Just to let you know that JM uses 6-string basses almost exclusively
nowadays, and has for a while. In WDADU, he's pictured with a 4-string
MM Stingray, and there's a short clip of him playing what looks like a
warwick thumb or dolphin in the LiT video, but that's all I'm aware of.

Okay, here's my overview of MIDI on the PC

    First off: Interfaces

You don't need both a card and anexternal rack module. THey'll do the same
thing. A card will be cheaper, but won't offer stand-alone functionality
and often some of the patch-bay capabilities (see below)

A rackmount will usually hook up to one of the serial ports of your PC and
they can offer anywhere from 2x2 up to 8x8 (in ports x out ports) and some
    offer daidy chaining for up to 16 x 16. I have the Opcode Studio64x (4 x
    4) unit. I'd recommend staying away from Opcode. Their PC support is
lacking and their tech support is staffed by trained baboons. I've been
werstling with them over mysterious failures with my 64x for 6 months, and
it finally turns out that if I turn off one check box in the setup program
my problem disappears. Now, could they tell me this? No. I had to figure
    itout myself.

As for other brands, Mark of the Unicorn makes a variety of interfaces, but
like Opcode they are a Mac-primary company and so you'd wonder about their
long-term viability and the quality of their PC drivers and support.
Emagic makes an interface, but I hear it only works with their software.
Those are the big guns for MIDI hardware. Not too great, but I'd probably
recommend checking out one of the MOTU boxes. After all, even 4x4 is 64
MIDI channels, and that's enough for most pro-level work.

Patchbay: The rackmount modules allow for some nice patchbay-like
qualities. Things like: "Take the input from port one, and send it out to
ports two and four, and add 3 to the Midi channel for port 4." Good for a
live setting, as you can route your controllers to your sound modules and
layer them and get things set up nicely. The patchbay on the 64x is failry
primitive, but some of the others may offer more (such as realtime changing
    of notes or controller info)

    Next: Software

Big question: How much do you like time sig changes? There's only one
sequencer for the PC that handles them well, and that's Vision (by Opcode.
See why I stick with them?) Of course, the program itself is hideously
old, and is still a 16-bit application (read: crashes more and no nice
features of Win95) All the others treat Meter changes as global info, so
if you decide to extend a part early on in your song, you have to manually
move all of your meter changes every time you do so. Yuck-O-Rama and more
pain than it;s worth. Vision lets you assign Meter changes as local to a
sub-sequence, so when you build a song you can just change your
subsequences, re-paste them into your song arrangement and the meters will
    still be correct.

Vision does not have Digital Audio for Windows, and possibly never will.
The program's been out for 2 years and we've only had one bug fix update
    in that time.

Other contenders if you don't need lots of meter changes: Logic (Emagic)
-- really cool sequencing package. Has any sort of live patchbay filters
you'd want in the program. This means you'll have to have the computer
running in a live setting, but imagine being able to map your sustain pedal
to a kick drum hit, so you can tap out bass drum patterns. You can do it
in Logic. Originally for Atari, now pretty-much cross-platform Mac/Windows
with only a slight Mac bias.

Cubase (Steinberg): Another Atari convert, Cubase offers Digital audio
with the PC soundcard for easy integration. Pretty neat. Like Logic,
claims to be "object-Oriented" -- that means that you can shove a bunch of
motes into an object and drag and copy them around as a unit. Nice, but if
they only could put meters in there I'd be happy.

CakeWalk (Twelve-Tone Systems) The only PC-Native contender in Pro-level
sequencing. Has digital audio through a Sound card (or better, of course)
but is pretty much a basic track-based sequencer. Probably the only one to
support the most of the Win32 API. The others have custom windows for
    "cross-platform" look and feel unity.

I think that covers most of the questions. As you might tell, I've dealt
with MIDI software for a long time. (About 10 years now)

Bottom Line: The PC market is still hurting in the MIDI area. The next
few years should be a weeding out time as the Mac gasps its last and
developers are forced to switch or die. If you rmain concern is to get
music with lots of meter changes out RIGHT NOW and you can afford to more
or less dedicate a machine to running your MIDI program (as I am) You might
want to look at Vision, but I'd stay away from Opcode's interfaces, and
probably look atht eMOTU ones (I was tempted to jump until I got mine
working) -- if you want digital Audio RIGHT NOW and cross-platform
capabilities, go for Cubase. If you want Digital Audio and the security of
knowing that the program was designed from the ground up for the PC, go
with Cakewalk. If you want some of the neatest real-time controls and some
cool whiz-bang features, take a look at Logic.

All of the programs have starter versions as well, and all that I've
mentioned have a downloadable demo of at least one of their products for
the PC. You can't save, but you can take a look at the interface and see
    what you like.

I finally got around to downloading Winamp, and the five MP3's that I could
find(Tears, CME, STM, TLF, and the MITheme), all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!
Can someone please tell me if MP3's exist for Raise the Knife, Where Are You
Now, and any other unreleased/rare DT. I saw the RealAudio files on Dr. Mosh,
but who wants RealAudio now? I've never been impressed with the sound quality
    myself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My hopes are getting rejuvenated by these people recieving the '97 DTIFC CD.
I sent my check in Nov. '97, so maybe there is still a chance. PLEEEEEEEEASE!

    OK it's fun time!!

    1. My line is back as of tomorrow (Monday) morning. They finished the
groundwork on it Friday, and it gets turned on at 6am Monday. I will
gradually attack the huge mass of e-mail sitting in my inbox.

    2. Prism Records web page will be extensively updated Monday, to include
a full tracklisting to the soundboard DT 2-CD FII tour boot, which has
been renamed from Welcome to the Wasteland to "Stream of Consciousness"
which seemed a much better fit, and cover art changed. Don't worry if
you used WTTW on your order form, I know which boot you meant. :)

    3. PT and TDOW are shipping near current at this point. I'm into the
Virtual Songs backlog at this time while keeping new stuff as current as
I can. Stream of Consciousness will ship *ahead* of schedule. Oh what a
    landmark day...

    4. CD-RW and CD-R drives: As long as you get a SCSI drive, either one is
OK. Don't be suckered into buying an EIDE/ATAPI drive. The nightmares
will literally never end for you. To get a proper system for reliably
making CDs, you need a SCSI CDR drive (or CDRW) and a SCSI CD-ROM drive,
one that supports extraction at 687k/s or better (most Sony and Teac 4x
or better drives do this). Plus you will avoid a lot of headaches if you
use an Adaptec UW-2940 PCI SCSI card or have it on your motherboard
already. Once you have that, go to town.

    5. The Wedding Singer is one hell of a funny movie!

    6. I know DT has mentioned a summer tour of the States. Does anyone know
anything more about this? Has there been any official announcement about
it? I sure do hope they don't skip this entire state again.

    7. Damn, the USA sucks at winter sports! Look at those Norwegians and
Dutch and Germans... they rock! They get all the good medals!! :) At
least we're getting SOME medals, but only a *few*. Anyone see that guy
go flying off the course on the men's downhill? That was one spectacular
wipeout! That guy's claim to fame, more so than if he had medaled! :)

    8. Does anyone else here like to read the Dutch DT fanzine "Theater of
Dreams" even though we don't speak Dutch, but because we can "kind of"
understand what we're reading, and the mag looks so awesome? Every time
I get a new TOD issue in the mail, it's like Christmas! And seeing PT
reviewed in the last one, reminds me that I need to send them their
    Mosaics they ordered eventually! :)

    9. I think Dream Theater should do instrumental takes on the themes from
video games like Metroid, Zelda, and Faxanadu. Just my opinion. Hell,
since you can capture their sound as WAV or MIDI with the emulators, I'm
thinking of just changing the wavetable instruments to make them sound
as much like DT as possible.

    10. Have fun everyone, and don't let the winter freeze ya!! El Nino has
    arrived!!

hey Jammers. I've got a problem. The damn FC address change caused me not to get in a membership subscription in time to get the 97 X-mas cd! :< My freaking check got returned to me ! First of all, NO THAT IS NOT THE ONLY REASON FOR MY INTEREST IN THE FC ! I only found out about it at the end of 97 and I sent my request and check in as soon as I did. I've twice contacted Neil Elliot about this and he was very nice and prompt to reply, but......<in my words>....TOUGH SHIT ! :P` With that said, does ANYone out there in YTSELAND have one or both of these CD's that they *might* not want ? I know that this is a long shot, to say the least, but I'm going crazy and I heard several people bitching about the 97 X-CD's content or lack of, on the JAM and I figure if you hate it so and are SOOOO disatisfied with it after all that waiting...why not turn it into a profit !! Hell, it WAS FREE !! All profit from it's sale !! Let me know (Privately please) Zildjian -tis better to be quiet and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt !! ;)

Actually JP uses a standard tuning 6 string on all 3 of these songs. The riffs are played in a way that would make you think that they are in drop D, but are really standard. In a normal "metal" 5th chord, there is usually the root, the fifth, and then the octave of the root. JP doesn't use the root for the beginning of BMS, and what is left over is still a fifth. When the verse kicks in, he uses the root because that is an E and doesn't require any weird tuning. As for JM, he pretty much always plays a 6-sting (when he's not using a STICK). The 7-sting songs on FII are NM and JLMB. I think that's all. Hope this clears it up.

This was sold about an hour or two after I posted it, to the very first e-mailer. I'd just to say that I WAS NOT BRIBED! Yes, he did offer an additional CDR, but I did not ask for it, and either way he was still the first bidder. I told him I would sell it him and got my response before I had gotten any other e-mail on this subject. My friend Jeff accused me of being crooked about being bribed even though he didn't know the whole story (I hate it when people jump to conclusions and accuse). Anyway there is a good chance this store will get some copies, and if I see any, I'll post about it and sell to the first bidder, as usual. Sorry for my rant, but I don't like being accused of things that aren't true.

Well, I think that it exists. At least, I just downloaded a lot of stuff from it this weekend. And how much bullshit. :-)

Oh, BTW, have you seen the results to the poll of Progressive Music of 1997?? They results were just divulged and there was a massive number of people voting for Marillion.

Oh #2, Dream Theater also won one of the categories. :-)

    Hey,

I just happened across their web site today and liked the sound clips I heard (I only listened to those from the last two albums). I've seen them mentioned here before, but is there some general consensus regarding them? The singer mixed it up a lot (as did the whole band) but at times he sounded REALLY Germanic - overly in-your-face, that kind of thing (Ivanhoe comes to mind).

Are they worth checking out? Email me privately if you want.
