That's what I meant. Music targeted at children is usually simple music
with simple lyrics, and is generally targeted toward teaching the listener
a lesson about someting (i.e. Barney/Sesame Street). An adult will be bored
by it (generally). At the same time, Bach's music is intended for
"experienced" ears, someone who can involve themself emotionally in the
piece and appreciate the complexities of the music. In this case, a child
would be bored by it. But both are what I call "valid" because they succeed
in reaching their target audience, and serving their intended purpose.

Green Day's music would be the same. There *is* a target audience for their
music out there, whether people on this list like to admit it or not. Just
because you, me or anyone else doesn't happen to like a certain type/kind
of music, doesn't make it any less "valid", as long as an audience exists.

    >I think music should hold more meaning than what pop alternative offers.
    >It should be measured, meaningful, and passionate, not flung around like
    >monkey feces just to see what flies.

You're assuming here that your musical value hold true for everyone else.
They don't. They only really apply to you, since everyone's values and
    tastes are different.

    >In summary, just because something holds the same amount of importance to
    >a 16 year old dope smoker as something does for me doesn't mean that they
    >carry the same validity.

And conversly, if you are allowed to make a statement like that, we must
allow the 16-year old dope smoker to make the same statement about you, and
it would be just as true.

Having musical values is great. Trying to extrapolate those values out and
apply them to everyone else is *not* great.

No he can't. He can play the notes, but he can't play like Clapton. Take it from this perspective.... I can learn the lead that Coltrane plays on sax over Giant Steps, perhaps faster than it is on the recording, but that doesn't make me greater than or even equal to Coltrane. The sound is in your hands and in your mind... there's no way in HELL I can improvise like Coltrane over Steps at any reasonable tempo. I could solo over Clapton tunes, but it's not going to sound like Clapton. Yngwie can not sound like Clapton or Hendrix or any of those guys. He'd have to put years into modifying his technique and learning how to back off... he'd have to study the concepts and intervals in Claptons solos, etc... it would take a lot.

    > buyer? There are only 3 different 7 strings on that Ibanez offers right = > now. Just ordered an RG-7620 last week!!

Welcome to my nightmare. :) There are 2 Universes available, and the RG 7620, and SUPPOSEDLY you can put in orders for the archtop and the Acoustic... whether that means you'll ever get it, is another story. When the new Black Mirrored UV shows up in full force, expect to start seeing a couple Swirl 7 strings and black and green 7 strings appear in used shops.

    > releasing an album with Magna Carta. Does anyone know if and how many > albums they already have out? What are some good sources for buying > bands like this

Zero albums out right now. You can get these kinds of albums from places like www.impulsemusic.com, The Laser's Edge, Shrapnel.Magna Carta, and from independent bands' web pages (Check out http://www.spasticink.com for a paradigm example)

The original version of ACoS had a solo right out of the Malmsteen Handbook. John Petrucci learned to shred by studying Al DiMeola and Yngwie Malmsteen solos at half speed on his record player. I promise YOU that Petrucci is a more capable player than Malmsteen now. Watch his video... you'll see him doing chromatic scales in 16ths at 208BPM. Joe Stump is faster.... Yngwie is not. But more importantly, look at what they write! Petrucci over his short recording career has already danced masterfully through more complex themes and ideas, as well as styles, than Yngwie has in his almost 20 years! Plus, without sweeping, I bet Yngwie is light years behind JP at playing 1 and 2 notes per string.

    > Half of you don't deserve to be DT fans in the first place. I thought > their music was about expressing music- hasn't Yngwie Malmsteen been > doing that since 1983 or so? Fuck all you self-loving hypocrites,

That should be self-loathing. Few of us can manage enough self respect to even LIKE ourselves when we realize we've spent the past 10 minutes reading rubbish like this. Fewer still are those of us who feel ANY self worth after responding to it. I can only take solace in that I chose a superior instrument than you chose to play, and am not playing in an Yngwie cover band. Arrrrgh, me matey!

    > FUCK YOU. BTW, this is from a drummer that doesn't even play guitar but > seems to respect the instrument more than a lot of people here.

That is all the explanation I need. Another drummer who wants to explain guitar technique to me... what if I told you that "Alex Van Halen is the best drummer in the world, and can do a smoother single stroke roll than Buddy Rich, so FUCK YOU!" I'd sound like an idiot, wouldn't I? Now consider how your percussive alien lips sound to us as you spout your uninformed guitar nonsense. --------- > Unfortunately, the drummer (Atma Anur?) isn't as good at this as he would > like to be. :)

Consider also that this album was made 10 years ago. I've heard something from Atma recorded about 5 years ago, and let me tell you, he knows how to work outside of his time sigs now! ---------- > From: "woot" <woot@crypted.com>

    > >Ptacek: A simple question I hope you don't take offense to: How is that > >pronounced? > > *ahem* > > BA-FU

Hahahah! Well, there are two acceptable pronounciations of the name Ptacek. One, the correct, Slovak pronounciation is "Tah-Check". The other, more common is any variation of sounds created by horking up a big goober full of phlegm, *hkhhhaahhhgkghhhh" being the most common of these. ------------ > First of all, let's back up a second. Maybe we oughtta ask John if he'd > even want to play a Malmsteen solo.

He has. But he has nothing more to learn from Yngwie. He knows how to play Aeolian and Harmonic Minor, as well as all of his triad sweeps and diminished arpeggios.

    > I dunno about John but I'd laugh in > your face and ask you to play me a Billy McLaughlin song.

Wow, I've seen a lot of crap on the jam (I've been on since Jam 500 or so) but this shit takes the cake. I think the original "green day" post made it completely obvious that it was a sarcastic joke. So at first I just thought you were just dim-witted. But posting your address and phone number on this mailing list of over 1000 after publicly displaying your feeble intelligence is just plain ridiculous. Also, all these other messages about how "gay ass" Green Day fans are or whatever are even more depressing. I thought DT fans might be a little more open minded about all types of music and also more MATURE then the shit displayed on other mailing lists, but I guess I was wrong.

That was our first attempt at forcing our opinion on the music industry, similar to the petition that came about to get DT in the studio when they were getting jerked around about a year ago. What happened is that MP was trying to get the ACOD EP going from EastWest and they were pretty much apprehensive about the idea, so we all started a petition and I can't remember how many signatures were on it, but as small as the internet communiety was back then, I'm sure it was a substantial amount considering. Anyway, we just helped to push EastWest in the right direction. :)

I didn't know this was available yet. For those who don't know, this is supposed to be Skolnick and some other solid musicians playing Police movie/tv show themes and car-chase scene themes... should be a riot. If Skol has kept his technique together (there has ben evidence that he's slacked, but that was a while ago) this should also be insane.

    Hi

What have all you guys against Yngwie Johan Malmsteen ?

He is one the best guitar player of all time. Without him, bands like Symphony X, Stratovarius would never make the music they do these days. Yngwie has create the style you call "Neo Classical Metal".

I like all his albums. From Rising Force (1984) to Facing tht Animal (1997). It's true that sometimes his solo's sounds the same but it's not a bad thing.

Ynwie make still the best neo classical music --->>>> BACH AND ROLL.

"Fire and Ice" is an awesome album. "Perpetual" kicks ass. I think, Yngwie is a good song writer. In all his albums, you can find power (metal) songs, great ballades, incerdible intstrumental stuff or just great hard rock songs. What's wrong with that ?

I can't wait to hear his Concerto album, which promised to be 1 of the best and inovativest instrumental album of all time.

    Look :

Yngwie is arrogant but, hell he can play. He is giunus. Kirk Hammet more arrogant than Yngwie and he can NOT play. But some of you still love "ALTERNETICA" (formaly know as Metallica).
