I've been looking into expanding my prog library...and while I know about bands such as Spock's Beard, Symphony X, Enchant, etc... I've also heard a little bit about a band named "IQ." I heard that they have a really talented keyboardist, and their latest release is a 2CD concept album. Can anyone recommend them to me? What's their sound like? If anyone can help me out with this, it'd be much appreciated.

First of all it wasn't a hoax, it was sarcasm, there is a difference. Secondly, if someone is capable of screwing up their Registry using a simple *search* for a key that does not exist in the first place, then they are going to find another way to screw up their computer with or without my help.

You forget that Mosh is The Web Guru. He'll have a Dual Pentium II 450Mhz system with a camera and an ISDN connection uploading pics to the Web Page section of the UECDTBS, The Portnoy CrapCam.
About the FAQ suggestions, I was already planning a few updates, including equipment lists. I can get the recent ones without much trouble, and can possibly go as far back as I&W. As for WDaDU, I don't know if there are any lists availible. If any of you have interviews with band members where they talk about their setups, please email me.
Keep the ideas coming.

Seriously, I don't do the dance of the superlatives anymore, but I just don't see TKOS being moved off my unordered list of '98 though. Depending on release dates for other things, 'Rinx could have my list before summer!
Mike, I vote that you make this years list a top 10 list. There's just too much good stuff coming out. I don't like having to exclude something I find as good as something else. Perhaps bumping it up to 10 would make it less painful :)

Here's my input on the latest FAQ debates (since I am somewhat of an expert on the subject):
Gripe and complain and bitch about the FAQ as much as you want. When it comes down to it, Pat is going to include what he thinks belongs there and exclude what he thinks belongs elsewhere. Tough shit, deal with it. It's not a democracy.
Send seedlings of ideas to the list, let people discuss them. Send well-formulated ideas to Pat <gabbo@dreamt.org> so he can decide if and how they fit into the FAQ.
And, after he's made a couple of revisions, send him your compliments. FAQ maintainers don't get even remotely as much mail complimenting their work as they do criticizing it. :-/

Hey there folks. Just wanted to take a sec and introduce myself. My name is Chris Horvath, and I consider myself a rabid DT fan. I have also listened to a few other prog groups, such as King's X, Savatage, (used to be a BIG Queensryche fan before Hear in the Now Frontier), Rush, and a few others. I also love the primal energy behind many forms of music, such as classical, techno, industrial, and REAL heavy metal (Pantera, older Metallica, etc).
Anyways, the main reason that I am writing the jam is because I have recently moved to the Chicago area and would love to hook up with a band. I just moved here from Toledo, Oh, where I was the lead singer for a Prog garage band called Silent Masses. I would love to hook up with another group of musicians with similar interests...I want to sing with a band composed of talented musicians. For the record (not so I can just toot my own horn) I have been told that my stage voice is a combination of Geoff Tate and James LaBrie (When I was first told that I sounded like my two primary influences, I about flipped). Anyways, if any of you folks could drop me a lead, via either the jam or to my email account (ellie@kwom.com) I would greatly appreciate it.
BTW, were any of you at the Milwaukee, Wisconsis DT show this last November? What a fuckin great show. Too bad Big Wreck was throwin off so much attitude that evening. I thought they did not have the talent to back up their attitude, but that's just my .02 worth...

i tend to waver a lot about FII, because some of the songs (NM, HK, LitS, ToT) are esaily among my all-time DT faves, yet some (YNM, BMS, HY) are probably my least favorite DT songs. I've come to realize that this album is one of peaks and valleys for me; good, because the peaks are wonderful and memorable, but bad in that the valleys do detract, for me, from the overall listening experience.
what i found interesting, though, in discussion with my brother last night, were the three songs from the album that they've attempted to bring to the public-at-large, YNM, BMS, and HY. Whether or not anyone agrees about liking or disliking 'em, i tend to think most would agree that these are the most commercial tracks on the album. i personally have trouble being interested enough in any of those three to care much about 'em, but that's me. Also, some people have disputed about whether DT actually really wanted those tracks to be what they are, or whether they were under label pressure to produce commercial stuff. again, a worthwhile discussion, but not the focus of this post.
i simply wonder, if they had their druthers, if they would have released a more "signature" song, whether it be an edit of NM or LitS, or "It's Raining" from ToT, or JLMB, or something like that. i mean, i know the theory is that DT needs to release the more commercial stuff to get airplay. the problem, though, is that the public is being presented with a picture of the band that really isn't very legit (much like ryche with SL, or Extreme with "more than words"). another problem is that, frankly, DT is simply not bon jovi, or whatever, and what they do best is right heavy prog stuff. i mean, let's face it, i would say a large number of progressive music fans are impressed by NM, Met1, LtL, Voices, ToT, ACoS, etc. by comparison, a very small percentage of pop fans give a rat's ass about HY, say, or YNM.
so what i'm saying, i guess, is that i tend to think (or maybe just idealistically and unreasonably wish) that DT would do better to make available to the public their best stuff. there aren't a lot of DT fans that would listen to YNM over NM, whether you like YNM or not. i know a song-length is a huge issue, and top-40 and rock stations are hopelessly skewed towards commerciality, but i suppose it just bothers me that DT isn't putting their best foot forward.
i mean, right now, they're playing the odds, hoping that their most commercial stuff is leached onto by commercial folks. but if it doesn't work out that way, i would hate for them to have to look back and say, well, we released the commercial stuff, but our best stuff, the cream-of-the-crop songs, never got a chance.
just some ideas to chew on, spark some discussion outside of the damn FAQ, honorable bootlegging business practices, and virus hoaxes.
and while i mentioned honorable bootlegging practices, does uncle jessie's old moonshine business down in hazzard county count as one?

Funny thing. A really good friend of mine is a drummer as well (I actually bought my first set from him) and he is a devout Paiste lover. He and I can litterally spend HOURS arguing back and forth about the relative merits of Sabian and Paiste. Sometimes it gets pretty vicious. In defense of Paiste, he throws Tommy Lee (my all-time fav.) in my face. Of course this friend is also the one that got me into DT so I also throw MP right back at him. That usually shuts him up pretty quickly. Just thought I'd share.....
