This band obviously suffered from a poor estimate of actual start time
versus stated start time on my part. I shifted everything back two hours
and completely missed these guys. Just when I thought I knew in which
timezone Powermad was taking place. :-)

In what could have been the biggest tragedy to befall me at Powermad I
missed about half of the first song done by these guys. The rest of the
show was mindblowing. These guys define greatness in progressive metal to
me. They had all the elements that I'm looking for: An aor-toned singer, a
great shredding guitarist, a great bassist, and a Peart-inspired drummer.

Josh Pincus wins the award for best singer and best keyboard player
(closely followed by Thorne here) from me for his exact match to my style
tastes. He sounds quite a bit like Dennis Deyoung on vocals to me. The
keyboard leads on the Korg were killer - comparable to the greatness of the
keys on Images and Words. His non-lead keys were very good, very varied,
and very un-Moore-like if you are worried that he might just be a clone.

The entire band is definitely heavy into the whole progressive metal sound.
If originality matters to you more than anything else, then they are
probably not the band for you. But if, like me, you are always looking for
some new ultra-melodic prog metal superstars, these guys are it.

I had heard the sound clips on these guys web site, but nothing else. There
were some demo tapes floating around the net a couple of months ago, but I
missed getting one. I did pick one up at Powermad and it smokes. They have
signed with Magna Carta, which seems logical. These guys are gonna give
Shadow Gallery a good run for their money as best MC band. I am totally
stoked about hearing these guys on CD, and I'm really hoping that they
    don't get the standard Varney no-tour, no-promotion, no-money treatment.
These guys win the band of the year award for Powermad from me.

After their set, Keith Menser, the Powermad organizer, mumbled some
negative stuff about his negative experience working with the band that
sorta pissed me off. Josh told me he apologized to Keith for playing longer
than they should have, and I hope they can work it out so that Ice Age
kicks butt at Powermad again next year.

It was a shame that these guys had to follow Ice Age, because they too were
    excellent.

I knew these guys from the Perpetual Motion board and they had a bunch of
trouble just getting onto the Powermad bill. I've had their CD "The Actual"
for a couple of months now. It is independently, but professionally,
produced and is very good. They sound to me like a toned-down
commercial-era Fates Warning band with a really different sounding singer.
He has a little bit of that Dave Mustaine growling sound going, but nowhere
as annoying as Mustaine is to me. Their musical is not extremely technical
in terms of pure difficulty, but the compositions are complex and feature
    plenty of changes.

They arrived at Powermad not knowing even what day they would be playing.
They were told that they needed "no equipment", so that is what they
brought. Division was kind enough to loan them their instruments. Then each
day they weren't even told when they would be going on. They took all these
difficulties in stride and put on a great show. Sort of like rolling a 300
game in bowling with a house ball and house shoes. This band wins the CD
duplication award for pulling off everything live with no problems,
    especially all the time changes.
They sounded a little more aggressive vocally and their mix was a little
rougher than the CD, but overall they were dead on.

They definitely proved themselves as a big time up and coming band that
everyone will have to keep their eyes on.

Amazingly enough, the lead singer partied himself into near-oblivion the
night before and showed absolutely no ill effects from it on stage.

Purely power metal. Not normally my stuff, but they completely kicked ass!
Their show is pure energy and excitement. There are a lot more progressive
elements in the music than I had noticed in the past. They were the only
purely power band there to have a noticable NWOBHM influence in their
music. I think that this is what won them over for me. They definitely win
the best dual guitarist award for Powermad. Their harmony playing was
beautiful and dead on! Great job Mike and Matt. They also win the award for
most entertaining. The entire crowd that was still there was totally into
them. They definitely how to put on a live show. Scott is a fantastic
vocalist delivering total vocal power. The did a superb adaptation of
Sabbath's Heaven and Hell which will be on the new CD. They capped off the
best three-consecutive-band performance and were the perfect way for me to
finish Powermad. Great job guys and you've definitely won me over for
    getting the new CD.

    interesting question.

if were talking about something uptempo and powerful, id agree with Pat Benatar. (good call whoever mentioned her, i dont remember who, sorry) however, my personal favorite "power" female voice is Ann Wilson of Heart.

id love to hear patti labelle with them. i swear that woman scares the hell out of me the things she can do. or i wanna hear patti sing something with doug pinnick. actually fuck that - i just like patti and anything she sings is fine by me.

if Tori Amos ever did anything with them, i would just blow up. my head would just blow into pieces. ok i cant think about that anymore.

if were talking about something more along the lines of SDV, i like the idea of Enya or Loreena. however, i gotta go with Sarah McLachlan. she would be perfect for something like that i think. Trisha Yearwood is also coming to mind. both extremely soothing voices.

First off, I think posting each band review individually was a GOOD idea. Less cutting and pasting for me since I only want to reply to one of them; just the reason Joe did it this way. Thanks Joe.

By the way, sorry I didn't get to meet you. I guess you were hanging with the Perpetual Motion crew. I did manage to meed the infamous Mike Blevins from that bunch ;), however. Most of us Ytsejammers were at the far table closest to the kid selling the hotdogs.

Oddly, for me, Event was the outstanding act. Despite the technical difficulties, which to my understanding was a messed up sequencer that plays the keyboard parts along with a click track, they played extremely well and their music was by far the most interesting. I might feel this way, though, because I have their EP "Electric Skies" so I know most of the stuff they played. And honestly, the first time I heard their music, it didn't click for me either. I had to listen to the disc at least five times before I realized "Hey, this shit is really COOL." So that might be why it seems so few people dug their set... the music takes a little time to digest.

Well, it's certainly an interesting thought. It's very tricky because DT is PRESENT band. Personally, my musical background were primarily old bands (Zep, Purple, Jimi, jazz rock...) and with them you don't have a problem on the issue! You might get happy if they suddenly decide to reunion and do some tour, or appear as guests on festivals, concerts. BUT, talking about present band which we all care about a lot is not that simple. It's quite intriguing to think, "Oh men, what kind of album DT will come up in ... 2007?" :-). Cool! But we neven know. Will they dtay togethr? Hope so! Will they be succesfull in all that time? Er,... what do you think, having on mind present situation in the music industry, EmpTyV stuff and so on? Where is the music heading? I mean, will some of these wonderful presen bands REMAIN IN THE MUSIC HISTORY? I find it a very interesting question! "Legendary band", sounds great, but you must win the title! Which one of the present bands will pass the test of time? That's an interesting topic to talk about! And yeah, it's DT connected, amen! :-) Not like the previous I mailed (ya know, the Janet Jackson stuff ;-)

    So, anyone?

Yeah, I know it's probably a week late, buck who really gives a flying, whoopdy-dooing whahoo. Really good jazz/fusion stuff to look into would probably be:

Al Dimeola- He is the man. While I don't like to say a certain guitarist is the best (and I stayed out of the Ed/Randy snafoo) I do have to say that Al Dimeola takes the cake. He can play just about anything and it sounds better that anything you've ever heard. His playing with Chick Corea was amazing (check out some of the live versions of Spain, a personal fave) and his solo work is astounding. Give Elegant Gypsy or Casino a listen. He's a Berklee grad too : )

Chick Corea- What a pianist. I don't even know where to tell you to start. He is an incredible writer and performer and has seemingly had the knack of getting some of the most talented jazzmen to perform with him on whim. Almost anything from his supergroup Return to Forever is worth a listen.

James Gates- One of the finest soprano sax players in existance. He plays more contemporary jazz than the two mentioned above, but he is a true performer and musician. He's on several other artist's recordings at the moment and he has another solo album coming out in October. His stuff is kinda hrd to find, but its woth the hunt. Another Berklee grad too : )

Enough of my incoherent babbling. I hope this helps.
