I got my Dream Theater Xmas CD today in the mail. It is excellent. I was one of those people who sent in a check in early Oct, and never got my CD until just now.

To the Guys In Dream Theater and the people at the International Fan Club - THANKS A LOT. This CD is really cool.

And to anyone who underestimates how good Derek is, you gotta hear the track called 'Derek Noodling at the Keyboard' It has Derek playing some classical stuff, Elton John and a bunch of stuff in between it is really good. Maybe I will make an MP3 of this track. (Question to any keyboardist that has the 'Steinway to Heaven' CD - Does Derek play part of 'Ginasteras Dance Creole' played by Keith Emerson on that album???)

Also, I have placed a listing of all my Dream Theater CD's, Bootlegs, CD-singles, Videos, etc... on my web page at http://w3.nai.net/~mpomerle/DT/DT-boots. If you would like to trade, please check out my site, and e-mail me.

Also, I have found an interesting interview with John Petrucci at http://www.prime-choice.com/interviews/dreamtheater.htm. The Interview looks old - but I don't remember seeing it here on the YTSEJAM before.

For all the tablature I have seen on the net for these songs, no-one yet realises that they are all played in dropped D tuning!!! (IMO). I can't see any other way JP could have got those low notes for BMS (I read somewhere that the only song on FII he used a 7-string for was NM). JM could have tuned to dropped D as well, or as I saw somewhere, could have used a 5-string bass. Also, the ending chord to HK is a Dsus4, which only sounds correct (using all strings) if the 6th string is tuned to a D. Obviously I've never been to a DT concert so I wouldn't know how they're played, but it just seems correct to me. Hurry up and tour Australia, DT!!!! It's also sad to see that (AFAIK) DT have had no Aussie airplay! BTW, is there anyone in OZ who wants to sell an Ibanez RG7520? (7-string electric) Has anyone noticed that at the end of LFAGA (WDADU), there is riff that sounds remarkably similar to the end of LTL (I&W)? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shane Woolcock - woolcock@pl.camtech.net.au WWW - http://rampage.ml.org/sector1/~samah/ "Still awake, I continue to move along, Cultivating my own nonsense" - DT ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a rather long email, so I will actually give a quick index here:

    1. FII w/ 2 bonus tracks 2. Request for new Dream Theater Web Page 3. Jam tapes to WDADU, IAW, and Awake 4. Convert MIDI files from one format to another 5. Need feedback on Computer MIDI setup 6. Sansamp PSA-1 vs. Roctron Voodoo Valve Online 7. Need feedback on CD-R

-------------------------------------- 1. FII w/ 2 bonus tracks Who was the person that was offering to buy this and send it out to YTSE Jammers if they sent him the money to cover? I don't have that email anymore, but I am very interested. Please email me at calvin6s@aol.com. thanks!!!

-------------------------------------- 2. Request for new Dream Theater Web Page I've only been on the web for less than my FREE 50 AOL hours, so I don't want to work on a web page myself - HOWEVER: If anyone who maintains a Dream Theater Web Page is listening - Please add a "Trading Amp and Effect settings" text download page. And if they have ties to DT, start with John Petrucci's settings!!!! Kind of similar to the Rocktron online page, but not as advanced and more tailored to YTSE Jammers. That way I will never have to worry about wading through patches called "Cobain's Suicidal Tone" (I know - sick humor. Sorry couldn't resist). If you know of sites like this that already exist, let me know at calvin6s@aol.com

-------------------------------------- 3. Jam tapes to WDADU, IAW, and Awake

I received very minimal response on these, so I will probably hold off on these until I move a month from now. I would love to just upload the MIDI files, but I transcribed these songs on my old computer - an Amiga. I also used uncommon settings, so my Drum Kick MIDI note may be your cowbell (see the problems). These problems exist because I never intended to do anything but Jam to them personally. It's too bad, because you should hear how much work I put into them. I'm talking dynamic hits and my Keyboard rendition of the 6:00 solo is great (actual keyboard players would probably disagree). I live in Orange, CA (currently) so if there are any locals, maybe we can work something out. Who knows, if they stop by and get a sample, maybe they'll give it a great review on the YTSE Jammers line and more interest will be generated for larger production. Drop me any questions at calvin6s@aol.com

-------------------------------------- 4. Convert MIDI files from one format to another

As hinted at in the above email, I want to convert my Amiga (Music X) files to a new IBM Compatible (program = ?). Has anybody used an Amiga computer before and made a successful conversion. Remember these are Dream Theater MIDI files. Very complex tempo and time signature changes, Pitch bends, inflections and more. I don't want to lose this attention to detail, but I sure don't want to start from scratch!!! And I don't want to leave them on the Amiga (now collecting dust). Any help on this is appreciated. Perhaps you need a program format, but part 5 refers to this. Once again calvin6s@aol.com

-------------------------------------- 5. Need feedback on Computer MIDI setup

As hinted at in the above section, I want to start up a MIDI set up for my IBM compatible. I would like to do it in stages. The first is buying a card to handle the MIDI connection (any suggestions). Also, a MIDI rack mount unit to run multiple MIDI channels (16 x ?). Also, a program that handles: Patch editors for my rack modules, Real time MIDI control for Patch and possibly house light switching, Notation (including Guitar Tab), and multiple MIDI tracks in both standard notation and graphic (the old box time line which seems to offer more control). This must be upgradeable for the second step - Digital Recording that can be save on a Storage Medium other than my hard drive. Any suggestions? Send to calvin6s@aol.com

-------------------------------------- 6. Sansamp PSA-1 vs. Rocktron Voodoo Valve Online

I also want to record guitar direct (My Mesa Dual Rectifier is just too loud. AND when I stick that piece of crap Shure SM-57 mic in front of it, the tone goes from Godly to Marshall (just messin with ya).

I've heard the Sansamp PSA-1, and although it is by no means a Mesa Dual Rectifier, it sounds useable for demo recording. I'm also interested in the Rocktron Voodoo Valve Online because Rocktron seems to have their eye on the future (and I get effects). This has a speaker simulator. Does it sound as good as a Sansamp PSA-1? Better? Perhaps you have this Rocktron with your own direct recording patch that sounds like Pantera / Petrucci on "The Mirror". Then give it to me so I can test it out!

Any input on this, please send to calvin6s@aol.com

    -------------------------------------- 8. Need feedback on CD-R

Also thinking about a CD-ReWriteable to store data, audio, and Digital Recordings on. Any suggestions? Can a CD-ReWriteable use standard CD-R's (1x) for the purpose of simple archiving so I can save money when I just need to record once? Is there such a thing as one that does Audio and Data or do I need to buy these separate? Please send any comments to calvin6s@aol.com

------------------------------------ Well, there it is. Sorry if this email was huge, but I just need to do so many things right now and I trust the word of YTSE jammers more than the other people out there on the Internet.

A friend of mine told me (I still don't have the XCD, so, I don't know) that Derek is playing excerpts from ex-Yes keyboardist's, Rick Wakeman, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", which is also present on the live record "Yessongs".

Yes, CD-RW drives can record both CD-R and CD-RW discs. CD-R discs *WILL* play perfectly on every CD player and CD-RW discs will play only on CD/CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RW players which support a thing called "Multiread".

Every computer CD-R/CD-RW writer that I know writes both audio and data and, so, you won't need two separate writers. But there are standalone drives that record only audio, I think.

    Hope this helps, Roger...

are there some magic words someone might accidentally say to stop the compilation of a digest? about 1/7 of my digests have arrived with only the first half... my only guess is that someone's put a keyword or something as the first word on the line. It's like that on Echoes (pink floyd list) where you can't say From (spelled like that) as the first word on a line. so could this be the problem? if so, some more people ought to know about it. if it's just me who has this problem, nevermind.

This is for all of you jammers looking for TAB books, especially the one looking for the TAB book for Vai's "Alien Love Secrets". Check out the site at http://www.charm.net/~guitar/ . They've got a boatload of tab books there including the 2 DT TAB books and the Fates Warning book. However, I haven't had the money to order anything from them so I don't have a definite answer about their reliability. This is a good place to start though. Happy jamming!

Yes and yes. The book has been out for a long time now, and the Video came out a short while after the album. I can't comment on the book's accuracy, because I've never opened it up (though I have seen it in stores). The video is immensely cool, but it's sort of like a Milli Vanilli concert... you're seeing them pretend to perform live, but you hear the album cuts. Different drummer and if I remember correctly, different bassist than on the album as well. The cool thing is that they go really close up on Vai when he's soloing, and it helps out a lot when you want to learn a solo, if you have video to accurately display what's going on. The video should be available at Tower Records.

Someone named "lao" is offering the DT Atlanta show at the Masquerade on two CD-R's for $35. Has anyone dealt with this individual before, or gotten these CDr's? It's supposedly a DAT copy, but I have no idea from what source/generation it is, or overall quality, and I'd rather deal with someone who asks for either cash or money orders (but significantly, not checks) with a prior "good history" on the Jam.

Well Roger, and anyone else who's interested, I only saw the last minute of the video, and it was pretty late. What I do remember is a lot of street video of New York (a bit like Jimi Hendrix 'Cross town traffic') and several cuts to James singing in black and white in the dark with everyone else standing behind him frozen looking in different directions - all a bit 'posed'. So they didn't break Titanic's budget with this number. My original question: has anyone else seen it? Is it getting airplay?

Hey people, I have a question/comment about Gamma Ray. What the hell is up with Dirk playing guitar for three albums and then leaving the guitar to pick up the bass in the new album? What's the reason for that happening? Was he forced to do it or did he want to do it? Also, why does Gamma Ray change their lineup so much?

I also wanted to comment about Rhapsody's "Legendary Tales". This album is very good. To me, it sounds like a combination of Symphony X and Angra (pretty good combination, don't you think?). Very classicaly influenced. Highly recommended. Well, that's it.
