Here's a question: does anyone have copies of Howard's old syndicated tv
show on tape? I doubt it...but you never know.

    >The FAQ is good, but
    >I'm not nearly as interested in what specific time during the movie a
    >sample was taken from,=20

This begins to sound vaguely narcissistic here. "*I'm* not nearly as
    interested".

The fact is, the FAQ can't be all things to all people, just like this list
is never going to be exactly what everyone wants it to be. We could do as
you say and start putting all kinds of useful/useless trivial little things
in there, but lets be realistic; at some point you have to draw the line.
]From here I can see a FAQ that approaches 1 MB in plain text and contains
every bit of minutiae right down to the bands' (and former members')
underwear preferences. That's something I'd rather *not* see.

    >I mean, think about it....here is a person who will have some contact
    >with the band. Isn't it about time we started using that power for more
    >information that just "was that sample at the beginning or end of Dead
    >Poet's Society, Mike?"

Translation: Isn't it time we start abusing that power a little bit more
and annoying Mike to give us more and more info until we piss him off so
bad the entire band begins to shun us and encourage other fans to spit on
    us at concerts?

Okay, maybe that's a little extreme, but....

It's the same as the petitions. Because of some "connection" with a band
member, suddenly people think we have a magical "power". News flash: We
    don't. We're just the extremely-rabid, moderately-computer-literate,
flame-suit-wearing Dream Theater fans. My suggestion would be not to abuse
what little "power" we *do* have.

    > listen to it differently.

Well, this is where we disagree, but that's OK. Close to the Edge is
one of my favorites too, but the highlight of these live tracks for
me is Turn of the Century. As for the studio stuff, I probably like
the KTA 2 stuff better simply because there's more of it. I do think
"Mind Drive" kicks some major ass. I also think that they should
have put all the new tracks on a separate album -- they would just
fit on one CD. Had they done this, it would have easily been my
favorite Yes album since Going for the One.

Sorry if I over-reacted to the original post, but I think that both
Keys to Ascension albums are classics, so I felt the need to defend
    KTA 2.

    Dream Theater Content:

I was listening to the DT/Steve Howe Yes medley from the covers gig
again the other day (from Dr. Mosh's web site). It is extremely
cool. Sure hope they officially release it one of these days (maybe
a B-side, or an extra track on the Metropolis 2 EP).

Hey, gang. My turn to jump in the fray. :)

    "Swallowed Beers"
to the tune of "Hollow Years"
    -Merlo, Gibaldi

He's just the kind of man
    You hear about
    Who leaves his family for
    A boys' night out
    They never saw the signs
    "Nickel Beers Tonight"
They couldn't stand to stay away

    Carry me to the bathroom
    I need a helping hand
Walk me across the dance floor
    I don't think I can stand

    Once the stool
    You're falling off of
    Is lifted off your shoulders
    Once the bouncer pounding
    over your head disappears
    The noise that you'll hear
Is the splashing down of swallowed beers.

She's just the kind of girl
    You're warned about
    She'll always want another
    She'll never be without
You buy her all her drinks
    You tell her everything
And then she turns and walks away

    Carry me to the bathroom
    I need a helping hand
Walk me across the dance floor
    I don't think I can stand

    Once the stool
    You're falling off of
    Is lifted off your shoulders
    Once the bouncer pounding
    over your head disappears
    The noise that you'll hear
Is the splashing down of swallowed beers.

Sorry for the NDTC here, but this will solve alot of problems that
people are having w/ downloading MP3 files from the web, and solve
them on the server side, more importantly. If the server is running
apache (which most good sites probably are, not sure if this works
with any other servers), create a file in the directory where the
files are stored called .htaccess In that file, add the following
    line:

    AddType audio/mpeg mp3

This will cause the server to serve the files as a binary, rather than
as text/html as I guess apache defaults to. I did email a change
request to the apache maintainers, but have not heard anything back
about this. Another solution is that (yuck) IE will download the
files as binary. I am not sure why it does this, and Netscape and
Lynx do not. This is something to mention in the web page, if you
can't get your server (or server admin) to fix the broken mime type
(if you have root, you can add mp3 to the audio/mpeg line in the
    mime.types file)

Damon asked, so here we go.

The TR-Rack is a one-rack space module, with 32 voice polyphony (16 for double-oscillator programs, which is most of them) and 16 channel multitimbral. You can set it up in Combi mode like other Korg units which gives you 8 channels miltitimbral, but it has a multi mode which gives you all 16.

The sounds are your standard Trinity (read: great) fare, no prophecy, just the samples. It has a really sophisticated effect processor in it, which lets you do 2 master effects, (one reverb and one chorus) plus a number of insert effects on the channels. The insert effects are really complicated, but let's just say that you can have a really good distortion on one channel, a good Leslie on another, and still have room for a third insert effect on a third channel. These are in addition to the master effects, so you can have both distortion and reverb.

Price: My dealer had it for $1149.00 plus tax, but I talked him down a bit.

It is really new, so your local shop may not be able to get you one quickly. My dealer is limited to one unit per month for now, and I got their first one after 3 days of it being in the store. It's a fun unit, and I'm going to be selling my old Proteus/1 as I no longer need it because of the TR-Rack.

I have only two questions for Eric/KAI. Do you still live at home with parents, and/or do you work for Verbatim? Because if neither of the above is true, I have a hard time understanding how you're going to keep up your CDR business with low prices like that. If I can't do it, AND Ryan Whitaker can't do it, AND Neil Elliott can't do it, AND Joe DiBella can't do it... see where I'm going with this? Russ Sundquist beats us *slightly* on price ($2), but his stuff is bare-bones like yours and he won't spring for the quality media (Verbatim silver/blue).

One of several things will happen: you probably are keeping a full time job to offset the costs, but you'll quickly find yourself with no time for it. You'll either have to hike prices to keep afloat financially, or your backlogs will make mine look like a wait at McDonalds, or you'll have to cut corners everywhere. The possible positive outcome is that if you last until fall, CDR media's price should put you in a good position to maintain your low price. I myself plan to have things at $13 or below by October, including color liners and color images on the discs themselves. Anyway, I applaud you for making what seems to be a sound business move, because the consumers will *love* you, but even as a competitor, I don't want to see your life go to hell because you didn't charge enough. It's happened to some large, successful companies, and it's a darned shame.

Anyway, however you're doing it, good luck, you have certainly upped the ante for the rest of us to become efficient enough to match you. Of course, we're going to wait and see if it's successful before we commit to it ourselves. :) And you may or may not wish to copy my CDs for people... even if I asked you not to, you still could (they're bootlegs after all) but all of us already doing this CDR thing have a "professional-courtesy" sort of agreement not to cross-sell each others stuff (for this reason I've also stopped selling Carpe Diem), so you may wish to have that same courtesy extended to you, should you start making custom titles.

To all: the Precious Things backlog is GONE and the Darkest of winters backlog is ALMOST gone! I've outdone myself! The era of near-immediate shipments on all titles is at hand, and her name is "Spring 1998"!! :) It's amazing what you can do when your e-mail connection is so bad that you just spend all your time making discs.

I've only been spot checking jams (about 100 left in the mailbox to work up a good headache over :) but I notice that the Yes thread seems to be alive and well!

It appears that the same kind of thing occurs with Yes that occurs with DT. That is, there are basically 6 groups:

    1) All things 'early Yes' rule, all else sucks 2) All things 'recent Yes' rule, all else sucks 3) All things Yes rule 4) All things Yes suck

    5) Most things Yes are quite enjoyable to me, I can find tunes throughout their almost 30 year history that groove, and I don't need to rip someone's orifice if they like something more than something else.

Does 1) remind you of those who think WDADU and I&W are the best DT?

Does 2) remind you of those who hate Charlie's voice :)

Does 3) remind you of threads which summoned a reply "I like DT too, but it doesn't mean I'll get down on my knees and blow them" :)

Does 4) remind you of Tempus? (hehehe, j/k Jeremy :)

Does 5) remind you of a normal person? If so, seek help, I'm not normal :)
