I was reading this Belgian music magazine this morning, and they were reviewing
a load of instructional videos. This is what they had to say about
Petrucci's "Rock
Discipline":

On the subject of girlfriends who love/hate DT. My ex wasn't really all that
enthousiastic about DT, while the girlfriend I had before her really loved it.
The point? Even if she likes DT, it's not a guarantee for a lasting
relationship.
There are always other things to consider. Thank you, Dr. Ruth.
Also, I have a few weeks of vacation coming up, any recommendations in the
literature department? Serious and fun stuff, please.

I just received this CD from Music Boulevard for something like $20. This CD is awesome, reminds me of the first time I heard I&W. All those jammers who have bitched and moaned about wanting DT to do another I&W instead of their latest CD - FII, should pick up this CD. No, they don't sound exactly like DT, but you can hear the influences. But they definitely have their own sound. The singer has an amazing voice too. The drums are great, excellent double bass work.

Continuing the recent discussion about Derek and Kevin. Personally, I prefer both Matt Guillory and Jordan Rudess, to both of them.
Matt Guillory probably coming first, with Jordan Rudess a VERY close second, then Kevin, then Derek.
Matt Guillory's soloing and melodic ideas are just amazing, listen to his solo on Exposing The Nerve, including, and after the keys-guitar unison, on the old Chaos Theory wav (nerve2.wav) taken from the Chaos Theory demo, back when Jeff DiBartolemeo was vocalist. If anyone missed these old wavs when they were posted on Chaos Theory's old site, along with the RealAudio files, then I will be happy to host them at my web pages, just e-mail me. Also MG's harmonys and chordal ideas are amazing (Living In Fear intro). His patches are just amazing, especially his solo patches (I've heard he uses a guitar distortion pedal to smooth them out and thicken the sound. If Matt's reading, I never received the Chaos Theory demo you said you were going to send me (I don't mind if you weren't going to send it, I'm just wondering if you did, and it just got stuck in the post or something).
Jordan Rudess is just an all round amazing player and composer. Listen to Rudess Morgenstein Project. The piano solo in the middle of Crossing Over just knocks me over every time I hear it (and it was just as good live when I saw them supporting DT at the Forum in June). Rudess seems to use many patches, all of which sound very good.
Kevin Moore's solo and melodic ideas were very good sometimes (the Ytse Jam solo comes to mind). But sometimes they just seemed to wander (his solo in UAGM). His composition was good, although it's difficult to tell who writes what in the band sometimes. His patches were good.
Derek Sherinian's soloing just seems all the same sometimes, and lacks emotion too, most of the time, although some of his FII work was okay (TOT). Live he seems to spend more time trying to have sex with his keyboards than actually play them. Technically, he seems less adept than the previous players (who seem on a par with each other). His patches sound a little thin, and a little similar to each other.
Just my 2....um...English pence.

Allow me to explain bubbie! Jewish American Princess or "JAP" is a slang word most especially heard in New York or as D-Man knows it: Lawn Guy Land, OR in the Promised Land of Miami Beach (as in "Sadie dahling, when we retire, I promise we'll move to Miami Beach!")
A JAP is a single Jewish female that is used to wrapping Daddy (who is NOT known as the King in his house) around her adorable little finger and getting every little thing her heart desires. When the Princess finds her Prince and she receives an ample enough carat starter bauble for her finger she proceeds to marriage and becoming the Queen ( the REAL power in the Jewish house).
I know all this because I grew up in Miami and at one time was an Honorary JAP. I moved but still kept some of the finer qualities such as never shopping retail, and GUILT babay GUILT! OY! I'm getting verklemft! It was like buttah I tell you like buttah!
Also when the "Handbook" craze went on there was not only a Preppie Handbook, but a Jewish American Princess Hand book as well. One of my wonderful Jewish neighbors gave it to me so that I could truly be a MOT (Member of the Tribe) and find me a wonderful boy, settle down and make chicken and matzoh ball soup with gefilte fish. Guess that didn't work huh?
Hope that explains it a bit for you.....

Ok, I'm one of those with no musical background whatsoever. So why do I like DT? It's gotta be cause they're prog. When I was a kid, I rejected the usual radio station and the music because it bored me. I was the one listening to Ummagumma, or Shades of Deep Purple instead of the Zombies like my friends. I always liked the stuff that took some work to appreciate. My musical background stems from just appreciation. So still today, I go out of my way to find something I like, not what's being sold. Favorite WDADU song: LFAGA, of course.
Girlfriends into DT: Don't have one-wife wouldn't allow it :> She likes Acoustic Dreams. Also the ballads from FII. She doesn't really like heavy stuff at all and odd time sigs make her lose interest. Her background is country and pop 40. It's a wonder she listens to them at all...
AOI: Love it. Can't compare it to LTE, though as it's definitely a different concept. Wish I could here the rhythm section though... To me, I hear bad or improper micing of the drums. But that doesn't apply to Sheehan's bass. The whole lower end lack definition. Yeah, you can tell they're there but can't distinguish the notes (bass) or which individual drum Terry's hitting. And while I'm here, doesn't Impact 5 sound like it was faded out way early? I feel cheated so I don't like this ending especially when the thing is as insane as it is. It definitely isn't a time constraint, they have some 20 min. left on the CD. And James should've gotten Impact 1-my favorite track.
So is Magellan anything like AOI? I'm now interested and am thinking about Test of Wills. Any comments?

Do you have "A Change of Seasons" by DT? Then you've heard a Deep Purple song (Perfect Strangers). Have you ever heard the song "Smoke on the Water"? That's Deep Purple.
Deep Purple has been around a long time, and they've had many personnel changes. The most famous lineup of Deep Purple includes Richie Blackmore on guitar and Ian Gillian on vocals. They were contemporaries of Led Zeppelin, and there was a time (70's) when Jimmy Page and Blackmore were the biggest "guitar gods" in hard rock.
If you want to purchase any Deep Purple, get "Machine Head" first. That's the "Images and Words" recording for Deep Purple (The best studio recording). Or you can get "Made in Japan", which is a live album with the same line-up.
After many line-up changes and breaking up, the "Machine Head" line-up got together years later and recorded "Perfect Strangers". It's another good one to get. (On a side note, when Deep Purple broke up the first time, they had fizzled out, but the band stayed together under a new name with the last DP singer, David Coverdale. They became Whitesnake, but that's a different story... And of course Blackmore had formed Rainbow, with some unknown singer named Ronnie James Dio.)
Anyways, you'll find a lot of discs out there for Deep Purple, but be careful. They did more live and greatest hits albums then studio albums. No telling what you'll get.
Should you see them now? Well, many people will say that Blackmore IS Deep Purple, so without him, it's a different band. They'll probably play some of the old classics, but it won't be the same. I have no idea what their new material is like, but it hasn't received any glowing reviews. But if you're a big fan of Steve Morse, it may be worth it.

In AOI, there was this survey thing where they ask questions about what you listen to. There are two places where you, the fans, can promote LEMUR VOICE to them. One is where they ask your 3 favorite bands. I put them in as #3. The other is what 3 CD's you've recently purchased-they fit there, too. This is your chance to promote them and let MC know they do have a fan base. Of course, it would help if MC did something (anything) to promote their bands....

Sorry. The tab book is wrong. The last bar is definitely 15/16. It is in simple time not compound time. also the (1 bar of 2/4 and 1 bar of 9/16) is wrong. It should be one bar of 17/16. Why break it into two bars? makes no sense. All it that is happening is Mike Portnoy is adding a 16th to 4/4 - 17/16. The tab book makes the whole feel very hard to read. It is mathematically correct - but is a bad choice of time sigs. I compare this to a tab book transcribing the right notes - but then putting them on the wrong fret/string. In other words, close but no cigar.

I can't say if it's like AOI, since I haven't got that one yet, but I can say this about ToW: BUY IT! NOW! This album kicks major butt! I listened to parts of the first two songs in the store before buying it, and I was hooked, man. It sounds like an "old-genesis-meets-yes-and-jethro tull" kinda thing. Some really heavy parts too. The first song actually reminds me of ZZ Top. Get it! You won't regret it!

This explains why I like KevMo's style more than Derek's, me being an emotional perfectionist 'n' all. But hey, as long as it fits in the whole concept of the band, then what the hell?
