Hey there, ytsejammers!
I don't subscribe to ytsejam, but I'm a huge Dream Theater
fan who is interested in meeting other fans of DT and related bands.
My friend Paul told me that he has met several such people in his
area of the country through ytsejam, so I figured I'd try posting
a message here. I live in the Chicago area (Lisle, IL to be exact).
My musical interests center on progressive metal and extend into
plain-old metal and hard rock. Some of my favorite bands are Dream
Theater (obviously), Fates Warning, Megadeth, King's X, and Faith No More.
If you live nearby and are interested in getting together sometime to
listen to music, check out local bands, etc. please drop me an email
at:
thanks,
Shawn

Just came across a web site devoted to buying prog music online. Pendragon USA. Some of their entries look pretty interesting and promising...but I was wondering if anyone had any idea about the speed and reliability with which they handle their orders...their reputation, etc... If you want to take a look at their USA site, it's:

Anyone with any ideas?

Well, just heard YOM. DEFINATELY better than YNM. The chorus doesn't have that "way too poppy" feel. The little keys interlude at about 3:00 was cool too. However, it still doesn't solve my biggest problem with this song: THE LYRICS!!! I can't stand the lyrics to this song. They're cheesy, they rhyme just for the sake of rhyming. Maybe it's just me, but as a poet I would NEVER use a line like "watching you (them) run is making me lazy" or "it's alright, I'm okay, it happens every single day". So my question is this: Did this song have other lyrics in the first place? I know Desmond is the one who changed the music from the You Or Me version to the version on FII, did he originally write the lyrics or were there lyrics before he got his hand on it? ========================================================================

I vote we create a FAQ council, of 100 people... and then we can make the Unabridged, Exhaustive, Concordance of Dream Theater Bullshit. We can keep track of what Portnoy's crap color is everyday. We will tabulate, and create, and maintain a higly parallel Oracle database connected to the web, with large enterprise wide web servers using highly scaleable clustering machines with large RAID arrays and a huge optical jukebox for backup. We will then allow people to create addendums to the UECDTBS using a highly complex cgi that will not only automatically catagorize their entries, but actually do a lexical analysis to see if their addition is already in our massive database, and hence filter out even more crap. We will call this new, worldwide consortium DreamNIC. Anyone who puts up a Dream Theater related web page will have to register it with us, and pay a $50 one time registration fee and pay a $150 maintenance fee every year after the first year. Anyone who wants to start a CD-R project or tribute project will have to pay us the same fee. Soon we will take over all record companies, and they can only release CD's if they are registered to us. Not only that, from now on, we will charge you to join the YTSEJAM mailing list, to support our massive database and DreamNIC. Then we will be the voice of all judgement for the entire music industry and internet.

Dave Mulloy (the man behind Pendragon USA), is TOTALLY reliable. In fact, he often sends out orders (to his regular customers) before their checks are even in the mail. I haven't encountered anyone that has ever had any trouble with his service.
Btw, Dave is also the publisher of THE DOORWAY, The Official Spock's Beard Appreciation Society Newsletter... you can order that from his website too. :o)

I just got a CRIMSON GLORY bootleg video in the mail. It is from Holland 1989 from the Trancedence tour. It kicks ass. They played in a little club. The quality is grainy because I think it has been transformed from the PAL system. But whoever filmed it sat in the back on a tripod, so he gets all the good shots. It is awesome seeing the songs off the first two albums (I don't like 'Strange and Beautiful'). Valhalla, Azrael, Lady of Winter, Lost Reflection, are all on there. Midnight live kicks a lot of ass. How does a guy sing like that?
I just saw the official release date for the FATES WARNING video. If I remember correctly, it is March 23, the same date as the new MAIDEN album.
I am also looking for anybody or anyplace that has EMPEROR bootleg videos? (they are not for me)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VIRUS WARNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know when you're reading a jam, and all the sudden after someone's post, you see a bunch of random characters for a few screens of text? Most people don't know it, but it is actually an elaborately encoded virus that is automatically spread by email clients.
The way it works is this: -The virus arrives in the form of email, but while your email client (Eudora, Netscape Mail, etc...) is reading it, it sends encoded signals to your processor. -When your processor recieves the instructions hidden in this seemingly random text, it automatically modifies the executable file for your email client, and if you are using Win95 or NT, it adds hidden entries to your registry. -From that point on, any email message you send contains the same hidden instructions, thereby infecting anyone you email.
The Good: -For unknown reasons, he virus does not affect Windows 95 OSR 1, or Macintosh System 7.5.3 -In most cases, if you find you have the virus, reinstalling your email client will eliminate the virus. If you are unsure whether you have the virus or not, send a test message to yourself and check it for the telltale text. -Early Betas of Windows 98 and WindowsNT 5.0 were suseptable to the virus, but all versions after build 1650a have been purged. -The virus cannot be spread by Floppy disk.
The Bad: -In Windows 95 A, Windows 95 OSR 2.x, Windows 95 OSR 3.0, and Windows NT 4.0, reinstalling your email client will not elimiate the virus. In these cases, you need to do a case sensitive search of your registry for 'irivEMIM' ('MIMEviri' backards, very clever) and delete all occurances. -If you have problems removing the virus yourself, you can download F-MIME (from the makers of F-PROT Virus Protector) from http://www.shareware.com/ -At this point, the virus appears to affect *all* email clients with the exception of Pine 3.95 on UNIX based system.
The Ugly: -Once this virus embeds itself in your email program, it begins using your Internet connection against you. Anytime you are online, it will upload files from your computer -- including personal email message -- to one of 14 servers in the Phillipines. -This virus also provides a backdoor to your computer for the people that wrote it. It allows them to scan the internet for people affected by the virus, and using an encoded hexidecimal passcode, allows them to remotely control the affected user's computer. -This control is limited, but it *does* allow them to: --Send email using the person's email account. This might seem insignifigant, but imageine if the Secret Service gets a presidential death threat from YOUR email account! --Rename and copy files. Again, this seems minor, but what if you are looking for a document and someone renamed it to some obscure name! You may never be able to find it! Also, if they copy files to different locations, you could very quickly run out of disk space! --It does NOT allow deletion of files, but if the person knows what they are doing, renaming and copying could be just as harmful!
Prevention: So far, I have only talked about what to do if you have the virus, but there is a very simple method of *avoiding* the virus altogether. If you get unsolicited email from *anyone* you don't know, delete it immediately. Also, if you read an email message from a friend or from someone on the jam and it contains the virus, *immediately* hold down ALT and press the F4 key, it is the only way to 'trap' the encoded instructions before they reach your computer's processor. Delete the affected message, and then restart your email program. Send yourself a test message, and after you have checked to make sure you don't have the virus, email the person who sent it to you and warn them of the danger.
This is just scratching the surface. Much more information can be found online at:
http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/mimeviri.html
Please remember, the only way to stop the spread of this deadly virus is to stay alert and take immediate action when you see the early warning signs. You never know who may have the virus.

much thanks to those who sent me a copy of the missing jam. thanks to you all boys, girls, and otherwises.
first off- ms. elzinga: your little date with the "fabulous progger" was quite an accomplishment. i'm only saying this because the guy's brother-in-law is in thought industry. that made me smile. if he's worth the trouble, i hope you keep him shackled to your dungeon walls. and in between breaks, maybe you should check out ti, too. they're worth it.
next- i haven't read with great care the talk about the korg trinity rack. it sounds like a lovely idea, but isn't something missing when you buy the rack version of the trinity- there's no ribbon control (or whatever it's called). don't get me wrong, it's probably great regardless of what format it's in, but i guess unless you have a kurzweill k2500 with the ribbon control, it don't make a difference.
on kevin moore getting signed- ya-fucking hooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone will be scouring many a record store in the east village come release date.
on satriani's new album- he lives?
now, the "heart of the sunrise", or perhaps debate. this yes talk. first, i'd like to address master damon. and actually, mr. chew, too. you both were singing the praises of "mind drive"

wow. strong remarks. best since "awaken"? best "post 90125" song? you guys made me go back and listen to it again. such strong comments over a song made me think that maybe i was missing something here.
this is why i still can't dig that tune. i'll address this using "close to the edge" as a reference, since damon mentioned it (i did, too, but that's besides the point).
simply put- it lacks the glue. da fuckin' glue. a song like "edge" is perhaps THE classic yes long-song. why? well- there's a strong central theme to the song. there are some melodies on the song, but those melodies are MEMORABLE (go on, i know you can sing the chorus right this moment, for instance). what helps make them so memorable is that their used often. repition is a good thing (see also "heart of the sunrise" and "revealing science"). i mean, there's a whole bunch of other things that makes "edge" a great tune- but you have your own reasons for liking it- i'll spare you mine.
with "mind drive", although it's not a bad song, it seems like it's all over the place. yes, steve, there are some nice melodies in there. but there's a whole lot going on. in "edge", you can safely argue that there is one (maybe two) central musical themes going on. i don't think we can argue the same for this song.
am i criticizing the song because it didn't follow a A-B-A-B format? no. but- on the other hand, i believe it's very hard to successfully maintain a listener's interest in an 18 minute song that doesn't have a central musical point. listening to the song, i keep guessing at where things are going. it's one thing to be surprised with musical direction, but it's another thing to dial 911 in an emergency and get ernie's pizzeria. it's what i call "musical blue-balls" to expound one theme, and just leave it, and return to it 15 minutes later. that's what "mind drive" did to me.
and yes, certain parts of the song do get repeated. from my p.o.v., it wasn't the parts i thought would be repeated. but then again, repitition isn't my business- THEY wrote the song, after all. they're entitled to repeat whatever they please.
but that's why i don't dig the tune. maybe i'm missing something huge. damon? steve? anyone? i dunno. but there ya go....
and no, i don't want either of you guys to get the impression that i think you're penile implants for liking the song. i'll find better reasons to refer to you as such. ;-)
