That's true: But correct me if I'm wrong - Derek didn't write any of

It was written when KevMo was still around, I think.

Don't get me wrong though........ I have a feeling Derek is really gonna
surprise alot of people when the next studio album comes out!

has anyone ever noticed the beginning of scarred? it starts with a VERY king

     Hello there.
I was just wondering if any of you guys know bands that resemble the
shreddier side of Dream Theater. Surprisingly I think Images & Words is
their best album and I have Liquid Tension Experiment which is also
great. Rush etc. are ok but what I'm looking is something prog with more
speed and technical virtuosity; a real show-off of players' abilities.
I've got cds from artists like Macalpine, Moore, Malmsteen, Racer X and
Friedman among others but as you know they all lack the proggish side.
Come to think of it, an album a'la Paradigm Shift a'la Liquid Tension
    cuold come pretty close.
Is there such a band? Please let me (and others) know if you have
something I described in mind. All suggestions welcome.

well, it's not really devil music. they've always had that goat logo
(since one of their early albums).

the name of the album is "demonic" but the name of the song is "demonic
refusal." the lyrics for the whole rest of the album are quite good,
actually. not satanic at all. just kick-ass metal. i think they might
have tried to gain more of the heavy-as-fuck/satanic-listeners with their
latest, which is why is might have "seemed" to be more of a "devil music"
thing... maybe it's just a bandwagon...

Well i dont know if youve heard the old version, which basically the whole
section after labrie sings "now its time for them, to deal with me" is
totally different with a neo classic(?) feel. Neither the slow/building
guitar solo w/ the keyboard solo in that section are the same..so i think
derek did write the solo for that section.. same with the organ solo in the
    middle of the song...

I just noticed something weird. I have a DT FII hat I bought in
Minneapolis on Nov. 2-97. JP and MP signed this hat on Nov. 18-97
in Madison WI. KJLB and JM signed this hat on May 13-98 in Chicago.
Here's the weird part.... KJLB signed it "Kevin Labrie!" Does any one
else have a sig like that? I just noticed this tonight. I wonder if this had anything
to do with me calling him Kevin, or a slip-up on his part. WTF?

Now if I can just pull Derek away from the chicks long enough to get a sig.

    KevMo vs. Derek:
Shut the fuck up! Both KM & DS are great players, period.
My favorite KM song is Scarred. My favorite DS song... hmmm.
I'm a little divided between ACOS & TOT, both are great.
    Live, Derek is the shit!

If the members of Dream Theater were a drug... (past and present)

    John Myung = Marijuana
    John Petrucci = LSD
    James Labrie = Morphine
    Mike Portnoy = Meth-amphetamine
    Derek Sherinian = Cocaine
    Kevin Moore = Quaaludes
    Charlie Dominici = Nasal Decongestant

The early 70's were good to me... I think. The only problem is...
What the FUCK happened to 1975? I have no evidence this year
ever took place. Wait! (flashback) YES "Relayer" tour.. St. Paul Civic
Center.. Uh, lights and stuff. Alice Cooper "Welcome To My Nightmare"
Tour.. same place. I think there's more. "Hey Mickey!"

"One thing that stands out as an example of this is that a week or two ago someone commented about how much Derek's solo in BMS sounded like JP. I really don't see what the point is of using guitar sounds and trying to play keyboard solos to sound as much as possible like guitar solos. Last I checked, guitar solos were JP's job."

I think this gives DT a two guitar sound, and helps to expand their musical potential. I have always wondered what DT would sound like if they would add a second guitarist to the line up, and this gives some indication (I'd love to see Alex Skolnick do a guest piece with DT!). I also use this as a way to show off DT talent to those who are unfortunatly ignorant of how truely great DT is. If the keyboardist can make his instrument sound so convincingly as a guitar, and he's the newest member, just how good are the rest of the group?

This was my 8th DT show, and without question, it was the best they have ever sounded, by a WIDE margin. It was probably a combination of the venue itself and the boys in DT having had some time off, but it was just incredible. Really good "vibe". My only "complaint" was that they didn't change the setlist much from the last leg of the tour. I had been hoping for some "special song appearances". But that's a pointless quibble after such a killer show.

    A couple of other notes/points:

1)Jon Finn was really good too, but from the back, he looked like Cameron from "Ferris Beuller's Day Off". Not exactly what I was expecting, visually. :)

2)Anyone else think that Portnoy bears a striking resemblance to Charlie Benante with his new, super-short 'do?

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Hey jammers, I need some serious input here! A friend at work is leaving to return home, and she won't be returning any time soon. I like her *very* much, and would like to give her something that she will remember me by. I'm always giving music as gifts, and this time won't be any acception. I have chosen to give her two cassettes made up of DT's music, but I can't deside what songs to put on them. I'll have 220 minutes to work with, so song length isn't a real problem. I want to give her DT's best, to make the memory of our friendship that much greater. There are a few songs I have in mind (such as ACOS {this song is very close to why she is leaving}, LTL, LITS, TLF, and Metro 1 {my personal fav!}), but this won't be enough. What do you all recommend? Also, I only have until Aug. 20, so I need this in a hurry!

PS: Mr Portnoy, if you're reading this, your suggestions would be *greatly* valued and well recieved!

    Is there anybody out there?

Just thought I would drop another line to see if anyone is interested in the DT tickets for the August 15th show at the Pine Knob in Detroit.

Unfortunately I can't make this show but I am going to catch them the 19th in Toronto. If anyone is interested I would like some die hard DT fan to take them off my hands. I would just like to be reimbursed for my original cost of $30.00 each. The seats are row NN pavilion, including a parking pass.

So what? So DT already has the (arguably by some, I guess) most incredible prog metal guitarist of all time in their band. They don't need a keyboard sounding like a guitar. JP can handle that very well by himself.

    >overuse. But for a solo, that shouldn't be anissue. that is like yelling >at somebody for using a flute sound. Give me a break. If JP didn't like

No it isn't. Last time I checked, DT didn't have a flute player in the band. I don't care if he's gonna use a "keyboard" sound, or a flute sound, or a strings sound, or whatever.. DT doesn't have a flute or violin player. That's what's cool about keys.. but with JP in the band, there's NO need to use the guitar sound; once in a while could be cool, a la JLMB, but using it much more than that is too much.

    >it, then I would be very disappointed. That borders on insecurity. I think >it adds a dual guitars thing that was missing before. Hell, it makes songs >sound more ballsy.y

You want ballsy keys? Listen to The Mirror\Lie, Puppies on Acid, A Crack in the Mirror, Metropolis, 6:00.. hell, pretty much most of the stuff Kevin has done.
