Hi all, The wife & kids bailed out for the weekend to go fishing up at our lake cabin. This left me home alone with thoughts of doing permanent hearing damage as I was planning to test the dual Hafler 500s ability to push the 22 driver JBL/Altec array to an amplitude capable of breaking golf balls.
Before my master plan had a chance to unfold... the phone rang. A long time friend of 20 + years called me to see what I had planned for Saturday night. Well, after a short discussion we decided to get together, grill some dead cow, (sorry, Cow God) rent a movie, and watch some music videos. So... He and his sweetheart arrived and the evening began.
I decided to play the Fates Warning APSOG video while the charcoal was heating up. Of course the big sound system was implemented for the task of audio playback. Most people would be bored as hell, right? Not these folks. Her first comment was how awesome Ray Alder was. After the video was over and the grill was ready, she asked if the music was available on CD!
After we ate, we settled down to watch the movie "Tucker." When that was over I inserted the DT live in Tokyo video. I think she reached orgasm sometime during Ytsejam. This was her first exposure to DT & FW. Both He and she could not say enough about the two bands.
Sunday afternoon He called back to tell me that the second his girlfriend woke up she went on a CD & Video shopping spree. Her purchases included: FW APSOG CD & video, FW Parallels. DT's FII, ACOS, and I&W! Sunday night he called back... He said "the second she got home she pulled the recliner over by the stereo and put the headphones on. It's been four hours now, and every time I try to get her fucking attention she gives me a dirty look" I told him to grab one of the discs she has already listened to and go out in the car, you'll be safer. We are winning! By the way... He's 38 and she's 35. Both are Pink Floyd & Deep Purple fans. I wonder if there are any seats left for the Aug 23rd DP/ELP/DT show here in Minnesota. I think I know a little lady that may be interested in attending... But will she bring her old man with? Hehehe

Hello Jammers, Speaking about Alex Skolnick. Has anyone got Attention Deficit album? I've heard that it's very experimental and differs from what he has been doing in Testament and Savatage. Could someone post a review?
Take care, Volodya.

It was written about Testament --- Absolutely true. When Alex left before the "Low" album, the rest of the band decided to "return to their roots" and go back to the really heavy stuff. As a result, IMHO, they have put out the 2 worst albums of their career. There were only a handful of good songs off "Low", and if I recall, the only song I liked off "Demonic" was "Demonic Refusal". I think you will be very happy with both "The Ritual" and "Practice". In particular, "The Ritual" is still one of my all-time fave albums... even though the mix was lacking a bit. ---
Actually, I really liked Low. I think that even though Skolnick wasn't there the album still turned out decent. The changes they underwent really didn't bring them back to their roots. Their early stuff was heavy, but vocals on Low are much better. (This is in part because I like certain types of discernable death metal) Demonic is a bit lacking, but there are still some decent songs on there. (the other songs not being decent because every other song sounds a LOT like the song before it)
As far as "The Ritual" goes, I have to agree with you on that one...I absolutely LOVE that album, from the first time I heard Electric Crown I was hooked.

true, it canīt but counting that as 19/16 notes is just plain silly.Itīs much easier to think it as one bar of 4/4(or 16/16)and then a one bar 3/16 notes.Thatīs how I think any time sig that goes over 4/4(11/8, 9/8).Another example.9/8 notes is a bar of 4/4 and one 8th note.Itīs easier when youīre playing when donīt have to count 123456789.Itīs hard to do especially if itīs very uptempo(Like that one 9/8 part in Take The time)Itīs easier to count 1,2,3,4 and then One 8th note.

O.k. I don't wanna take up much bandwidth with this one, but it IS 100% legit, and is NOT a "Good times" hoax. There has recently been a serious discovery that MOST major Client side E-mail programs have a serious bug that is easily hackable, and allows a hacker to have full access to your computer, it's contents, AND FULL access to your E-mail and PPP stuff (mail, news, stuff like that). This IS NOT bullshit...it has been reported on the news, and Microsoft and Netscape officials are currently working on fixes for these problems. I don't remember the exact names of the E-mail programs with this bug, but I DO know that Netscape communicator (the E-mail part), Internet Exploder (Hate the Shit), and most other Microsoft E-mail programs have this bug...and I do remember them not mentioning Eudora. Anyways go do some research on this one if you are concerned...I saw the report on ABC nightly news I think...so they probably have something about it on their website...Netscape is supposedta have the fix out by next week. Anyways I know MANY of you have popular webpages with your E-mail address readily available to the people browsing the page...and this IS something you should look into. Once again I know for a FACT this isn't a scam...I'm ALWAYS synical about things like Virus and hacking problems...but this one IS real. Don't mean to scare you guys...just care...and anyone who flames me on this can Kiss my ass and hopefully they will get hacked too. (BTW I know a bunch of warez and hacker dudes who have verified this). Take care all! Oh yeah...Wooohoooooo Sunny Florida AGAIN!!! ok on Time enough there's an astonishingly fast guitar/synth harmony part, followed by yet another mind-blowing guitar solo. , on the liner notes it attributes the guitar/synth harmony to Murphy.. but on my mind it sounds like JP, is it a misprint, or is it murphy, i cant discern because ive never really listened to Murphy's work...

I know what you mean Mike. Reading Modern Drummer, all you see are ads and endorsements about and including Terry Bozzio. I never knew much about him, except he played for Missing Persons. Then I ordered BLS and was impressed with his playing, he does have a style all his own. It's hard to compare him to other drummers.
Then the day came when I saw a clinic he did here in Richmond, VA. The place they held the clinic in was a two story night club. Up stairs there is a balcony all around so you can look down. He set his drumset (huge) right in the center of the room. I watched him play his first two songs (I call them songs because the man makes music with his drumset) from upstairs. This man is definitely in a class by himself. He is amazing. Once he played two songs he told us about different time sigs, etc. much like Mike Portnoy does at his clinics. Then he played four more songs, by this time, I was down stairs about ten feet from him. The man can play anything. One of his songs was even a jazz number, another had amazing double bass patterns. Trust me, people who have been to his clinics or own his solo CDs already know he's the best. If you're a drummer, make sure to get his latest one, "Drawing the Circle".
Just my $2 worth.

Just to clear a Testament item or two up, and add my own little bit, being a long-time fan; Someone mentioned James Murphy not being in Testament anymore. Yes, he left, but the good news is, he's back, and will be on the new record, along with Dave Lombardo on drums (Dave is NOT a Testament member, just a full-time guest drummer on the CD - no touring)...... For me, Testament's best album is indeed 'Low'. And this is not to bad-mouth Alex, because fuck, man, Alex Skolnick is probably the guitarist, who, along with Nuno, had a really profound impact on me oh so many years ago, and I still hear a lot of the ideas that these two use(d) in my playing............ Anyway, to me, Low remains the quintessential Testament record so far, simply because it truly ROCKED (metalled?) in the way all their previous releases should have, yet still retained the MAJORITY of the melodic flair always atributed to Alex......... I believe this melodicism on 'Low' is attributab;e to James Murphy - a listen to his other work should confirm this, and it certainly shows in 'Demonic', which to me, is a weak album primarily because of the lack of lead guitar, and the lack of melody - this goes for the vocals, too. For me, the vocals on 'Low' struck the right balance Chuck always strived for but was denied............. The Ritual is a good CD, yes, but the 2nd half with the exception of the last two songs (both classics, IMHO), are all a bit too same-ey. 'Souls...........', to me, is probably the weakest album, with the exception of Alex's work, which I believe rated among his best for Testament.......... the song-writing is good in places, but the production is SHIT (again, IMHO), the guitar sound is rancid, and all together, that album never hung well with me. 'Practice..............' production is again, to me, a bit ordinary, mainly because: a) that bass sound! J. Myung's tone on WDADU RIPS compares to this one! b) it was recorded live in the studio, with the exception of a rhythm overdub on 'Envy Life' c) Alex Perialas, by this time, was out of production ideas, being the head Megaforce honcho, and thusly, the production is far too similar to the previous two releases.......... 'The New Order' probably comes in a close second for best Testament album for me; although, they could have cut a few of those clean, arpeggiated intros...... but all in all, an album I really like. 'The Legacy' (their first CD), is a CD that stands up well for a 1987 release but hell, now, it sounds very dated (more so than the others, anyway), and the production is none too grand (what do you expect for a debut CD?)............ it's a good CD, though, some good songs.........
As for 'Live at The Fillmore', it needs to have a better mix (where oh where is the rhythm guitar), but apart from that, it's not a bad CD. The 'Live at Eindhoven' EP is okay, the sound is alright, I guess......... don't listen to it much, I must say, and 'Return To The Apocalyptic City', an EP release, kicks some serious fuckin ass. GREAT live sound. THose four tracks remain my favourite impression of Testament................ Both Glen Alvelais and James Murphy kept the live guitar solos fairly strictly adhered to the original solos laid down by Alex, which I think Glen pulled off a lot better.........
I must add a small note; I received my Skol-Patrol CD a month or two ago, and on first listen I wasn't really impressed........... it has grown on me a bit, but there is NO memorable melodic material, and it's a REALLY flat CD, very dynamically sparse. there are some nice solos, but they almost seem a little obvious for me; Alex has lost some of his soloing unpredictability....... Oh, as for other Testament stuff, well, Greg Christian's now defunct band Flange were not too bad, the singer was mildly Layne Staley-esque, the music was quite heavy, but not in the thrash league at all............ James Murphy's solo album is pretty good, the vocal tracks are great..........
And as a parting note, just thought I'd add that I received a really old vinyl bootleg of Testament the other week, from when Steve Souza was in the band, and it features the band doing Jonny Be Good.......... now THAT'S some funny shit.
/me believes the new Testament album could be quite kick-ass......... 'Demonic' was a bit of a disappointment.............
Seeya!

This is the best comparison I've read in THREE YEARS. I totally agree with your reasoning. 'course, by the same reasoning, *I* like *kev* much better. My thinking is, I didn't become a DT fan because they were good live or because of their technical expertise(my friend did though). I became a DT fan because of good songs. That's kevin's dept. I see Derek as someone who can hold his own with what must be one of the toughest bands out there. but I don't take to much of his contribution. Kevin made good songs. Derek, not so much. Personally, I don't care for the jazzier sound he brings to the mix. Also, as good as his technical/mechanical expertise is, that means almost nothing to me. First of all, if you're not a technical expert, this is not the band for you, so that should go without saying. And secondly, all the technical expertise in the world and $.50 is worth a cup of coffee if you don't have the emotive skill. My aforementioned friend can play faster than JP - I've seen him. With just as much accuracy. Doesn't mean shit. he's never written a thing. You don't judge comedians by their diction, do you?
I love derek(not like that, pigs). He kicks major ass in a plethora of ways. But imho, there is no comparison between dt w/kev and dt/derek.

When DT came here in Brazil, she attended both concerts with me, and she enjoyed as much as I did! She even reads the YtseJam posts everyday ! Here's some news from the Spock's Beard mailing list... I thought some of you east coasters would be interested in what Neal has to say. :o)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone!
The good news is, yes, we're doing a show in S. F. on October 2nd. The bad news is I still haven't received a contract from the club, so, it's not booked yet. They were supposed to fax me last week but they haven't. That's why I haven't posted anything. We're also planning to do a show in L. A. October 4th but we haven't secured a club. I'll post it as soon as it's done. These things take forever!!!!
Look for Ryo and I in the current Keyboard magazine. I haven't seen it but I hear it exists. Pretty short article apparently.
The Kings X tour possibility is off! So, I'm working on a tour of the east and midwest cities for mid January. here's the cities I'm thinking of hitting: BOSTON, ROCHESTER, CLEVELAND, GRAND RAPIDS, CHICAGO, MINNEAPOLIS, ST. LOUIS, NASHVILLE, CINCINNATI, D. C. , PHILLY AND NEW YORK. Of course, this is just a preliminary routing idea, all is totally up for grabs, but, the reason I mention it is we are looking for venues in these cities appropriate to the beard. Capacity should be between 250 - 700 (I think!) and the stages need to fairly large. You guys could really help us out by emailing me the names of the venues, capacity, phone number and contact person. Thanks in advance!
THE LIGHT and BEWARE OF DARKNESS will be in the stores September 8.
Thanks for your continued enthusiasm. And remember SB CDs make great gifts!!!!

allow me to "bleep" a time or two......them dudes didn't play The Pass on either of these two tours, which means that very finest song they've ever made in my estimation will not be represented on a live album (an official one, anyway).....
about fave WDADU song.....OAMOT, without a doubt, it's fighting Learning to Live as my #1 fave DT song, for one thing......and the other reasons were rather well spelled out by Senor Merlo a jam or two ago....the imagery just kicks butt, what with the audience that ticks on the walls......the crescendo at the end, sweet stuff, say I....
fyi, Chris, I have done that "Wake up to OAMOT on repeat" before, more than once, and it's a great way to fire up for the day.....
(maybe the only better songs to start off the day with on repeat are the spirit of radio and APSOG.....of course, with the latter on repeat, you don't actually make it out of bed until about 1 PM, but that's another story)
