The difference between death, black, white, purple, and multi-colored metal is usually the color of pubic hair they decide to dye it that week.
Also there's the patriotic metal, which consists of the red white and blue of course... great marketing scheme, just ask Tommy Hilfiger...
Speaking of which, I heard the demos of Metropolis Part II, and Petrucci has asked Dimebag for some consultation and is thus prototyping the new Ibeenhad 8-string detuned for that extra crunch and he's decided to use two televisions tuned into static for that extra crunchiness... Labrie has been kicked out and replaced with Barney for the song. They have officially labeled this song... Brown Metal... since it's not quite Black... and Death is the Dancing Turtle...

You could put Possessed in this category along with the early Earache bands - Carcass, Napalm Death, Terrorizor....

generally i'd agree with this statement except on the bahalf of Emperor and Mayhem....both of these bands had excellent drummers...see Hellhammers drumming on de Misteriis Dom Sathanas....it is relentless and technical....Also Euronymous was a great guitarist, not a shredder by any means, but he could play hypnotically....

I'll be at all 12 DT holiday shows. Just look for a person wearing pants, a shirt, socks and shoes. Don't worry you can tell me apart from the other 1,000 people by my DT shirt. Also please stop by and say, "hi!" I've solved my problem of maiming, roasting and ingesting random people who say "hi!" to me. So you won't end up like those last few unfortunate souls... :)
Recently, I picked up 'Transmutation Live' from Praxis, which is a band Buckethead is in. This is one of the great. It has four songs and lasts 60 minutes. It has Buckethead on guitar, Brain on drums, Bill Laswell on bass and a bunch of DJs. I forget the name of the DJ group but its something like the San Francisco Pickle Crew. These DJs are really good and add a lot to the music and have played with Primus before. If you're into ambient, jazz, funk, metal, shred and improv check out this CD. You won't be disappointed.

Death was probably the first "true" death metal band...But before Death there were bands that were "almost death metal"...Bands like Celtic Frost/Hellhammer,Possessed , Destruction , etc have "death metal songs" but aren't "death metal bands"...And some early death metal bands:Necrophagia (a little thrash,but death metal was beggining) , Carcass (grind,in the beggining),Morbid Angel,etc...

In Flames is a heavy metal/melodic metal band with a death metal singer...Their instrumental songs are totally melodic metal instrumentals...

Crimson is a good album...But I think you forgot probably the band that started it all: At The Gates...Acoustic passages (even entire acoustic songs,with violins,etc) , melodic solos 2 guitars harmonized solos,etc...

IMO the first "true" black metal bands were Venom and Bathory...After there were the first Norwegian bands , that,as you said, didn't produce well the album , wasn;t very much preocupated with the music , etc...The first bands were probably Darkthrone , Burzum and Mayhem...Other well known band of this kind is Marduk...

I think Carcass is a death metal band,not grind...At least after "Symphonies Of Sickness" or the masterpiece "Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious"...Grindcore bands = Mortician , Brutal Truth , etc...

The difference between Black and Death metal is that Black metal is exclusively satanic. From what I've noticed most Black metal has screechy vocals as compared to the glutteral growling of death metal.

Yeah, http://www.compassnet.com/grump/tour.htm shows it was last updated on 12/15/98. It has them in Canada on the 28th and at the Blue Note on Feb. 4.
Wonder what's up there, 'cuz I wanna catch them in either NH or CT. They show that the NH gig is a "Date Change". It'd be nice to plan according to the right date. What if you drive a long way, show up on the wrong night, and Dream Theater is playing an unannounced gig or something? Would they honor the tickets? :)
