbl pa speakers if I didn't have to worry about destroying the foundation of my house. Maybe now that I( live in the garage ... was an A, still an A and always will be an A.

YNM: Yes, I heard YOM and like YOM better. Whilest I do skip YNM, I had hopes for this song on rock radio. Too bad it didn't work. I think it did get some help for the band in Jersey, though, as the trade winds show was sponsored by a local radio station. 95.9 and 105.5 played this song, and if it weren't DT, I think it would be only slightly above averge. But, it's DT and I did expect more, although it is a great alternative song. C and always stays at C

PS: Has never changed from the demo version. I love the pink floyd intro, and love how the song kicks your ass into the metal mode. Definitely a B and always will be a B.

HY: I hate the single edit version. But this song grew on me quickly. Wish it would've taken off, but hey, radio blows the dick anyway. Was a C, now a B.

BMS: OH, yeah, I love the demo more. I like HK in the middle, I love the fact that the demo was more prog. I hate the vocoder echo of burning my soul in the chorus, just let MP or whoever yelled it out in the demo do it.. But when the album version si=unk in, it was good, on its own terms, but still left me a little cold. Was an A, now a B.

HK: Nice, emotional, but not ytsejam, which is still my favorite instrumental. Does get a bit monotonous, but I like the emotion involved and I love how it transitions into LITS. B, all the way. but lately is sinking to a b-. Probably will sink more as the emotion fades away. ultimately a C.

LITS: Wow, baby, if this song was a woman, I would marry it. A, A, A, A. I like this version more than the demo. The demo was awesome at an A. I would give this an a+ and would go higher if I could.

TAMP: The demo was wonderful, and I am not one for 80s cheesey metal. When I heard the album version, I was shocked and think it is still too happy, but this song still says it all if you have had a loss. this song has a few grades, started at a B, went down to a C, abut is back to a B.

JLMB: I like the idea, but somehow this one just doesn't do it. I love it live, though. C.

AL: This song at first was a D. But then, I really listened to it and now I love it. I can't get it out of my head. B.

TOT: Nobody mentioned the Xanadu sounding intro to this song in their review lately, so I will, just to shove it up all your asses. HAHAHAHA. I don't think this song is an a, maybe an a-, or a b+. I can't exactly say why. Definitely one of the top three, but it is number three of the top three. I would love to see it live. And yes, I am a reject, while I love scarred or scars, whatever it's called, (rush and dt convfusion, definitely), I don't love it like I probably should, though I loved it live in 95.

Anybody who differs can bite me. Flame me if you must, but it's not warranted. I don't have much to say about the B sides, and I will agree with Mike about FII not taking IW from the top spot, but FII is still a great DT album and I think I like it better than most people do, but then again, who the hell knows.

What's with all this silliness? Why are we all discussing DT's FII? I thought this was a Metallica / Grammar / Flame Sony & Mike Bahr mailing list? ;-)

Well, I'm listening to FII right now (on a sony 5-disc mini that I'm extremely happy with), and thinking about the recent FII thread (thanks Mike for bringing along a great thread).

    Here's my 2 cents (I'll be brief)......

NM: I didn't care much for this one at first for some reason. It's really grown on me, and now I'd rank it pretty high.

YNM: It started weak, but has grown on me A LITTLE (still feel it's lacking though).

PS: I loved this tune right out of the gate, and still do (though a few other songs passed it up on my list of favorites). My 3rd or 4th favorite off FII.

HY: Once again, always loved this one. I don't care if everyone says it's cheesy (remember I'm the same person that defends Innocence Faded 'til the end of time), it's up near the top on FII.

BMS: Not great, but it does serve a good purpose as being a straightforward, hard rocking song (felt this way all along).

HK: I've always thought HK was good, but not as good as Erotomania or Ytse Jam (It certainly doesn't have as much WOW! factor).

LitS: Call me crazy but for some reason this song didn't sit really well with me at first (don't know why). It has grown on me tremendously though, now I rank it tied for best on FII. Pinnick's vocals add to the song as well.

TAMP: I pretty much liked this one at first, and still do. Haven't heard the demo though.....

JLMB: I hated this song at first (least favorite, next to YNM), probably because of the very straightforward, non poetic DT-type lyrics. Still, the anti-eMpTyV theme rang true with me. JLMB has grown on me ALOT though.

AL: At first this one probably my 3rd LEAST favorite, but it's really aging well. I like it quite a bit now.

ToT: Started out as my favorite, now is tied with LitS for my favorite. Myung rules!

Summary: At first, FII was a bit of a disappointment. Through the months though, it has only grown stronger and stronger. I probably listen to it more now than before (except for the first week or so, of course). I still prefer I&W and Awake, but let's face it: DT has refused to be stagnant, and is NOT RE-HASHING I&W. We should respect them for that.

On a side note: Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf is now in first place! He's also ranked something like 40th, with a different spelling (minus the comma). So keep him ahead, place your vote now! :-)

Thanks for listening, - Joe DeAngelo

All this talk of how well FII aged has me thinking. How would DS or MP, the only two net savvy people in DT right now, rate this album's age factor, or even their other albums' age factors. Naturally, Derek can only comment on ACOS, but still the drum god, MP has to have an opinion on this. Calling you out of hiding, Mr. Portnoy.

While this probably doesn't classify as "moaning" per se, I always thought the girl at the beginning of Vai's "I Would Love To" ("You know, I'm very very shy") always sounded really sexy.

Other than that, there's a (overused :) sample of a woman moaning in Anthrax' "Startin' Up A Posse," on the Killer B's album.
