The earlier stuff is much better. At least "In Your Multitude" and
    "Parallel Minds" are, anyway.

OK, with all of this talk about Derek vs. Kevin and LitS vs PMU, I
thought I'd throw in a different twist on this.

Now that the Chroma Key disc has been released, I have been comparing
it to FII. My conclusion: The "Baby" that was Dream Theater (I&W,
Awake) has been split right down the middle.

The Dream - This is Kevin Moore. Chroma Key is filled with mood,
imagery and feeling. The abstract lyrics only help to create the mood.
Aside from some nice piano playing, there is no "wankery" here.

The Theater - This is the other half. The pyrotechnics, chops, and
insane playing are all here. The long songs, time changes, solos, and
general prog mayhem that have always been a trademark of Dream Theater
    still remain.

This may describe some of the different opinions out there about Derek
vs Kevin, and FII vs earlier DT. Fans who loved DT because of the
chops will like the addition of Derek. He's a chops/jam kinda player.

Those that were drawn to DT by "mood" songs like WFS, Space-Dye Vest,
LSoaD, LTL, and Surrounded may miss Kevin.

]From a song standpoint, Kevin seemed to be able to add the proper (and
often subtle) synth that allowed a song to build to some kind of
climax point. The funny thing about the discussion of LitS vs PMU is
that LitS is the one song on FII that does build in similar way.

Since Derek was more involved in the writing of LitS, maybe it's just
a matter of giving him some free reign and time to add this dimension
to songs. For the most part, it seems that he has jumped right in and
jammed just as well as anyone, but for one reason or another, he
hasn't added that mood and "building to climax" aspect. (OK, maybe he
does build to climax, but we're not talking about stage presence right
    now.) ;o)

So anyway, Kevin has mood to spare, but the chops are no longer there.
DT has all the chops, but has less mood than on earlier releases.
Maybe the baby wasn't cut exactly down the middle, but it has
    definately changed.

    my $.04, BH

Thought the jam would find this rather interesting. I read this on the
    Official Sabian website:

Rod Morgenstein recently visited SABIAN to develop some new cymbal sounds
(for more info see August News Releases on this site). In addition to
gigging with the Dixie Dregs and the Rudess/Morgenstein Project, Rod has
another band (how does he find the time?) called Platypus. Newsline heard
an advance copy of the disc... it's great rock with a fusion twist... and
liked it a lot. Said Rod: "We're in the studio and just going for it...
playing for fun." The rest of the lineup is guitarist Ty Tabor of King's
X, and Derek Sherinian and John Myung of Dream Theater on keys and bass
respectively. Look for a Platypus tour with Liquid Tension Experiment
(featuring Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci) later this
    year.

Sounds pretty good to me :o)

yea , xdtvoc1@AOL.com IS his name , and i chatted with him once, he's a pretty
    cool guy.
i'm sure he just reminisces about his old days on the board for the purpose
of, well , being consistent with the fact that the post will be on the dream
theater boards. he showed me what he's doing now, some web business, i dont
know ANYTHING about business, so i couldn't tell ya anything about it, but he
isn't jobless these days. however, he doesn't seem to be pursuing a singing
career (no pun or whatever intended)

just a question: have you guys always pondered about him and discussed him in
such a manner, or is it just since i posted his video offer? i havent been
around that long so obviously i wouldnt really know, but if you do feel bad
for him, dont, he's doing fine for himself, and if you get the oppurtunity
(sorry, offer valid for AOL members only), talk to him sometime (after
confirming that he is not busy, if he isn't), it's an energizing experience,
    to say the least

a rather long-winded answer to not such a long-winded question, but there you
    have it

    as always, enjoy

Ahhh, only if you want ultra 80's cheese and neoclassical cheese. If you
mean the shreddier side as in their heaviest stuff, i.e. the Awake era,
then you would have to be listening to totally different music, like
*etallica and Megadeth. Lemur Voice resembles a more IaW sort of sound,
and they rock HARD! And if you like a heavy sound with less shred and more
ambience, try Ocean Machine! And early Solitude Aeturnus is quite
progressive, while doomy, if you can find one of their first 2 CD's (out of
    print).

Now I'm not saying that you can't like S-X and all those bands, but to me
they a) all sound the same (neoclassical wankery) with even SINGERS who
sound the same (everyone really likes to imitate Geddy Lee, huh), and b)
don't necessarily shred, but just play fast riffs (tho Angra's guitarist is
    pretty good).

I think it's because I play a classical instrument (oboe) but playing
classical music on electric instruments makes me want to burn things...it
totally irks me. Am I the only person who feels like this??!

Ahh, anyway, I haven't posted in ages...not like y'all missed me.

    Take care,
    Erica

It's KHAN! KHAN! KHAN!!!! Not Kahn. And it's Roy, not Ray. :)

Actually I believe that Roy's real last name is Khantatat, since that's
what appears in some of the songwriting credits from earlier albums. Don't
ask me why he shortened it.

Yes, "Flow" is good, but "In Your Multitude" is one of the best prog
albums *ever*, hands down. Conception rules. Or ruled, since they're now
defunct with Roy fronting Kamelot. (Anybody know what Tore Ostby's up to
    nowadays?)

What about King Crimson. I am not saying that NM's intro is blazing fast,
but try to count that out. yes, it sounds like it is in 4/4 or whatever,
but the guitar and synth are playing totally different things and if one
person got lost, it would botch the whole intro. Remember, int he
beginning of the FII tour, even the band botched the intro, didn't they?
yes, KC may be more technically proficient, and I haven't heard enough of
them, except Thrack, maybe, but the original topic was that Derek wasn't a
prog keyboardist, and I will argue that if one knows enough technique and
theory, it doesn't matter, he can learn. Besides, didn't he listen to prog
music as well as hard rock while growing up?

    >> I'll let others discuss the actual show itself, and just go >> on record as it being the best show I have ever seen the >> band do

A great show indeed !! Really decent setlist (for a "standard" setlist). I always want to hear some more obscure songs, but for a standard setlist, this had a great selection.

    >> (apart from the fact that they were just too damn loud).

Well put - I like loud but this was too loud. The sound seemed to distort on more than one occasion.

    >> Lines in the Sand

It really amazes me how much better this sounds in the middle of the set (well, at least not as an opener). Maybe they have had the chance to fine-tune the mix or whatever. And I liked Derek's opening solo.

    >> Under a Glass Moon

This always seems to sound so great live. ALWAYS. Very fresh sounding indeed.

    >> Hollow Years

They seemed to be doing too much instrumentally for Hollow Years. Maybe they need to go minimalist and lose the keys, I dont know. Maybe the "too loud" part made it sound more mushed together. I seemed to hear a lot of proximity effect on the vocals (maybe this was due to where I was sitting which was in front of the overhead speakers, maybe this was happening all through the show and it was just more apparent on a more quiet song).

    >> Sitting Down for a DT show ............

    SUCKS !!

This is the worst. And this comment is coming from a carcass for which Carbon-dating is not far down the road !! I have had to suffer through this twice at the Casino Ballroom and at the Berklee show on the Awake tour while you could stand it was still an auditorium with seats welded to the floor. Yucko !!

MP - How about Mama Kins in Boston next time ????? A relatively new club, no seats anywhere and a great new sound system. To me, Mama Kins seems like too perfect a match.

    >> The first show after a layoff .......

Always seems to sound so tight. One would think that it would take a show or two to get back into the groove but no dice. Recall the 90 minute thing at Lupos last fall to start the tour ?? Another amazing performance.

    >> Choon-Kang

    Hey, nice tattoos !!

    >> Jon Finn as an opener

Hey, these guys are great as an opener !! Finn has a new CD coming out in September. I am sure that there will be reviews on the jam. Great jazz/fusion/rock/chops. Whoever set this arrangement up is one cool motherfuck !!

He could be the best guitar player in the world, and he's still only one man. I think it's helpful to the band to have a keyboard player who can play key sounds when needed AND can double some guitar parts when THAT is needed. You make it sound like JP should be offended that anyone would dare try and sound like a guitar around him. That's ridiculous. LIsten to a DT album sometime and hear the guitar parts that are going on UNDER one of JP's solos. Obviously an overdub, but how do you recreate that in a live environment. In this case, Derek is the perfect choice to "help out". That being the case, why not just let him do it in the studio in the first place?

    > You want ballsy keys? Listen to The Mirror\Lie, Puppies on Acid, A > Crack in the Mirror, Metropolis, 6:00.. hell, pretty much most of the > stuff Kevin has done.

It's been beaten to death here, but Kevin did his thing and Derek does his. Given his obvious keyboard prowess, I'm willing to accept his choices for sound patches - if he thinks a guitar-like patch is the right sound, so be it.

Can we say blanket statement here? The keys would've been better and Al not composed? maybe not al, but as far as the keys, this depends on yourpreference. I will say this, regardless, Kevin's sounds would not be the jd800/dw8000/o1w pro that we heard on Awake. He moved to Kurzweil now, didn't he? He probably tossed out the old gear too, or is he still using it? Either way, the sound of the album would've been different. But would it be more proggy? Considering Kevin's love of industrial music, the band would've probably combined prog and industrial, an interesting idea, but somewhat scary. Either way, we wouldn't have had awake 2 or images and words 2. And ACOS may have been the same as it is on subconscious. But then again, maybe not. Imagine a more industrial sounding ACOS.

My friend works security at the pnc bank arts center, but couldn't get me tickets. I have no money as usual to buy tickets, and no ride to get there if I did. Now, I am not begging for a free ride, but if anybody wants to donate some assistance, I would love you. All I ask for is a review of the show. I am not too concerned with the Deep Purple side, but the Dream Theater and ELP set lists and highlights would be all I want. And if you got a spare ticket you can't get rid of, I can write you an IOU or even try to make some copies of DT rarities that I have, including an Interview with Derek from 1996. I can do the PNC bank or Jones beach show, whichever. But if nobody has any extras or doesn't want any dt rarities, just send me a review, please.

You know, PMU didn't do much for me either. To me, PMU is just another metal song, done a little better than most metal songs by a very talented band. If I heard PMU, I would've only been mildly impressed. But I heard Ytsejam, and that was it. i had to know what this band was about. Yes, PMU is the popular song, but let's try a more fair comparison. LITS vs TTT, Lits vs Metropolis, LITS vs UAGM, LITS vs Ytsejam, LITS vs TKH, LITS vs OAMOT, LITS vs AFTERLIFE, LITS vs LTL/WFS, LITS vs SCARRED, 6:00, mirror/lie, caught in a web, sdv, or a mind beside itself. OR LITS vs ACOS. Try those.

Let's assume you are right that Derek didn't have anything to do with acos. Now explain how the final version is so different from the bootlegged version on the Images and Words tour with Kevin on keys. And I know Derek enough to know that he will never play a solo that he didn't write, so the ACOS solo is definitely his. All his. he may have borrowed parts from Kevin, but that solo is very different from kevin's.
