Someone mentioned Cairo and I had to speak up. I just got their new
album, "Conflict and Dreams", which is prog monster. Although I prefer
their self-titled debut more due to better songs and cleaner production,
their new one is really good. More organ and ELP influence + the band
just goes over the top on a couple of tracks. Sorry to say less grand
piano on this one, but what can you do. Take the time.

I think I could solve your problems; I downloaded some mp3s and they sounded like shit. I talked to someone else on my floor and he said he used a program called phix to "phix" the mp3s. I used it and they were repaired. Although there were a couple that I could not repair, but this program did fix the ones that uncook did not help.

Also, when I try to make .wav files with Audiograbber they sound like shit and I can't convert them to mp3s, because the sound won't improve any. Could anyone help me out here?

My first post...please be gentle. This post is WAY overdue. At the Fates Warning show in Weymouth MA, on Dec.11th, I met a fellow 'Jammer who gave me a CD of his band "Mystic Fishook". He asked me to post something if I liked it. Well, I like it very much! (sorry I took so long, Matt :) "Electric Skies" is an 8 track, 31 minute EP from a very talented band. I'd call them progressive rock/light metal (If there is such a tag). Great use of keys, and time changes. There are even 2 instrumentals on the disc. Overall, a great pro-quality sounding disc. I even saw it at my local Newbury Comics. BTW, Fates were awesome! Matt, e-mail me if you read this. Sorry for the lack of DTC!

Sometimes life is good. Last week I took delivery of my new company car (Volvo V40) and it's got a CD changer in it - lucky me. And in 18 days I'm off for a 16 day diving safari in the Maldives - lucky me again. But before I go, here are some more reviews that may be of interest to some of you.
LIV KRISTINE - 3 AM
This mini CD contains a couple of tracks from Liv Kristine's forthcoming solo album "Deus Ex Machina", and on the basis of this offering, my copy has already been ordered. Liv (the female singer from Theatre Of Tragedy) teams up with Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost for the title track 3 AM, and they produce something that is very different from what their respective bands normally play. Clear and clean vocals, only minimal gothic influences and a nice pleasing song (available as club mix and single edit). More interesting and even further away from the music of Theatre Of Tragedy is the track "Good vibes, bad vibes (dance on the ocean)". The song starts with Liv's voice being sampled singing a very simple melody, and then more and more layers are put on top - keyboards, samplers and drum machines. Does the expression techno-goth exist? This song reminds me in some ways of the last album by Waltari, but it isn't as 'loud' and aggressive. I'm certainly looking forward to getting the full album, and I'll reserve my opinion until I get it.
XYTRAS - Passage
Xytras is the keyboarder/drummer/drum machine tech for the Swiss black metal band Samael. He also does the writing. Samael's last album 'Passage' is one of my favourite albums of the last couple of years, and Xytras has in effect re-written the whole album for just piano and synths. No guitars, no drums or drum machine, no vocals. I was a bit dubious at first, but after listening to the versions of 'Silent Kingdom' and 'Jupiterian Vibe' I was convinced that he had done something very good. The music is almost classical in feeling, with no traces of the aggresion and brooding darkness that are the trademarks of Samael. Also, facets of the songs become apparent that you hadn't heard before. A most interesting and relaxing album. The reworking is much more extreme than what Rage did with their old songs on the 'Lingua Mortis' album (but still a good tip). Perhaps this album might convince some of you that black metal isn't just screaming and a wall of noise. 9/10.
DEARLY BEHEADED - Chamber Of One
No, Dearly Beheaded isn't a term of endearment used by King Henry the Eighth for two of his wives. Dearly Beheaded is an English band that proves there is still some life in the English metal scene and that everything doesn't have to sound like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. 'Chamber Of One' is their second album and is overall an improvement on their debut 'Temptation'. Again produced by Colin Richardson (Napalm Death, Carcass), this album doesn't mess around and goes straight for the jugular vein with full power no-compromise 90s thrash metal. Hard, heavy, brutal, aggressive, fast, riffs galore and lashings of double bass. Fits in somewhere between Pantera and Machine Head, and an ideal pick-me-up first thing in the morning. For fans of this genre it can only be 10/10.
