Glen I hear ya! My girlfriend lives out in El Paso, TX and she flew in to
Dallas to go see DT play in Fort Worth at the Caravan of Dreams. A couple
of months into our relationship I made copies of Images & Words and Falling
Into Infinity onto tapes and mailed them to her and she loved them. She had
mentioned hearing Pull Me Under on the radio in the past and recognized it
but hadn't heard much else from DT. So I am glad to say that my girlfriend
is a Dream Theater freak just as I am!!

Anyone can buy spare jewel cases at computer stores or even some used CD
stores will sell you some spare ones. You can replace the bad ones in your
collection and throw them away so that none of your CDs will get scratched
or fugged up. Visit your local computer store or a used CD shop.

I am not sure if it was Chris P's point, but this meant a lot to me. I can't
tell you how many CDs I fall in love with only later realize just how
technical (or not) something is. I had Dream Theater's Images and Words CD
and was trying to get my other friends into it. Before I even hit play they
would always ask "so do these guys shred?" My response was "yes and no. They
are proficient, but I wouldn't say they are they are the going to amaze you
with their chops." The reason I said this because I was listening to the
music, not really the chops of the album. After I was asked this question a
couple of times, I began to listen to the CD from a chops perspective. It was
then I REALLY understood just how much each and every member was SHREDDING.
Point is - I didn't decide if I liked the album because of the shred factor,
why should anyone?

Sorry to nitpick calvin, but when you wrote this:

you were wrong. Hehehe. You added 1.5 beats instead of .5. The correct
way would be counted allowed like this:

We dont want to confuse the nonmusicians so I just thought that I'd set the
record straight. (okokok, so i've just been watching my portnoy video 24-7
and felt the urge to apply that information!)
The stuff up top was just to get to my main point. I was wondering, when
the dude brought up the original question about time sigs and how to count
the pulse, how many other non musicians are there on the jam? I had always
assumed that 99% of Dream Theater fans were musicians or at least had some
musical background. I know for myself that its what I first found so damn
appealing about the band; they could play the shit out their instruments
and make damn good songs too! Mind you, FII was the first DT album I heard,
but the others came in quick succession. I loved New Millenium right from
the start and the whole album eventually blew me away...with the exception
of ToT. (I still don't like that song...heheh) But for me, Dream Theater
is a mirror image of what I would like to be able to do, and to become in
life. I fiddle around on the skins occasionally but don't put too much time
towards it. (yeah, so I lack motivation...) I admire this band for their
musicality and ability to blow away virtually any other band out there in
the talent area. So, I guess I was taking a holier-than-thou attitude that
only musicians knew of Dream Theater. I've always felt that were something
special to me...and to the other musicians out there. I've spurned the
commoners on the outside and will never look back. But, after the time sig
question, I guess my bubble was shattered. This makes me quite curious, how
many people out there have NO musical background? And what is your absolute
favorite thing about DT? Catchy song righting? Their guitarist is cute?
Anything. I want to hear it. Thanks, I'm done for the night.

Actually, it isn't in 4/4. I absolutely HATE when a transcription shows "4/4
with a swing feel" to imply 12/8. It makes it so much easier to break away
from that fucking swing feel.
This song begins in 12/8. The dotted quarter note gets the beat/pulse. So
every third eighth note gets the beat.
1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4 and a
Four total pulses - divided into three eighth notes. This is what I mean when
I say COMPOUND TIME. This intro is in compound time as opposed to simple
time. 4/4 is simple time.
Sorry to nitpick, but I think the comprehension of simple/compound time is
very important in the development of feeling sigs not in 4/4.

Is John Petrucci the BEST guitarist out there? Probably not. But does he
suck? Only if you take away his chops, sense of melody, and precise timing.
Otherwise, he is on a very high level in my book.

Typical? So bass players typically tap ala Metropolis, hit harmonics ala
Lifting Shadows, play dual lines ala Scarred, and venture out of simple lines
for that matter? I do think Myung has a couple of problems though. 1) He
produces a disgusting pop noise when he plays fast 2) His timing could be
stronger (listen to The Mirror). That is just nitpicking though. I don't
know if it is possible to play that fast on bass with a clear tone and not
produce a popping sound (I'm not a bass player) and the timing problems are
small (still well above the TYPICAL player by far)

I used to think DT could do better, but when I really think about it - he fits
the band perfectly. And when people put him down for his live performances,
just remember instrumentalist can "tune up" their instruments with new strings
etc. A vocalist IS the instrument and can't go into the shop for some new
vocal cords to change out the overplayed ones.

Derek has added a new dimension to DT (and it isn't the commercial one every
jammer is trying to pin on him and Shirley). However, to say that DT would
have disbanded without him is a very strong statement. One which I do not
agree with.

I agree. Although I would go so far to say Petrucci and Portnoy are the core
of DT. If either left, then it just wouldn't be DT anymore. As a couple of
albums are produced with Sherinian, Derek may achieve DT core status -
although it will be a new-era DT.

yeah, i mean, moore left, so they looked for a new keys player... tried
rudess, tried derek, liked derek, hired derek. If they hadn't liked derek
they'd probly have kept on looking. Heh, it happenned with both DT and
Megadeth - a temporary replacement became an official bandmember. So
remember that kiddies, if you're ever hired as a temporary rpelacement for
a band who's lost a member, keep in mind that it's probably a really long
job interview. :) Moo.

You are not alone! I absolutely loved this album from the get-go. I had no preconceptions about it or anything, at the time I was not a member of this list, so I was completely uninformed, I mean, not even hints of rumors of flames, here. For me, it was just the next album from DT, and I thought, wow, it's been a while, I wanna hear this. And it floored me. In its little case, it's just another album. In the stereo, it grabs my attention. The tape has been in the car for weeks. No matter what mood I'm in, whether I'm ready to rock, need some metal, or am in a more mellow mood (most rare occassions), no matter what song comes up on the tape, it always works out. I must say, the more I listen to Falling into Infinity, the more I love it. And that is all a resounding IMO.

Yeah, I tend to kind of agree with you. The reason I dig Pantera is that I think they have some of the most wicked riffs around. I mean, usually they only use no more than 2 riffs per song, but from a rhythmical point of view, these riffs just create some very fertile ground for a drummer. That explains my interest in them. Often, Vinnie Paul has some pretty neat ideas for his drum parts during these riffs, but sometimes I can come up with something which I think is more interesting (I'm not a drummer, mind you, just a wanna-be at the moment; I just like thinking about this stuff). Now, I've always ASSUMED it's Dimebag who writes most (if not all) of these riffs. It would have been interesting to see how LTE would have turned out if he had been involved. This reminds me of something else. I've always wondered about MP's interest in Pantera (ever since I heard that little thing in the middle of his solo on LiT). I mean, this guy was pretty much raised on old-school prog (Rush, Yes, Kansas, etc.). What in the hell got him into Pantera? BTW, since the recent time-sigs discussion has sparked a side-threads on polyrhythms, check out the band Meshuggah, folks. If the soundclips (and the 2 full tracks) I have from this band are any indication, these guys THRIVE on polyrhythms. Truly wicked shit. Heavy-as-lead guitar riffs laid over wacked-out drumming. Must be heard.

That is because this is an incorrect belief, Stodge. :) The correct answer is "Flying in a Blue Dream" with "Crystal Planet" being right behind it. I would put "Joe Satriani" just above "Not of This Earth", which makes it the second worst-sounding Satch album. And "Not of This Earth" can be excused for sounding raw; it was Joe's first album and released in '86. "Joe Satriani" came out three short years ago, and I *still* think there is no excuse for what Glyn Johns did to Satch's trademark sound.
Since my discussions about Satch tend to get *long*, if you wanna take this up with me, do it via private email. I'm sure the 'jam will thank you. :)

Yes. Personally I always felt he didn't belong there; his musical ideas and influences didn't match Testament's straight-ahead thrash style (which, by the way, is the same reason Alex Skolnick left the band).

I haven't listened to "The Ritual" in years but "Souls of Black" and "Practice What You Preach" are both worthwhile discs. No growling vocals; although Chuck Billy does have an unremarkable voice, he sings rather than screams or growls. Skolnick's tasteful solos inject a healthy shot of real melody into the chunka-chunka-chunka of the thrash playing.

I have to second this one. "Vovin" has been in my player nearly constantly since I received it yesterday, only swapping out with AOI, which I also received yesterday. It isn't quite on the same level as "Therion" goes, guitar- and bass-wise, but the orchestrations and choirs sound *much* better, cleaner, and superbly layered. The wall of guitar and bass sound that was so powerful on "Theli" has lost some of its elemental strength, but this is still a VERY good disc.

No death-metal growls, exactly, but Ralf Scheepers (ex-Gamma Ray) takes lead vocals for one song, and IMHO is totally unsuited for it. His voice just grates on my ears, sounding completely raw and unmusical (and I don't mind death-metal growling sometimes -- this just sounds *bad*). Maybe he was mixed poorly, but if he sounds like that on all the Gamma Ray discs, I may have to reconsider picking their stuff up.
