    Hey all,
I forgot to mention before, but someone got the ten points for naming
Jackie Brown and Out of Sight as the two outstanding Elmore Leonard movies
this year. I highly recommend his writings. I'm on my fifth book of his in
    two weeks.
            On album production:
    >Honerable mentions: KC - Thrak, Tool - Aenima, DMB -Crash,
    >Rush - Couterparts, and some others....

I agree wholeheartedly with Aenima. Odd that the production is so
remarkable since it is such a dissonant album. As for Crash, I was a Steve
Lillywhite fan from when he was working with David Byrne. I loved Crash,
but the new DMB is too much. The layering and over-instrumentation is
pretty annoying. Also, I disagree on Counterparts. Too often, Alex gets
lost in the shuffle (like any recent Rush album). My favorite production
jobs? Glad you asked! This doesn't include any jazz...

    1. Joe Satriani - eponymous
    2. David Byrne - Rei Momo
    3. Megadeth - Youthanasia
    4. Queensryche - Promised Land
    5. Chris Isaak - Forever Blue
    6. Yes - Talk
    7. Collective Soul - eponymous
    8. Cheap Trick - Lap of Luxury
    9. Peter Gabriel - Us
    10. Enya - Shepherd Moons

This is an off-hand recollection of memorable music production; I didn't
plan it to be a ten-best list. In many cases (Satch, Byrne), each
instrument is so crisp and recognizable that you can concentrate on
different instruments with each listen. In some cases (Yes and Cheap Trick
especially), it is the result of a band and producer sounding like they
clicked so incredibly all at one time. Granted, with Yes, the producer was
IN the band. And with "Us" and "Promised Land", the mix is so subtle and
involving that you become consumed by the music.
My honorable mention would be Extreme's Punchline. And Weird Al's In
    3-D... Heheh...

    Greetings Fellow Ystejammers!!!
I'm finally back from my vacation! I left for 3 straight weeks to goof off
out in South Padre Island, not a very productive period of time except in
that I've got new CD's which I will review right now: (prices don't include
    shipping and handling or taxes)

-THE (in)famous Liquid Tension Experiment: It's finally mine! I must point
out that no one in this list has been able to fully exemplify the tremendous
excellence of this piece of work. I found it too amazing to describe, the
music is just unreal. For this, obviously the musicians deserve more than
    just a fair review.
I give this cd a perfect 10/10. This was bought in cd now for $11.49,
    service was fast.
My picks (in order): Universal Mind, Paradigm Shift, Three Minute Warning.

-Superior, Behind: Also one of the cd's I had been wanting for a loooong
time, what tipped me off was Pellaz's opinion on this cd, cuz I figured 'if
his favorite cd is I&W, and he LOVED Behind, I oughta check it out too' and
after HARD work in finding a few samples I decided to go for it, only to be
astonished as how much good music can fit in a single cd...
This cd gets a deserved 10/10. It was bought in knightsoftheround.com for
$13.99, service was great (but my jewel case arrived smashed in the mail,
    though) Thanx, Bernd.
My picks: Tainted Silence, Why, Dreamtime.

-Dave Matthews Band, Before These Crowded Streets: Some very intelligent
person recommended this band a few dispatches ago, and I think I will second
him... I had already heard about 'THE good musicians from MTV' because their
last record was excellent. For this you will not be disappointed, this is
an amazing cd musically, the guys can *play*, (violins, sax, guitar, nice
percussions), its not exactly prog but more like rock, jazz... It really
kicks ass, you should get this if you like even a little bit what you may
have heard of them on the radio; I was very pleased of how this cd turned
    out.
I give it a 9/10 (and just because I only give 10's to the best of the
best). Bought manually in Target for 13.99.
    My picks: Rapunzel, Spoon, Crush.

-Devil Doll, Dies Irae: This has got to be one of the strangest kinds of
music I have heard in my life, its something like symphonic orchestra and
opera meets progressive avant garde classical (or something). It's really
    intense work, it includes
very complex lyrics and arrangements. But don't get me wrong, this cd is a
dick... If I can I'll leave a few mp3 in mosh's for you to sample this
    exquisite music.
10/10 (What did I tell you?). I found this at cranium records
    (www.cranium.co.nz) for $17.00.
My picks: (This is one continuous 45 min symphony split into 16 tracks).

-Van Halen, III: Ok, this isn't prog (you'll say) but I still will mention
it because I bought it and it deserves to be mentioned (as a warning maybe)
because I happened to think this cd is one of the most mediocre VH has ever
done... I really dig Gary's singing (specially back from Extreme) and
Eddie's playing, however, I wouldn't really recommend this cd at all, some
    of the songs simply suck.
5/10. I bought this in Target for 14.99 (Damn!)
    My pick: Without you.

-Deep Purple, Abandon: A few months back I had the pleasure to assist to one
of the concerts these guys were giving when they landed on Monterrey (only
problem: no DT :( damn) I found out they had excellent to perfect music for
I hadn't really listened to many of their songs... You could have thought
their music was DT's (only not), they're a clear influence to our guys.
Steve plays the guitar *just like* Petrucci and John's keyboards are what
makes a difference between long songs and prog. Great job, this cd is a
    must-have.
I give it a 9/10. This was bought in cdnow for $13.42.
    My picks: Any!

I guess that's it, the rest are regular so just keep on posting...
    Salutes,

    Thought about during a short jaunt into hell (Wal-Mart) . . .

My favorite WDADU song . . . Ystejam and Status Seeker

Ytsejam because it's a hella intense insturmental with so much feeling.

Status Seeker because it strikes a chord within me. I'm not really sure why, but it always does. And the lines "Are you sanctified in your judgement of me? All that I deserve is what you aren't able to see." affect me deepest. There are so many people who I'd love to play this song for I'd be dead before I hit the bottom of the list.

    That's my $.02 worth.

Let's make this clear... Shirley is a good producer when it comes to in- the-mix... but I think the choice of him suggesting to the band to put the buttered-sting-wanna be version of TAMP on the album sucks.. You may think it's a nice, fluffy song, but it isn't, it's contrived and more cliche than calling the demo a cliche'd power ballad, I'll take the metal over the fluff, thank you...

    um, I fail to see the difference between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 AND 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1

except that the one with the 5 in it doesn't have TWO "one" counts. I prefer to count it with a 5 because when you say "1" you are starting a NEW measure. Either way, both still infer 9/8.

My Wife devotes entire weekends to listening to DT. When I first introduced I&W to her, she was a little confused by the music. As far as the vocals go... she was already a Queensryche fan, so the vocals were a pleasure. After a month, she was hooked. When Awake came out, I had to fight to get the CD out of the house, all I wanted to do is go play it in the car. Awake is her all time favorite. She will be attending her 3rd DT concert on Aug 23rd. (and she bought the tix) Now here is the weird part... She's 37! She is the assistant director of the dietary dept. at St. Paul's largest hospital & level 1 trauma center. Plus, she teaches Sunday school at a Lutheran church! Not your typical DT fan, huh?

    I've got one!

...quite often MP (as demonstrated in his most recent intervew in Moderm Drummer) breaks up a line of 4/4 into a smaller segments (eg. 3/8, 2/8, 3/8). Since 4/4 is the same as 8/8 or 16/16, then 3/8 + 2/8 + 3/8 = 8/8 = 4/4. A simple yet extremely cool 'trick' which makes for some cool fills.

Add Virgil Donati to that group. I just witnessed his incredible, unhindered talents at one of his clinics today - he's a fucken monster. I believed that he was playing in the Australia DT cover band, Theater Of Dreams, when MP was down here to do his drum clinics (and even MP commented on how awesome Virgil was) - so believe the hype cause he *is* that good.

Unfortunately most of the 'well known' bands (Southern Sons and now Tina Arena) he has toured with haven't really allowed much 'creative freedom' for him to really unleash his potential. I suppose that's why they have clinics....

Well.. I'm not sure what you mean with no musical background. I've never studied any music, but I jsut pick around on the guitar every once in a blue moon (That is, since 2 months ago) I spent hours and hours trying to figure out the intro for ACOS; before I realized the damn thing is played on a 7 string.

I've played keyboards since '91, but I still suck, and I can't play anything that is not sheet music (Hell.. I can't even play that!)

And I've been playing drums for a while. I'm proud to say that I can play 3/4 and 4/4. But except from that.. NO FRIGGIN' WAY!!

So what do I like about DT? The same thing that makes me like icecream and sex. IT MAKES YOU FEEL SO GOOD when you listen to it (well.. I do'nt listen to sex or icecream, but you get my point)

Same here. Yeah, typical bass-players can tap and do solo's and shit, right!

Mary Jane has nothing to do with this. So what if the guy's a dope head. Besides, if it's really the MJ thing you're worried about, get KJLB to go into drug-rehab, start a petition or something, otherwise shut the fuck up!

I grew up listening to YES, on headphones, with out no outside interference. Can you say "focused?" I knew you could. YES taught me to look at music in a different light, and to examine it much deeper than the average bear.
