Hehe.. with all this ranting about "moaning women". Have anyone ever
heard moaning men in music? If "Pumping Iron" has a soundtrack I guess
you'll find it there. Anyways.. as far as I know, I don't believe
moaning men will be on record until Spice Girls releases their next full
album : "Men has feelings too".. :)

On the subject of fast guitar:

Guitarist - Steve Vai Song - For The Love Of God Album - Passion and Warfare

Lots of folks can play fast when the notes are close together, but what Steve does in that song about mid-way through is kinda like doing a split with your fingers at Mach4. Absolutely blinding speed from one end of the neck to the other. Where's my drool bucket........

    Hi!

I'm looking for a boot from this show. This was my first "real" concert ever, not just by Dream Theater, and it was an extremely pleasent experience. I'd love to have a boot from this show as a souvenir, and would appreciate it alot if someone could help me out!

Well I've been driving aboot all day, roaming throughoot the hills of Ontario searching for those DT license plates - withoot a doot the coolest thing to see on any root while in Canada. Don't poot if you don't find any, they're kinda hard to pick oot, ey?

"Furthermore, 'One I Want' can be thought of as 'Big Fat Money' part II." Yeah, and "Big Fat Money" can be referred to as "Play With Me" part II. Talk about Van Halen meets Extreme...

"Advanced students will go westwards and try to interpret Bafu Vai." Last November I moved to Bethesda, Maryland. I live on the East Coast now. Damn good post, though. :)

Someone said a while back that the intro drum beat to "Hot For Teacher" was humanly impossible. Why?

Ernesto Schnack: Thanks a million, let me know if you ever need a transcription. :)

    Tim Lodge. Hi.

For those of you who like to annoy the hell out of people, especially while driving, might I suggest my most recent discovery: Both "Hook" by Blues Traveler and "I Don't Wanna Wait" by Paula Cole feature choruses based on the Pachelbel's Canon chord progression. The next time one of them comes on the radio, try singing the other one over it. Sure to draw at least one big and loud "WHATda HELLayoo DEWing??" from someone in the car.

Or you could start a cover band and merge these two songs together into a master mix. Bet that'd impress the hell out of the clueless non-musicians in the crowd. "Wow! You're good! I've never heard a band do that! You guys are better than Nine Miles!!"

The aging of FII. My thoughts on several of the songs have evolved as they usually do into more detailed reactions than "I like it." or "It sucks." or "These guys got nothin' on Green Day." or "Desmond Child is DA MAN!" or "When the fuck is Petrucci gonna learn how to play some REAL guitar?" I still think "New Millenium" is a great great piece of music. I'd like to hear this at every show kind of like how I'd like to hear "Metropolis, Part 1." Not that hack stuff where they "bring it in" after a solo with Myung on the Chapman--THE WHOLE SONG. "Just Let Me Breathe" will still be my music of choice when I direct the Uncanny X-Men movie, for the scene where Longshot and Wolverine get cornered in a crowded nightclub owned by the Yakuza. Chow Yun Fat and a wall of strobe lights will also just happen to be there in the club. The keyword will be "chaos."

If you take the chronological G.I. Joe hierarchy of villains and parallel it with Dream Theater, you may get something like this:

Cobra Commander - LaBrie. Frontmen full of anger who are really good at cursing. Neither one is taken as seriously as they'd like to be. Destro - Petrucci. The true "prime movers" of their respective organizations. Both continue to evolve and surprise their opposition, Petrucci with his licks, Destro with those damn wrist- and ankle-rockets always unexpectedly getting him out of a jam. Zartan - Portnoy. Colorful individuals who add a certain "human" touch to their surroundings. Both add muscle and humor. Dr. Mindbender - Myung. Silent and thoughtful, these men are strategists. Neither one ever takes complete control, but prefers to take a background position, letting their decisions be felt instead of seen. Serpentor - Sherinian. Loud, obnoxious, and kind of crazy. Both are reckless hellspawns brought into their groups long after those groups were formed. "You will be my bitch! THIS...I COMMAAAAAND!!"

As for Kevin Moore, only one villain came to mind: Nemesis Enforcer. Both were there from the beginning, even BEFORE the beginning if you know their stories. Quiet guys. Snap tempers. Or perhaps the Masters of the Universe would offer better character-parallels for Moore...

Crap... I just read my post again, and yeah, I forgot to mention Hell's Kitchen. As far as the instrumentals go, I like HK the best by a lot. Just a very moving and emotional piece of music - I haven't come close to tiring of this one yet. Regarding their other instrumentals, I love Eve, but I wish they'd kept the samples. Erotomania rox nadz, but it took a long time for that to grow on me. YtseJam as a "song" never has done much for me... but as a vehicle to highlight DT's chops, it RULEZ! :-)

You know Al, you never specified if these moans were pleasurable or painful.

For pleasure, Type O Negative has some great stuff on "Bloody Kisses." Def Leppard has some female moanings at the beginning of "Exciteable" from the album "Hysteria." Steve Vai utilizes woman's voices moaning, squealing, and speaking French on the song "The Riddle" from the album "Passion & Warfare." (that song is one giant auditory parallel for the crescendo of sexual intercourse, so try not to get too excited while listening) T-Ride has a woman moaning at the beginning of "Fire It Up" from their out-of-print self-titled gem of an album.

For an example of agonized, tortured moaning, Steve Vai has a sample of his wife giving birth running throughout most of "The Road To Mt. Cavalry" from the album "Sex & Religion." In fact there's a part near the end of that song where she just belts out some loud, very painful, very disturbing screams. "Down Deep Into The Pain" has more moaning in the background during the second half of the song that may be interpreted as pleasureable but in actuality is not...in fact you can even hear a nurse/friend counting "and 1, 2, 3" for the breathing process...

Now that I think about it, "Bloody Kisses" has pleasure AND pain. Oh those gothic S&M types, so cheeky...

Also, I forgot to mention that in that X-Men movie scene, DT will actually be IN the club, performing "Just Let Me Breathe" WHILE the fight is going on. During the guitar-keyboard solo section LaBrie will suddenly get all pissed off because everyone in the club is fighting and being disrespectful to the band, and will leap down into the fray to join Wolverine, Longshot, and Chow Yun Fat lay into the Yakuza like a ton'a bricks!! Then Guile will bust through the wall and start flash-kicking tables at random!! In fact, you might wanna start pre-ordering tickets for the premiere NOW...

Yes, while Nuno does kick as much ass as anyone else when it comes to shredding, Nuno uses a very short delay on the intro to He-Man Woman Hater. So he's actually only playing EVERYOTHER note that you hear. Just like Petrucci does on the solo to Surrounded. The delay becomes more obvious when Nuno starts tapping towards the end and the delay creates a harmonizing effect. But mind you, I'm not taking anything away from Nuno. Just thought I'd fill you in on that cool little trick! Justin

This was played with a delay effect - Nuno is playing half the speed that you are hearing. It's still a very difficult piece to play - your timing has to be perfect in order for the delayed notes to fall in the right place. Nuno's a great guitarist, but he doesn't match up to Stump, Gilbert, Impelliteri, Shawn Lane, etc in terms of pure speed. His funky technique made for some AMAZING Extreme solos tho..

    >And about JP's covering the emotionative playing department, what about Jim Matheos?

With APSOG, I definitely agree with your statement about Matheos' emotive playing. However, I would never attach the word "shred", even with a modifier like "not fastest", to Jim's playing. As far as technique goes, he doesn't compare with the masters being discussed (Petrucci, Vai, Satch, etc). He's still a good guitarist, and shows some well-roundedness in his solo disc _First Impressions_.

    >Besides, all of the guitarists mentioned above wouldn't have much of a clue how to fit their exotic scales into the context of a rock song if Steve Morse and Frank Zappa hadn't of done it first.

That's a strong statement. I only hear a Morse influence, in terms of technique and phrasing, in Petrucci's playing. I haven't heard much Zappa, but I imagine if he sounded like Vai, Satch, or Petrucci then I would have heard more about him in guitar circles. In either case, I think Morse is the most well-rounded player of all these guys.

Check out any Steve Morse Band album, or some of the classic Dregs discs like _What If?_..

    guitaristically, -Neil.
