    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

It's quite amusing to see the Kevin vs. Derek thread come up over and over,
because there's seldom anything said that hasn't been said before. We're
not breaking any new ground on this, people. Can't we drop it?

Myself, I'll just reiterate what I say every time the thread repeats itself:

I liked Kevin's playing with DT.
I like Derek's playing with DT.
I think Kevin is a very good keyboardist and writer.
I think Derek is a very good keyboardist and writer.

    What more need be said?

    Ta,
    Phil

Let's see, last I knew Metallica is still being carried by a larger fan base
than ever, and are doing much better than when they wrote stuff like Master
of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. Let's see... But then, how can you even
mention Metallica? They're not prog, not even their old stuff. You listen
to Metallica? You are not a true prog-metal fan!!! Bzzzzzz...!
    AHHHHHHH!!!!
    </quote>

New Metallica is really not my cup of tea. Metallica, while maybe not being
prog-metal in the sense of DT or FW, certainly was willing to mess around
and be different during their early years. Hell, long songs with ambitious
concepts sure sounds kinda prog to me. But the new stuff... it's just not
right, having this countrified alterna-metal. I loved it when they "kicked
ass." That's what good metal does.... it kicks ass!

Then again, when Metallica kicked ass, I was what, 4 or 5? The only music I
was into then was the Police, Kraftwerk, and Beethoven because my mom
listened to them a lot. I'm still into them as I approach the age of
    majority.

Metallica *was* certainly much more progressive than, say, Judas Priest (who
"kick ass" too, but not in the same way). Without them, I bet you anything
prog-metal wouldn't have been created. Sure, Queensryche was a more direct
influence, but Metallica is the grand-daddy of the whole thing.

The same applies to me and other friend Ytsejammers. On the other
hand, James LaBrie wasn't exactly one of the most kind people that I've
met, if you know what I mean.

And Derek seemed to be really high that night, man! I'd love to
talk with Portnoy too. Both Petrucci and John Myung were so cool. Perhaps
JLB could learn a bit more with his bandmates...

Back to my point, Derek was cool, brings new influences to the
band and writes interesting music. I'm fine with him in the band, but I
still miss a more "serious" approach in the lyrics and darker music. But
I'm sure that the guys will change with time (or I sure hope so :-) ).

This KM vs. DS talk as been going on for months now. Hasn't everything been said? Can't we move on to something else? Maybe a more possitive topic. As long as DT keeps making good music I don't care if Derek is humping live chickens in his basement.

I agree. I've heard from official sources that it's confirmed.

Roger continues: Will he be selling his stuff for 50% off? :-) Really, I'm not that fond of a meeting in a store, but for the lack of a better place (better place = place where I can eat :-) ), that's ok.

Well, he wont be selling stuff cheaper, at least he didnt mention anything like that, but I can try and negotiate. Look, I'm not trying to promote his store, I just thought of a place to meet and listen to some good music. Then we could go to a Place to Eat...:)

    >the album is very solid. That said, where should I go from here? I want to >eventually get Dreamspace, Fourth Dimension, Fright Night, and Twilight Time. >Can someone suggest an order of purchase or which songs are particularly >great

First I think you should buy Fourth Dimension...It's the album that is more similar to Episode/Visions...The vocal on this one already is Timo Kotipelto (which is much better than Tolkki as a vocalist) and you should know some songs from this album from the live "Visions Of Europe" ("Twilight Symphony" - that is one of my favorite Strato songs,"Against The Wind" and "Distant Skies")...This album has other wonderful songs too like "We Hold The Key" (another perfect song),"Lords Of The Wasteland",and the instrumental "Stratovarius"...If you like Episode and Visions I'm 99% sure that you'll like this one...After you bought 4th Dimension you should get Dreamspace or Twilight Time...These albums are with the guitarrist Timo Tolkki in the vocals,as you may know...He sings well, but has evident limitations in this aspect, reason why he called another singer to the band...The albums have a more traditional metal sound and there isn't any fantastic instrumental in the akbums (the albums have instrumental songs - "Atlantis" in Dreamspace,a short piece for acoustic guitar and "Metal Frenzy" on Twilight Time,a cool song but can't be compared with instrumentals like "Stratovarius" or "Holy Light")...And after you buy these albums,if you like them, you should try Fright Night...FN has almost nothing to do with the band's actual sound, and has a not very good production...But it's a good metal album...Ahh,there is a version of this album that comes with the tracks from "Will The Sun Rise" EP as bonus tracks...This EP has 5 good live versions of songs from Episode and 4th Dimension...

    --------------

    >Of the 2 bonus tracks on >"Visions", I know that one was a live recording of "Uncertainty", and the >other track is "Black Diamond". Is that a demo of BD? Or is it a studio >outtake... what's the difference between that track and the "official" track >on the album ?

These bonus tracks were made to the Japanese version of Visions...But by a mistake in the pressing of the album some versions from other countries have the bonus (and some don't have and have a video ok the song "Kiss Of Judas")...The "Black Diamond" is a demo version...There are some differences in the lyrics and in the solos of Jens and Timo, from what I remember now...

Damon, How can you say my post was counterproductive if it is leading to the cause of ending this stupid hillbilly shit debate. I can't honestly state that I was impressed by your response since you are suppose to be a Dream Theater fan and you have spunky the love monkey's balls to say that they are lacking in content. C'mon get real. We are talking about a band which explores music as a whole not as some Nirvana style 2 chord cheap cash in fucking jingle. Maybe my post fanned some flames and maybe just maybe it also got through that we are wasting a lot of time on a very stupid topic.

Now as for the set lists and show reviews, hey just ask. I'm going to see them the 19th of August in Toronto. If people were so desparate to see set lists then why didn't or hasn't anybody taken the tickets for the show in Detroit on the 15th that I can't make.(I have 4 of them including a parking pass)

On another note I'm glad that you liked the donkey ass mother fucker line but in the future I would refrain from telling someone what messages to avoid even if you've been on the list since '95. I could give a rats ass whether or not my opinion is liked because it is just that: an opinion. In comparison some of the topics I've seen, the one I wrote was innocent.

    Hey Jammers-

Here's what I thought of the "ELP"/DP/DT concert. If you want to be surprised, then scroll down past this message.

    **SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**SPOILERS**

DT took the stage to a half-empty Jones Beach theater and played for about 40min. Here's the set list (I may be wrong with the order): 1. NM 2. PMU 3. 6:00 4. HY 5. Metropolis pt 1 JP threw in the usual Pink Floyd and Metallica riffs into the solos (i dont remember where.) They were dicked by the theater crew because #1, while JP soloed, the spotlight was on DS and #2, it was still light out so the stage lights did nothing and the monitors were invisible (good idea to put projection screens outdoors in daylight, huh?). However, the mix was excellent as was the performance.

Then there was ELP. "Hated it" Talk about going apeshit on keyboards. It was a little too much. He was the whole band. And he did his little concierto piece which was a little unfair to his bandmates. However, after more than an hour of keyboard wanking, the drum solo at the end was AWESOME!!. Other than that, my friend, my bro and i cracked jokes at them :)

Finally, DP took the stage. No special appearances by a DT or ELP members :( Perfect Strangers was played though. I dont quite remember their setlist but they jammed for a while going back and forth playing what the other just played. Basically a game of follow the leader. That was awsome!! And the guitar solo was Pink Floyd-ish that was UNBELIEVABLE! You just had to hear it.

Well, there you have it. If you were there, i was wearing a Black Sabbath shirt (i had no DT shirts until now) and black pants with a beat up Colorado Rockies hat. I was in Orchestra E. If any got this on tape (video, cassete, DAT, whatever) please make me a copy :)

Everyone has a place. A place where they feel relaxed and where for a while life is kind of good, amidst all that other stuff. Kids have their treehouses, people have their rooms, or apts., houses, whatever. I have Jones Beach. While seeing the DT/ELP/Deep Purple show tonight, my mind wandered a little to the sky and the full moon that got covered by shifting clouds. Then there was that really quick airplane that cut across the sky at an incredible rate and the birds flying around, catching incredible music. And then the water. Surrounded by the water. An ocean that seems still, until you look where the light reflects on it and you see the tiny waves. The boats in the distance. The people in the amphitheater smiling and enjoying the show. This is Jones Beach. When I first heard about this concert I wanted to paint a picture/ banner/ sign kind of thing. Would have been really nice, water blending in with sky. birds in ytsejam configurations flying overhead... lighthouse beaming spotlights onstage.. But in reality, just as I have no musical skill.. I kind of lack artistic skill. I think I could be happy seeing almost any show at Jones Beach, but tonight was special because Dream Theater was there. They were back on LI, as was I. I had to take a subway to the LIRR to a bus... And Dream Theater was there, and not in a tiny club or bar, where people are pressed against you, pushing and moshing. It was nice to be in a seated venue. I know I'm in a minority, but I like to relax and watch the show without having to worry if the glasses will stay on my face for the whole night. I've had the chance to see DT a good dozen or so times (unfortunately never caught them on the Images tour).. and yes, it is exciting been right there by the stage. But anyway, I'm rambling. They played great tonight. Nice to hear 6:00 again. Always great to hear Metropolis. Still remember the first time that song clicked for me. I'm not a musician and sometimes the music needs to sink in so I can catch in on some level. Usually lyrics and vocals, since after all it was the words that convinced me to buy the cd without hearing it first. And hearing Hollow Years tonight. Gasp. I mean I can still see James up there singing "Carry me to the shoreline/ Bury me in the sand/ Walk me across the water..." and the beach was the perfect backdrop for it all. I don't know. DT did have a really short set list. Kind of like when you are dying of thirst and someone hands you a small little cup. You drink that so fast and it's so good, but then you get greedy and want more, partially forgetting what you were fortunate enough to just have. What else? Until tonight I didn't realize I liked Deep Purple so much. Maybe I am getting old :) It was nice to watch some of the ushers and workers and the crowd in general getting into DT. I definitely think DT got some good exposure here. One of my coworkers last week wanted to borrow some white-out and as I was searching for that I said he could borrow some cds if he wanted and showed him a copy of I&W. He looked and said maybe another time. Then he was shocked when he heard DT is touring with Deep Purple cause he's a huge fan of all of that stuff. He would have been at the show tonight but had other plans. I let him borrow A Change of Seasons since I think he'll like some of the covers. I haven't gotten the cd back yet so that could be some time of sign. Anyway I got home safe tonight. Kind of tired, in a way just thinking about the show and little chills I got throughout the night. I don't want to go to work tomorrow. Suppose sleep would be a good thing. Maybe you got something from this post. Maybe you didn't. Sorry I didn't see more jammers at the show. Nice to see the people I did see. NY isn't like Cali with the parties and general hangout things. NY isn't like Boston with Skadz, the bbq's and whatnot. But NY can be really nice. Thanks Dream Theater for another great memory. -Rachel

    Hey,

The compelete email with the subject re : Empty Tremor's free promo tape has been sent out by my brother and it's his opinion. Everbody has his opinion so don't flame at him.

Some of you are very very cheap people. You use the word "Fuck" more than 10 times in just one mail. You hear inteligent music and thinks that makes you an inteligent person. If it's so, please don't start a flame war eveytime someone has other opinions that you. That's life. My mom loves DT, Shadow Gallery, Empty Tremor. King Crimson as well as Michael Bolten, Bee Gees, Celion Dion and so.

My brother Arman has a different taste of music than I have. He love's powermetal la Helloween or Startovarius. I don't like them that much. I love Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush and he dosen't like them that much. But we both love Prog metal.

I MYSELF LOVE FII BECAUSE IT'S GREAT AND IT'S A DT ALBUM. BUT IN SOME POINTS, MY BROTHER HAS RIGHT. WOULD YOU LOVE FII ALSO WHEN IT WOULDN'T BE FROM DT ? I don't think so. Would Hollow Years be still a great song if it would be from Michael Bolten and not DT ?

The sound of FII is too 90's (I don't think that it sound like alternative) and some of the songs are not even 30 % prog but I know that DT were under presure and they had to write more commercial songs to become a chance for recording the album.

And I think that Speak To Me is the worst DT song ever. You know, the song would be good for U2 but it's too low for DT's standart. I just hope that the next album will show everone that DT are the only prog gods on earth.

Anyway, don't flame at my brother. Everyone has the right to tell his opinion.

Btw, Empty Tremor kick ass and that's for sure ;-)

The first part of that is admirable. The second part of that is disgraceful!!! I couldn't care less how many notes you like to play. Personally, as a guitarist, I will usually take the middle of the notes-per-measure road. That's all up to personal opinion. Frankly, you've lost a great deal of respect, in my eyes, by saying women are the reason you play. I enjoy your work with Dream Theater and Brad Gillis's Gilrock Ranch is one of my favorite albums, ever. NOW, whenever I hear that really cool keyboard part in "Opus Winifrus", I can't help but imagine that you said "Hey Brad, I could get a really great blow job for writing this", when you wrote it. Thanks, Derek!! I liked my imagination of that song better the way it was before!

I'm glad your priority scale is straight!!!! hmmmmm...did you ad the "playing with the best bands" thing as an afterthought...??? I thought so....see my comments above!

Another question before I continue.....Did you ever miss a gig because you were getting sucked off???

    >As far as kevin moore goes, i met him one time and found him to be a >gentleman. I have expressed my respect for him in many interviews, and I wish >him the best with his career.

I know, I read the interviews. I have respect for Kevin as well. I'll be willing to bet that he's not making music to get a cheap lewinski.

    >Can this stupid debate please end ? ....surely there are more interesting >things to talk about like charlie dominici's pathetic video that he is trying >to sell!!

Actually, I'm quite sure that you'll make a great deal of enemies and hatred by this simple letter you wrote. What do you care about Charlie's Video? You weren't even in the band back then.....Oh I forgot....Kevin was!

    Peace out yourself,

    M O J O M A N
