        Ok.

It's good to be back with Internet access after one week of being
incommunicable.

The sad thing is that it seems that I lost some e-mails. So, I'd
like to ask you that if you sent me some e-mails since Dec 24th, please
resend them.

        Thank you very much, Roger...

Yes, there is... There's a program called ra2wav that does what you're looking for.

NO! That's evil! Don't record to tape and then record back, man.

I think I've read two posts where people are saying The Mirror (off of Awake, right? Dream Theater?) is in a C-based riff. Somebody even said they had perfect pitch and (clearly that makes him THE authority) said it was in C.

It's in B for Chrissakes. Either that or my guitar tuner's fucked up and I've been tuning my guitar a half step flat all this time!

>It's a B.

It's a C. :P I'm pretty sure of it, cuz I had to recreate it on a 6-string. As I recall John pulls a quick little harmonic downsweep across the 3rd fret and then just chords the C straight from the sweep. And that spouted directly from the Korgs' mouth. Yadda yadda yadda. But then it could be a J chord. Those are a pain in the ass to hit. :)

Well, Cow, thanks for informing me the length of the CD.

Regarding the damn B or C debate, there's a quite easy way to decide which one it is: just extract the track to your harddrive and then use any program which does frequency analysis over the section that you think is B or C. This should give you the necessary information to decide which note that one is.

Background: central La is 440Hz and for each "small step" (I don't know the name of this in English and I'm not a musician) of "half notes", multiply (or divide) the frequency of the note by 2^{1/12}, the twelfth root of 2, assuming that you're using a well-tempered scale (I don't know if there are other scales used today -- again, I'm not a musician; I only know a bit of the Math behind it). If you multiply, you'll obviously get a higher note and, if you divide, you'll get a lower note. So, see what the most prominent frequency of the sample is and see how many potencies of 2^{1/12} are there between the note of the sample and 440Hz. This should be enough to decide which note is played. Or, if you prefer, ask JP. :-)

And regarding the "Where Are You Now?" MP3, well, I'll encode it and then I'll put it on my homepage this next week (I hope to be able to go to my University this next week, but I can't promise).

that sounds a bit complicated - just take a freshly tuned guitar (or a keyboard) and play the beginning of the mirror and find the note on the instrument. the transcription in the Awake book (which JP edited) has it as a rake across the 4th fret harmonics then a B. moo.

Bah! Fuck! You're right. It is a B. :P That's what I get for trying to remember from work. There I go playing Mr. Footeater once again. Ah, well. It must have been caused by the drug-induced can of soup I ate today.

Word of Warning. Avoid Campbell's Chunky Chicken Corn Chowder from now on. Goddamn, I ate something in it I thought was a chunk of chicken and was breathing fire for an hour. I had to suck down a can of EZ cheese to get the taste out. Ickybad, bumlooker. Are you looking at me bum? At least I couldn't think coherently for about 15 minutes afterward. No one noticed. Incoherent thought is the basis upon which all engineering firms are founded. :P

Wild, wild wild.

I fucked myself over, in that I didn't wait long enough to get Ron Thal's e-mail containing his pager number in time to meet him when we hit Jersey on our little DT world tour. But the shows were killer (though the video was TOO FUCKING LONG!). JP's playing has REALLY changed IMO since even the FII tour. He's sounding like some kind of DiMeola / Saraceno crossbreed. REALLY cool most of the time. Sherinian is DA MAN! He was doing a lot of his solos on polyphonic patches, like pianos and organs and stuff, and still sounding great. A totally different approach than a Kevin Moore type player. Much more Emerson sounding. Syrinx (Mike Ostrich) kicks all ass. All of the Ytse's we met were majorly cool. The dumpy little place that is "out of Bass Ale" right next to Toads SUCKS ASS. So does driving in Jersey. I don't recommend the state at all actually. It was great seeing all of the DT B-Sides and stuff. I was wishing for Metropolis II or Raise the Knife, but that's not too realistic, seeing as Met II will DEFINITELY be on the new album, and RTK may make it too. We learned a lot of things on this tour. I remembered how awesome Rush can be, for one. All of the first 4 shows are most definitely recorded, and I assume will be made available on a tape/cd tree. The individual who I am certain taped the shows will come forward with info soon on how he's going to do it. Just working out a way to be fair and DIRT cheap, while trying to prevent some booter from selling it. I think the plan is to offer these cds for blanks and postage, which is the ONLY way, IMO. There will probably also be a "best of" kind of compilation. It's already got a cool title. But that's a little ways off. The 5th show may or may not ever be available on the tape tree. The individual I know who taped was unable to attend, and I know there was a problem for part of the Toads show too. That one is more easily remedied. Don't mail me with questions about the boot shows. I may help distribute the freebies, but I didn't tape them, have no control or access to them currently. The next information you get on those will be from the individual who been dere an' done dat. Sherinian does a cool ass David Lee Roth impression. Diamond Derek :) Christina (AnalogGal) from Derek's web page etc, has a total NooYoaka accent. Ya gotta hear it some time. Cowall her ona phone sometime owah somethin'. :) Ideally I would have loved for there to be completely different sets (At least for the covers) at each show. I know that would be a weird thing to expect on a tour, but that's what I had hoped for. Everything but Birch Hill was just fantastic musically though, so that's all good. LaBrie sounded like I&W James again, I shit you not. He did beautifully everywhere but BH. Got to see Nightmare Cinema for the second time too. Always fun! I really like the new DT tunes (FII and after) a lot. WAYN, STM, and TWIUTB especially sounded awesome as hell. An album with that kind of material AND a Metropolis II would be bad assed. Skadz, I don't know why the fuck we drove your ass back to Boston, but you're welcome. :) Portnoy and Derek, you guys kicked my ass inside out.

Dat's all I got ta say right now. Happy new years!

Was the issue resolved about the "promo" OIAL CDs that CDNow was sending out? Were they actually Promo copies, or were they just misprinted?

BTW, I thought James nailed "Since I've Been Loving You" in the Philly show. The entire show was incredible. And seeing John Myung *almost* laugh during Nightmare Cinema was great, too. ;)
