Hmmmm... Well, unless there was a HUGE musical change between Impending Ascension and Test of Wills, then I would say AOI is alot different than Magellan. In the liner of AOI Trent even says AOI is more laid back stating something like, "I didn't put every musical idea i had into one song this time." I thought Impending Ascension sounded exactly like that: too cluttered. There was too much involved in the songs all at once that led to a sort of cacophony quite a bit. While alot of people like that, I thought otherwise. Good musicianship, though. I just couldn't get into it. Probably something for older prog fans (early Yes type stuff).
And why don't you have AOI yet? :) Get it, NOW! Best album of the year so far, IMO. --KorgX3

I recently downloaded the TS Remix from the NMS homepage. I am in no way a supporter of those such as Puff Daddy, but I can honestly say that this remix was actually well done.
Although it's got those rap influences in it, the integrity of Tom Sawyer is actually still present. In a big way I might add.
For all purposes, it's worth a download. Check it out.

I suppose this is a rather sacrilegious question to ask, but for those of you who have already attended the DT/DP/ELP shows, did you get to see enough Dream Theater for your satisfaction? I finally got around to perusing the tour dates and getting ticket information and realized that $40 a piece is rather steep (not to mention the drive to S.F.) just to see DT. I'm just not as into DP and ELP as I am DT...

Can't help you here. My gf hates DT, well hates the singer. Won't listen to most prog because she hates the singer. hell, she likes Korn and Nirvana, so what can I do, but then she confuses me by liking peter Gabriel, but not liking Led Zeplin, well at least at first. Likes Van halen, and even liked Ytsejam. When I was listening to some of the christmas cd, the making of FII, she seemed to like some of You not me, based on the little bits of it. She said she wanted to relisten to The Lamb lies down on Broadway, since a friend of hers told her what an awesome CD it is, even though the first time she heard it she hated it. Hates Yes, but seems to like Seen all good people. Hates Rush, except the newer stuff and Tom sawyer, hates ELP, and journey. Loves Pink Floyd though. Confused yet? I don't know what to do here. She loves Billy Joel, and so do I, loves some Elton John, Not the cheesey stuff he does now, but the older stuff, and after that, she is an alternative lover, but then she makes fun of the wallflowers. I can't figure her out. When she was at the trade winds show with me, she liked watching Mike P. That was what made the concert bearable. She loved the napolm death and dt version of metalica's damage inc from the first xmas cd. I don't know. I wish she would just make up her mind. Maybe i am actually getting through somewhere. if only I knew what to do next.

You knew this resonse was coming from me, didn't you? I mean, hell, when it comes to keyboards, Damon has to respond. It is like Mosh not taking a moment to trash Kevin Shirley for destryoing tamp. It hast o be done. So, on with the opinions. I have never heard that Matt Guillery guy that was referred to, but I can comment on Derek, Kevin, and Jordan, and i will throw a few more into the mix. Let's start with the miscelaneous. Tony Banks of Genesis. In the 70s, he was great, although he really never improvised. He is admittedly not that great of an improviser. He says so himself in many an article. But the solos he writes are great and very difficult to understand. I happen to like technical keyboard wizardry, so this guy rocks. I love how he can hold down organ chords with one hand while soloing like a maniac with the other. Keith Emerson could do this as well. I only wish Tony banks didn't wuss out in the 80s and 90s. He got better keyboards and just became a chord maestro after that. What a shame. And his attempts at keyboard solos on recent Genesis albums are lame. And the lead sounds he uses suck. He could get bnetter sounds from those keyboards. Now, onto Rick Wakeman. Kick ass. Yeah, I have been told he doesn't write much, just keyboard parts to Yes songs, but he had some nice solos, and if you ever heard his solo on the Evening of Yes music plus album, you should know that there are no feet involved and the really fast part is done with one hand. This is what I was told. Beat that. Derek or kevin would have a difficult time with that solo. However, Derek did do the Rick wakeman solo from YesSongs justice on the christmas 2 CD. But, the king of all keysmen, in my mind, is Keith Emerson. He is unstoppable. His sounds are awesome, yeah the last two studio albums weren't top notch, but he always gets great sounds, the kind of sounds all prog keysmen try to immitate. And he is a classic showman. He beats up on the organ like no other person will do. If I had his riches, I would trash my equipment, too. Anyway, Jordan Rudess, awesome keysman as well. Keith Emerson contemporary, maybe? He is just as good, but I don't like some of his sounds. I think he could use a Trinity or a Yamaha ex5 along with his k2500. But, that is my taste. His electric guitar simulations are ok, though. His piano playing is first rate, and some of the bass sounds on the Rudess morganstein album are sweet. Now, onto derek. Derek has the best guitar sounds and organ sounds I have ever heard from a keyboard. I love derek's programming choices. i wish I could have a Trinity just to mimic his sound. I thought that about Kevin when i first heard DT, but the jd800/Korg dw8000 thing just doesn't work for me, although I would love a sample of Kevmo's lead sound. His piano sound was nice, too. But Derek, wins in the sonic department. As for who is better, I like them both differently. It really just depends on how I feel. Especially since I had the opportunity to listen to Derek's interpretations of Kevmo's parts. I really don't think they can be compared. I like how Derek is all flash in his solos, and wish sometimes Kevmo would rip it out of the wall like he did on ytsejam. But, hell, as I have stated, I love technical flash and speed. maybe that is why I think Keith Emerson is god. Oh, wait, we can't refer to mortals musicians as gods, sorry. he is #1, then. I missed Kev when he left, or when I found out he left, since I became a fan in 1995 after he was already gone, but after hearing a lot of Derek, I think he was a great replacement. Although, I would love to hear tapes of the one show Jordan Rudess did with DT. Must've been orgasmic.

Give him some time. Remember, he's spent a lot of time being a side man to mostly guitar-heavy bands. Once he feels comfortable in a more dominant position, I'm sure he'll surprise us all. Who's to say he hasn't already? Nobody but the band and Kevin Shirley really know how much each member contributed to each song. Something tells me we haven't seen everything DS can do.
Personally, I don't care for the jazzier sound he brings to the mix.
I hear more blues than jazz, but I like what I'm hearing. It injects an element of fun and looseness in both the music and live show (especially).
And secondly, all the technical expertise in the world and $.50 is worth a cup of coffee if you don't have the emotive skill.
Agreed. But there is just as much "keyboard emotion" in Anna Lee as there is in WFS, IMHO.

Maybe taking so long to do a project is not good thing.
AOI is musically satisfying, but not as much as LTE. LTE has a nice raw and unpolished quality in places. And this is a good thing, 8 days doesn't leave a lot of time to go back a make a lot of fixes. It's not perfect that is was makes LTE so great.
AOI on the other hand, sound like someone had a little too much time to think things through. Like I said if it were for the musicianship and the cast of charcaters, I'd probably be putting AOI on a shelf and not listeing to it a whole lot.
Maybe the reason AOI took so much longer was the fact that it actually had lyrics but who knows.
Just some random thought and a couple pennies.

This shouldn't be such alarming news. If I'm thinking of the same news reports you're talking about, the "bugs" referred to here are buffer overflow exploits. These type of exploits are fairly common in software, and have been one of the most common exploits used by crackers for a long time, as they're pretty easy to take advantage of. Of course, if you were using a real OS, where typical applications aren't allowed full reign over your entire computer, this wouldn't be such a big deal.
> most other Microsoft E-mail programs have this bug...and I do remember
I'm sure most Microsoft programs PERIOD have this problem. > This is the best comparison I've read in THREE YEARS. I totally agree > with your reasoning. 'course, by the same reasoning, *I* like *kev* much > better. My thinking is, I didn't become a DT fan because they were good
I agree, I like that comparison. The two biggest reasons I prefer Kev over Derek are that (a) I think Kev wrote much better melodies than Derek and was a much better songwriter, and (b) Derek (at least with his stuff with DT - I haven't heard AOI yet) doesn't seem to write stuff that compliments the playing of the rest of the band. One thing that stands out as an example of this is that a week or two ago someone commented about how much Derek's solo in BMS sounded like JP. I really don't see what the point is of using guitar sounds and trying to play keyboard solos to sound as much as possible like guitar solos. Last I checked, guitar solos were JP's job. I like Derek's solos and the jazz influence he adds, but songs like LTL are why I love DT and got into them in the first place, and I think it's Kev more than anything that makes LTL such a great song.
Deep DT thought:
If I were JP I'd be pretty pissed about that... I'd be like "Hey Derek dude, I just wanted to ask you, IS THAT IN YOUR F&*@#&$ING JOB DESCRIPTION? HUH?????", and then I'd kick his ass 'cause he's a homo.
> I love derek(not like that, pigs). He kicks major ass in a plethora of > ways. But imho, there is no comparison between dt w/kev and dt/derek.
Totally agreed. To me, WDADU-I&W era Kevin was the quintissential (or whatever the that friggin word is) prog keyboardist.
> About the topic - Girls & DT, I can say that my girlfriend is a DT freak
Whew! All I saw was the "S" in "Subject" and then "Girls & DT" and I almost thought it said "Spice Girls & DT". But seriously, I think DT should get rid of this LaBrie punk and replace him with the Spice Girls. Then DT would rule - and just think of all the records they'd sell! Not to mention that the problem with the lack of female DT fans would be taken care of.
