There was supposed to be a second part to the last message I sent.
Regarding album sales. I frequently get to work in a small town near the
border between The province of Quebec and northern New-Hampsire. When I
am there, I tune in rock station WTOS 105.1 (Maine radio's problem child
is their slogan). Anyhow, last time I was over there (end of november)
Burning my Soul was playing three times a day. So, I was wondering, how
exactly are going the sales for FII if compared to, lets say, Awake and
I&W? I have absolutely no clue.

We're back, we survived; well-worth the looong drive. I'll post more
later about the show itself unless some other kind soul does (or rather,
already has :)).
Quick notes: I finally managed to get a drumstick, although not by
the usual channels.....
Bafu Vai was in da house! Great to hang out with you once again, even
if we couldn't find any vanishing restaurants this time. :)
Never did see any sign of Pat D. We looked in the pizza place, which
had quite a few DT fans in it between 6 and 6:30, but no-one wearing
any Jam shirts was in THAT house. (I wore mine so "reverse recognition"
might work.) No sign after the show by the stage, either.
Got to get autographs from James and Derek but Mike had to get on the
bus before finishing with the HUGE mob of people crammed between the
wall, the equipment truck and the auxiliary diesel power-cart. I did
get to pass a tape up to him, though. :) Shortly afterward, venue
security -- who were quite evil, for such a small club -- booted us
out of the area, saying we were trespassing. Bastards! I'll bet
they killed Kenny, too.....
Great to meet several relative newbies at the show also. Afterward
we all went to Denny's -- ten strong, would have been more if we could
have found Bafu & Co. -- for some kewl post-show fun (joining us was
the manager of Queensryche's Undernet IRC channel and her crue).
Great way to cap off the night since we NEEDED food and drink.
--Especially drink. (At the show: "$4 for Bud? We'll give you $2
for plain water!" hehe)
Hearing "The Way It Used To Be" over the PA after getting the HY
single and learning the song was almost a religious experience.
Seemed like only we few knew it, but boy was that fun. What a
stunningly excellent song!
ObSPC*: there's an exit off I-95 for a road named Southpark Boulevard
in southern Virgina -- and there's Southpark Mall right next to the
highway, too. There was no sign of sporadic fighting between Jesus or
Santa Claus, but we just HAD to stop and get some photos. --And a
Southpark lighter (not show-merchandise, either). One of the
worst-designed freeway exits and intersections I've ever seen, but it
wouldn't have been Southpark without that. :)

I&W being the exception? If DT have ever written a pop ballad, it's Another Day. YNM is a great rock song. HY is a great ballad. TAMP is, I admit, my least favourite from FII, but it definately grew on me with time. JP's solo is great, almost as good as his Another Day solo. AL is probably my favourite song from FII. I don't think DT have ever written a boring song that I can remember off-hand (which is not to say that I love everything that they have done - far from it).

I have never heard DT on the radio. I doubt I will in the forseeable future. That said, if I did hear DT on the radio I'd hope that I was wearing brown underwear because I'd near shit myself. DT are still pretty much an upcoming young band that are having trouble cracking the mainstream because of what is currently popular. Any time they are in regular rotation on the radio, or any time they get any major publicity, should be a joyous time for a band the vast majority of music fans have never heard of. Why should we, the fans, not be excited when DT get that one (small) step closer to achieving mainstream success?

I'm not sure how to phrase my response here. I don't have all that much respect for someone who joins a fan club just to get a CD. It's free - you didn't pay your money for the CD, you paid to join the fan club. If someone joined the fan club just for a CD and then they are disappointed by it, then tough shit. If you joined the fan club because you're a fan and you wanted to be kept up to date with news, etc, and you're disappointed with whatever services, etc, that the fan club offers, then you have reason to complain.
As I said, I very rarely (as far as I can remember) bitch and moan about someone, and I don't think I have *ever* flamed anyone since I joined the jam in mid 96, but if this does come across as either bitching, moaning or flaming, then so be it. I had to get it off of my chest.

DT have never ruined any album you pidgeon-toed-pee-brain, ballads break up the more 'up' tempo songs, rather than have an album full of the same style songs. None of the above songs you mentioned 'ruin' the flow of FII for me, AL is one of the highlights for me, JP's solo gives me goose bumps.

Yep couldn't agree more with you more, I won't say anymore, most know my feelings on the matter and I don't want to rehash old flames :) It's the nature of the beast I am afraid, DT fans seen to be really picky and only expect nothing less than perfection from the boys. Even if they put out a double CD with with 5 25 minute songs on it I am sure someone out there would pick holes in it :)

It's tiny and in a strip mall, with a mattress store and pizza place on either side. I felt like we were in the movie Spinal Tap: "Puppet show and Dream Theater ... I told you to put Dream Theater on top!"

First off, Woo-Hoo!!!! Last time I saw DT was at the Palace Theater in Albany NY on the 'Music in Progress' tour... It was great to see them again.
I received my Xmas disc on friday, so I was listening to that pre-show. Very cool.
First off, I thought that Big Wreck was great. I really enjoyed their performance. They are in no way a progressive band in the DT vein, but they had some great riffs. The only real thing that was even close to an annoyance was that their songs tended to be a little on the long side. They waited to long between songs and lost the crowd... Their music was cool though. I think I'll go buy the cd.
OK, so I thought Big Wreck was cool... Some guy behind me started yelling "Bafu" and I turned and smiled. I thought that was funny. :)
The LTE stuff was very cool. This was over the PA between sets. They played some unreleased stuff too. They played Raise the Knife, a song I think is called Where Are You Now??? and before Rooster, they played the B-side off the Hollow Years single called The Way It Used To Be. I really liked Where Are You Now.
I was standing right in front of JP's mike stand for the show.
So Derek runs on stage and does his intro thing. The band comes on and rages into Lines in the Sand. JLB sings Doug Pinnick's (sp???) lines from the record and MP and JP sing the other parts. Very cool.

Awesome night. Cheers to Paul, the guy in the maroon Ytsejam shirt. I got James and DS signatures and thanked them for the Xmas CD. James and I talked about the back ups on BMS where Mike was doing the "Dip Dip Dip" thing. We both got a laugh out of that.
Some guy had an Ibanez JMP100 that he was having the band sign. He bought it at a pawn shop for about $700.00. He doesn't even play... Ughhhhhh.
James mentioned that they would be playing Trial of Tears in Long Island on Sunday.

NO it isn't. That's fine if you feel that way, but many of us (myself included) think that the lyrics are just as important as the music. I bought IAW words because I liked the music I heard (PMU), but I kept listening and buying more DT because it was more than just great music, it was great music accompanied by great lyrics. I'm sure I'm not along on this.

Well, I realize that ballads just aren't some people's taste, but the ones on FII don't really bother me at all. They're all well written and don't really fall into the category of "boring pop ballads" to me. Musically, they're much more complex than the average radio ballad. Lyrically, they're much more emotional than your average "oh how I miss you and love you, please come back to me" radio-pop ballad. They deal with subjects like death & child abuse, which I don't hear on the radio daily. I think these song just add to DT's versatility and impress me that much more with the band's overall talent.

Have to agree here totally. These are very pointless posts, IMO. Even if I read one about a radio station playing DT in my area, I'm not gonna listen to it 24-7 hoping to hear some DT. I'll just put the CD in when I want to hear DT.

Ok. So you probably know that this movie ("The Piano", with Holly Hunter) got really high reviews/ratings from the critics and I simply don't know why. I just saw it (yeah, I know that I'm a little late, but... :-) ). This movie has a huuuuuge flaw, IMO, that if we could compare this movie to a computer network connected to the Internet and I were the boss of the system administrator, he would be instantaneously *FIRED*. Well, the film is not as bad as I told it is, but has some interesting points. Overall, I give it a 6 or, maybe, even 7 (out of 10). But (aha!) he has a connection with Dream Theater (and, IMO, this is the best part of the movie). If you are a "real" fan, you know this. :-) Just wanted to hear your opinions (BTW, if you're going to comment on the movie only, please send it privately and if you're going to comment on the DT connection, please send it to the 'jam, so more people can give their comments and contribute to the discussion).

Pardon me, but, IMO, it is a completely different situation, feeling when you hear songs from your favorite (or top 10 favorites, for that matter) on the radio and when you put the CD in your player.
I can't explain why (maybe I'll have to think a bit more about it), but the feeling is much stronger: you know that more people will be listening to your preferred band that moment. It is kind of a "Wohoo! I told you there were good" mixed with a strange feeling of possession (call it what you want, but feelings not always need explanation).
So, let people discuss what they want to. Otherwise, what would this mailing list be about? Do you people subscribed to a list of messages hoping to read *nothing*?? I don't understand this, and would be very pleased to know what you people think about it.
BTW, people on this list are always so worried about contributing with DTC or NDTC that, IMO, 10% of the discussions here are about "DTC or not DTC, that is the question". Just let the DT content raise naturally (of course, I'm wasting much more than 10% of my message with this discussion, but it is in the hope that we will stop with these crazy things). Please, let's stop the metadiscussions.
