    Bill Bruford does this kind of over-the-bar playing all the time.
    Listening to the album version of Yes's "Heart of the Sunrise", after the
    frenetic intro, where it's only drums, bass, and atmospheric keyboards,
    and the bass plays the lead, he throws in all kinds over-the-bar
    flurries. That kind of stuff is also all over King Crimson, on albums
    such as "Red" and also their latest, "Thrak." Thrak is insane though,
    since there are sections where the six-piece band (including two drummers
    Bruford and Pat Mastelotto (sp?)) divide up into trios and play
    simultaneously in two very differing time signatures. Crazy stuff, highly
    recommended.

    First off, MAXIMUM SECURITY by Tony MacAlpine is incredible and still stands up to this day (Plus, Lynch and Watson are on it).
    Second, Music theory is cool and all, but, obviously, one doesn't really have to understand the technobabble about time signatures and odd meters to play it. Often times, bands improvise, and just happen to stumble upon odd meters through sheer accident, mixed with alot of creativity, mind you. It's like cooking: You really ought to know the basics to get into the advanced stages, but as long as you have some sort of talent as a chef, and you have that creative, experimental edge, you'll be cookin' in no time. To quote a great FUNK Band, THE TIME: In the skillet - Can you fill it?

    I have 4 tickets for the August 15th show in Detroit at the Pine Knob
    featuring Dream Theater , Deep Purple and ELP. Unfortunately I can't make
    this show but I am going to catch them the 19th in Toronto. If anyone is
    interested I would like some die hard DT fan to take them off my hands. I
    would just like to be reimbursed for my original cost of $30.00 each. The
    seats are row NN pavilion, including a parking pass.
    I saw Dream Theater on the Images and Words tour and they only proved to me
    that they are the premier musical band on the face of the earth. I am sure

    They don't break off, though. At least the black ones. The clear ones
    generally suck.

    There is one. Open your copy of Hooverphonic's "A new Stereophonic
    Sound Spectacular" or Machines of Loving Grace's "Gilt." Notice how
    the center of the jewel case is one solid piece? Those things are rock,
    the only way you're going to break the cd-holder is to hurl the whole
    thing at a wall.

    Now if only Magna Carta would learn about these, so my copy of LTE
    wouldn't bounce around inside the case--STILL a better situation than
    Tony Levin's releases, though.

    But, it still doesn't answer the question of why the things aren't ju=

    called cd cases. There aren't any funky names for vinyl or cassette
    cases. So why "jewel cases"? I believe to differentiate from the *oth=

    kinds of CD cases out there, such as the cardboard folder, the hinged
    cardboard thing with the plastic clasp, etc.

    Just curious: Is James Murphy the guy who used to be in Testament? (I'm pretty sure)

    On a related Testament note, I really like Alex Skolnick's playing on Savatage's "Handful of Rain", and I know he was with Testament for a while. Christian Kremo recommended "The Ritual" and "Practice What You Preach" to me as being good Skolnick discs. However, I'm a little curious as to what they sound like, in particular the VOCALS. I heard something recent by them (either off Demonic or Low, I can't remember) and it sounded like Slayer (uggggghhhh). My impression is that they've changed drastically though, is that true?

    On a related note (to the related note), when is Magna Carta' Attention Deficit (w/ Alex Skolnick) going to be out? This sounds pretty cool.

    On a related note (to the related note {to the related note}), will somebody (DETROIT JAMMERS, this means YOU!) please tell me what in God's name is going on here in Motown with "Age of Impact". It doesn't exist here in Detroit. Now please don't dismiss this as another "God'durn it! Nobody carries prog CD's!" gripe, like what many people had with LTE. This is a little different: I'm not having people say "no, we don't carry that" or anything like that. Instead they're telling me that they DID order it, but it didn't come in because the release date got pushed back! WTF! It's not like it's one dumbass who listens to Hanson saying it either. It's like a DOZEN places!

    On yet another related note (and a POSITIVE one, at that) when I went to Media Play today to see if they had AOI yet (which was a NO, of course) I saw Therion's "Vovin". Great stuff! Really amazing and eerie music. I like that this CD doesn't have the death metal growls of "Theli" (although I might be speaking too soon, since I haven't listened to all of Vovin yet). I do have a few Therion Q's for you folks. Media Play also has another CD called "Leppaca Kliffoth" or something like that (I forget). Is it any good, and what's it like? I'd like to learn a little more about this awesome group. Do they have a webpage?

    Bride of yet another (the last) related note: Media Play kinda kicks ass. I recently bought the two Therion CD's there. I also bought two Enchant CD's (and found several other Magna Carta discs, like "Working Man" and Tempest). They also have a really good general metal selection (for example, they had in stock every Savatage CD, all DT's stuff, lots of Testament and others).

    WHEW! I'm out of breath now.

    Last week I managed to get my hands on LTE.Which was difficult in the UK. Anyway I was reading the inner sleeve and read the bit about Mike Portnoy choosing a guitarist and thinking about using Dimebag Darrell. No don't get me wrong because I like Pantera, but could you imagine how different LTE would have been with DD instead of JP. For a start the songs would probably be heavier and not have as much jazz influence. Perhaps a country side to it (in the solos). Obviously the material doesn't depend entirely on the guitarist (even though us guitarists would like to think so) but the album would have been interesting.

    When I heard this live in SF, I was riding an emotional wave... While listening to it on the album allows you to get the nuances of the piece... hearing it live gives it more power and emotion... You've heard the song before... you know every articulation... so lets step up the intensity level. Same with a song like LtL! The emotion and intensity that you get from a live performance can't really compare to the studio version... but you DO get much more of the little things that make the song great in the studio version...

    Almost. 4/4 means there are four quater notes in a measure and the quarter note GETS THE BEAT. In other words, you would tap your foot on the quarter note pulse. 4 = Number of pulses - 4 = Pulse is quarter notes

    Is it that simple? Hell no. 4/4 is also refered to as common time - and by quinky dink, the common (popular) music usually is in 4/4. However, what about the OTHER time signatures.

    First thing to determine - is it SIMPLE time or COMPOUND time. Well, let us take the simple time signature 9/8. How do you feel this? The correct answer is HOWEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT TO.

    Classical music tends to feel it as COMPOUND time. Compound time is where the dotted quarter note gets the beat (not necessarily the quarter note but a dotted anything really). A dotted quarter note is equal to three eighth notes. So in a common classical beat you would feel 9/8 as: 1 and a 2 and a 3 and a - so there are only 3 pulses, however the note (numerator) says 9. So why only 3 pulses - because it is felt in compound time.

    So is this "compound time" the only way to feel 9/8? NO. Obvious example - Voices Intro. This is in 9/8. Is it felt in COMPOUND time? nope - SIMPLE time. This means the quarter note gets the beat (no dotted pulse). As Mike Portnoy would describe the beat "It's 4/4 with an extra eighth note tacked on". In other words: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5

    There are 5 pulses, but the last pulse is CUT IN HALF so to speak. Is this wrong? Well, do you like the feel of the voices intro?

    You could also feel it as the eighth note gets the beat and you have 9 pulses (although this would have a very hectic feel to it)

    Next - 7/8. You could feel it as simple time: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 In other words, 4/4 with the last eighth note cut off. Four pulses with the last pulse cut in half. You could feel it as compound time: 1 and a 2 and a 3 1 and a 2 and a 3 In other words, 6/8 with an extra eighth note tacked on for a total of 3 pulses, the last pulse 1/3 duration of the other 2. You could feel it as seven pulses: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (note: If you count it out this way, do your self a favor and turn the word seven into a one word syllable - "sev" so - one two three four five six sev. If you say seven, you are prone to feeling 7/8 as 8/8.)

    I would suggest listening to a lot of 4/4 music (in abundance of course) and noticing how other non 4/4 music is different. After awhile, you will get the idea. I could go on and on with a million different examples, but the point is that one time signature doesn't have just one feel. It is up to the composer. I would say that the DRUMMER usually has the most influence as to what time signature is taking place. Mike Portnoy makes this evident time and time again. (excuse me while I clean my brown nose now)
