I got my DT ticket to the Daytona's show. It says doors open at 8. I
haven't ever been to Daytona's. I have been to it's former name A.L.
Gators. But what time does the main band come on at Daytona's? I figure
doors open at 8. The opener comes on at around 9. DT comes on at
10:30-11pm. Those that went to the Malmsteen show, what time did he come
    on?

As for a song with moaning women, try "Sex" by Kix.

I pretty much agree with Mike's take on Metallica and early Rush, so I will start replying to part 3:

I agree with pretty much everything Mike said about Signals and p/g.

    > Power Windows marks a more optimistic turn of Rush's themes... things

Ehhh... I wouldn't say optimistic. Maybe more level-headed, or down-to-earth.

    > have never been quite as bleak in nature as p/g. Power Windows is > easy... it deals with power. Big Money with the power of avarice. Grand > Designs with the power of individuality. Manhattan Project with the > power of war and destruction. Marathon with the power of endurance.

Out of those, avarice, war, and destruction don't really fit the "optimistic" theme you sense. I would probably say that PoW is a break away from feelings and nature-stuff, and a sharper focus on human nature, which leads into HYF.

    > It's [PoW] very concise and is probably the best thematic > presentation since Moving Pictures.

More so than the Atlantic albums? I don't see that. An interesting note: I never really saw the thematic relationships within albums until you wrote these posts. Thanks for shedding some light.

    > find excitement and enjoyment in anything and everything. TSS is > easier... it's Rush's masterpiece, and deals with the instinctual need

Lyrically, I'm inclined to agree. But musically, I just don't feel right calling TSS anything more than "a really good song." On the same album, Prime Mover hits me a lot more deeply, musically. And then there's Natty Sci, Hemispheres, ...

    > something he hadn't touched much on before, in Mission. Mission deals > with our instinctual question, "Is there a divine being? Is there a > God?" Who indeed sets the wheels in motion? Who runs behind the scenes? > It isn't us, but we THINK it is. How do we corroborate this?

Interesting. That'll take some more thought for me to agree or disagree with.

It's "Dirty Little Mind." Some other songs off hand: Bon Jovi "Social Disease" Manowar "Pleasure Slave" (I think, not sure on this one) Steve Vai "Road to Cavalry" (is that right? - the track right before "Down Deep Into The Pain" on the album Sex And Religion.) That Meatloaf song 'Paradise (By the Dashboard Light)' or whatever it's called during the baseball segment. The chick in the background gets going pretty good as the guy tries for the suicide squeeze ("Here's the play at the plate, Holy Cow, I think he's going to make it!"). Imus played that segment of the song this morning so it's still in my brain.

    Hey jammerz!

I'm bored at work, thought I'd write a bit about some of the highs in my life lately..

Saturday night I went to see this local band from Ottawa, called Limelight, they are a tribute to Rush.. it was my second time seeing them.. they played an excellent setlist (2 one hour sets, stuff from 1976-1982) and the drum solo was phenominal. I actually taped the show.. sounds pretty good.. their next show is tentativaly May 22 (if you're in the Ottawa area.. check them out, email me for details)

After lunch me and my friend we decided to check out this used store.. I found a Boot from Rush,, called Be Careful with that axe, Alex.. pretty kewl bootleg, sounds good.. was recored in Ottawa and Toronto, also picked up Fates Warning's Parellels.. wow.. Good album.. listening to it right now.. I had 3 from them before.. now I have 4.

There is this local chat here in Ottawa.. and I met this girl.. she's a bigger Rush fan then me.. needless to say. we met.. started going out the week after... wow.. the wonders the Net could bring to your life! :o)

On Friday, I'm going to see this professional tribute band called The musical box, tribute to Genesis of course... they are members from Montreal and Toronto.. Selling England by the Pound tour.. it should rock!

I'm putting a band together.. we're called Infiltrate... but we might change to Shadowvale... anyhow... the guitarist.. who would be lead.. im rhythm cuz i suck =) his fave guitarist is Petrucci.. he is a big DT fan.... thats my DT content for this post ;)

I called this prog cd store.. near my area.. asked bout the prog fest in Quebec city. cuz me and my friend we definately wanna go.. it's in June.. but still no idea who will play... does anyone know? Also... I wanna purchase the lastest Arena album The Visitor,, has anyone heard it yet?

    s'all for now

    ciao!

I gotta agree with this one. I had the opportunity to pick up the Engel single last summer, with a couple extra songs thrown on, including "Rr-r-r-r-r-RAMM................STEIN!" Unfortunately, I did not do so. DAMN empty wallets!

    >Did anyone else get the two song video of this? It has Du hast and Engel >on it. Both of which are some pretty messed (but wild) up videos.

I've seen the video for Engel. Now this begs the question: was this made before or after the movie From Dusk Til Dawn? B/c the similarities between the video for Engel (kooky shit) and the first scenes in FDTD when they enter the bar (before the bloodbath and bad effects) are STRIKING. Just wanted to know, since I thought I probably would not be the only one to notice. It was a bad movie, btw...funny in its own twisted manner though.

Oh, what an UNFAIR comparison, you think...

Pathetic?! I think Petrucci has got to be one of the most emotional and passionate players of his technical calibre. For example, the solo at the climax of LTL, LSOAD, Erotomania, Kindred Spirits (in the solo, starting off with bass and clean guitar), also, a lot of the material on Rock Discipline (Hmmm, MS Word's grammar check would probably kick the crap out of that sentence, good job I don't bother with that program). On Lost Without You, his playing just blew me away.

Although Vai and Satch did some amazing stuff too; For The Love Of God, Rescue Me Or Bury Me (Please excuse my ignorance in Satch's material, since I only own one of his CDs, which reminds me, Crystal Planet's another one for the 'to get' list), Petrucci definately does not fall short of any of the emotion in Vai's playing.

    FII aging:

New Millenium -initially: B now: A

Probably grew on me the most. I liked it from the start, but songs like that take a few listens before you can really "get" them. Different and in ways more "modernized sounding" in parts than other DT, but hey, what's wrong with that? Excellent song.

You Not Me -initially: B+ now: B

Never hated this as much as other people did, especially compared with TAMP. A little poppy, true, but it still has a feasible amount of weight to it, IMO. Agreed that You Or Me is better, however. Doesn't really either: 1)turn to gold or 2)rot with age, IMO.

Peruvian Skies -initially: A now: A+

I'm a huge Metallica fan. What can I say. Love it.

Hollow Years -initially: B now: B+

A solid ballad. From the start, something about this song reminded me of Dave Matthews. I have no idea what and why. Not close to being my fave on the album, but a really good song nonetheless.

Just Let Me Breathe -initially: A- now: A-

Lyrics that get the point across well combined with a big metal groove. Freakin' awesome live. Not really any change in my opinion over time.

Anna Lee -initially: B+ now: A

I've tried and tried but I've not been able to understand the backlash against this song. I think this is EASILY the best ballad on the album, no contest. The melody just soars; freakin' HUGE! Up there with Surrounded in my book.

Burning My Soul -initially: A+ now: A

Like the other guy said, I'm a metalhead at heart, so I love this stuff. Big, fat, monster riff. Initially probably my favorite, but eventually the excitement wears off a bit on simpler (by way of comparison) songs like this.

    Hell's Kitchen -initially: B- now: A

At first I was slightly disappointed, because I was comparing it with the untouchable Erotomania. But this is a very, very good work in its own right. The one word that describes this song to me is subtle. By that I mean that the best parts are more understated than they were in the other instrumentals; they don't knock you out of your seat the first time you hear them.

Lines in the Sand -initially: A now: A+

What can you say? We all know it's bloody awesome. Started that way, and only improved with time. EASILY the best lyrics on the album, right up there with Voices lyrically. Petrucci can write lyrics like a monster when he uses this style (more symbolic, less straightforward); that's just what I prefer.

Take Away My Pain -initially: D- now: F--------------------------

I literally hate this song. I hate this song more than any DT song ever written. No offense to JP's late father or those of you who identify strongly with the lyrics; I just cannot stand it. This song is basically Wisconsin put to music. But with even more cheese. I just don't like the simple, MEGA-CLICHED lyrical style at all. I'd even take Innocence Faded above this song. Just not what I go for, plain and simple. I am intrigued about hearing the demo, though.

Trial of Tears -initially: A now: A+

Amazing, amazing; what a journey. I've just always thought the ending reprise is so unbelievably powerful. What a way to end an album. *All of the above has obviously only been my opinion; if you disagree, you are perfectly entitled to the right of being wrong.*

    :) Just kidding, of course.
