<< Yup! Jon Finn is one of the best "unknown" guitar players out there.
He's a teacher @ Berklee College of Music, and he actually tought JP.
     He' just AMAZING!!! >>

In reality, JP did not study with Jon Finn. I asked Jon about this when I
studied with with back in '93- Jon became QUITE exasperated at this FAQ from
his own fiery, personal hell and beat me to a pulp. ;) He said that when
Petrucci went to Berklee back in '86, he studied with a guitar professor named
Larry Senibaldi- known to Berklee guitar guys as the old guy with the
Steinberger. He rips hard, btw. Jon, incidentally, continues to rip the
heads off of those who continue this Petrucci rumor... Joe Stump started
teaching there during my last semester too....<holding back imminent shred-
    attack...> Oww...where's my gel-coated ibu's...

<< His music is very prog/metal like... You'll love it, believe me. >>

I find the music of the Jon Finn Group to be quite prog but NOT metal like at
ALL, in all honesty. I've seen them play quite a few times at Boston area
clubs over the better part of a year- from mid-'93 to late '94. I would
describe their music as a SUPER technical instrumental rock power trio- quite
similar upon first listening to the Dixie Dregs minus violin and the Steve
Morse Band. VERY challenging, cool stuff that grows on you immediately. Dave
DiCenso and Joe Santerre both teach at Berklee and are two of THE best
drummers and bass players anywhere. Plus, Jon is MONSTROUS on the guitar-
it's no wonder that he's the most sought-after guitar instructor at Berklee.
Great stuff- Don't Look So Serious was a great cd of theirs that I had but
LOST a number of years ago....great....now I'm pissed about it again...

Yeah, I suppose you like everything by Sting too... He's not cliche... maybe
DT should really do a Puff Daddy remix, you might like it...

About as interesting as paper bags. He took away all the passion, made it
adult contemporary... if you call that shit interesting, maybe you should
    try some Kenny G.

    AoI thoughts...

Trent Gardner always gives me the impression of someone who want more than anything else in the world to write an 'epic' piece of music and is just short of having what it takes to pull it off.

There's something to be said for the subtlety of your message, and I don't find that to be the case with either Magellan or AoI. Lyrically, it's just too straightforward, kind of like you're being beat over the head. Think about some DT 'epics', like 'Lines in the Sand', 'Learning to Live', 'Scarred', etc. Those songs are much more open to interpretation, not so direct. Maybe that's just a personal preference.

Yes, the production sucks. Magna Carta does not do itself any favors by releasing poorly recorded stuff. Then again, they are more familiar with all the trade-offs than I am (higher production costs vs. sales figures, etc.)

Man, part one is just a sonic barrage. That one will take a while.

Petrucci is the man, as usual. Question: what is to keep East/West from saying, 'Hey, bud. All these side projects are nice, but how about saving some ideas for us?" What's the deal with that. Seriously, the man is had more exposure lately than a flasher in Time Square.

Why does nobody ever mention part four? Probably because Petrucci is largely missing from it, but I like it. Seriously, James Murphy's halftime solo blazes over the rest of the band's slower tempo, and I really like Gardner's trombone solo as it blends into Sheehan's bass solo as this goes into the nylon string guitar thing. I really think these are the best transitions on the whole album.

For all the slagging I do of LaBrie, he's really good on this.

Bozzio - is he great? Yes. The best? Better than anyone else? (Portnoy, etc.) How can you honestly say that? Bozzio is one of those guys whose reputation has just kind of run wild and I can never figure out why. I think if he died tomorrow, it would be a Hendrix thing. People would wander around saying, 'Bozzio was the greatest - EVER' and everyone who played drums forever after would only be doing so in his long shadow.

    > HK: The best DT instrumental so far, IMHO. I was never a fan of Ytsejam >(the song) and Erotomania grew tedious after a while, but I still really >love this song, especially the synchronized runs at the end.

I never cared all that much for Ytsejam either. Hell's Kitchen, however, emotionally hits you like a punch to the solar plexus. Ytsejam? Not even close.

    >Yeah, sure he did... but it was a prog project to start with... I don't >think he really did much "producing" on LTE. Like slaughtering songs >that were perfectly good to begin with on FII

Mosh, give it a rest. Don't listen to demos, they're bad for your health! You know, if you'd never heard a demo of the song (and I haven't on purpose), you'd think the one on the album is a pretty damn good song.

Note: this post was sent because I'm very bored and have nothing better to do. If you do not wish to read my lyrical bullshit, please scroll past this message.

I'm working as a English-Hebrew translator. My current task is an Ericsson phone. Now, on this phone you can compose short melodies that replace your phone's ring.

Now, I though: wouldn't it be kinda cool to have a DT ringing melody (say, ytsejam) in your car phone?

Because I have neither (car or car phone), I can't do much, but this IS a rather nice idea, isn't it?

Personally, I loved FII when it came out. I liked the heaviness of some of the songs, and the catchy guitar riff of You Not Me. I usually have to be in a certain mood to listen to TAMP or AL (just like TSM on Awake). I thought the album thoroughly kicked ass, and listened to it all the time. I think Shirley did a great mixing job, as well as in LTE. He seems to have a good relationship with the band. Whatever makes DT happy, I'm all for. I appreciate the diversity of each album. If I want to listen to DT with more crunch, I usually listen to Awake. If I want to hear the more technical DT, I listen to WDADU or I&W. FII is a little more mainstream-sounding, but it still has the prog element. Also, many songs off of FII actually gave me goosebumps (like Hell's Kitchen and Trial of Tears). I also like the demos as well. I've been listening to Symphony X: Divine Wings of Tragedy and Twilight in the Olympus, and I must say they kick ass! I usually listen to an album until I know what song I'm hearing anytime, so they're still getting alot of playing time. Great vocals, and guitars, and I love the keyboards in them. I don't much care for the opera-style vocal parts, though. Also, I've been listening to Explorer's Club:AOI and I think it's a great prog album. I agree with the lack of audible drums. Some of the songs sound alot like the others due to the repeating of guitar riffs and lyrics, but I still like them. It's more prog-rock than prog-metal, but I actually like it. I also recently have my prog stuff segmented from my metal and other stuff. I listen to it far more these days, so I thought it would be easier to access. BTW, I picked up the new Fear Factory:Obsolete album when I got EC. It's not bad, but it's a little less harmonic than the last, I think. It sounds almost a little too Pantera-ish. I almost never listen to Pantera because I usually have to be pissed to listen to it.

Hello, I for one believe this guy did a great job. His work makes the album distinctive and not just another cookie-cutter prog album. I don't care for the production on Awake; its a bit too bombastic for me. And I&W has the dubious honor of contain the worst drum sound in DT history thanks to those triggers. ACOS is great, though the snare sound gets to me. But FiI is dead on. There are no songs where you wonder "where is the bass?" or "is Derek even playing?" Every song has a fairly proportional mix, depending on the roles of the instrument. But then again, I think the best produced Satch album is the self-titled one, and I get routinely slammed for that belief.
