well, i just woke up from slumber. it is now the day after probably one of the
wildest dt shows in their history. there some ridiculous surprises.
first of all, this goes to the assholes throwing shit at big wreck and acting
like a 10 year old thinking you're cool with "you suck" stupidity. you're an
asshole. grow the fuck up.
there. anyways, big wreck did their thing. they were pretty good. but we got a
little taste of what was to come when petrucci, portnoy and derek came out and
jammed to "voodoo chile" with the band. it was phenomenal. many a fan went
nuts.
after the break, dt hits, and they go into lines. i got really scared. i've
never heard dt play a song as slow as they did with lines. lines seemed
SOOOOOOOOOO DAMMMMMMN SLOW. i was worried that if that's how the show was to
be, i would've fallen to sleep.
luckily, i was wrong. stupid wrong.
they had a fascinating setlist. they did lie, which i was hoping to hear. they
did ynm (which i heard on the radio after show on 102.3- anyone else catch
it?), which was fascinating. let's see, they also did (in no order)...
lines
bms
voices
hollow years
the little bit of music with bits of "mirror" in it/jlmb
lie
ynm
tamp
pmu
ytsejam/millenium
..i think i got that.
now, it gets ugly. we're talking YOUR MOTHER ugly.
so they get off stage, and we're going nuts waiting for them to get back on,
and they finally do, and i hear derek playing the beginning chords to....you
know it, you love it, you can't live without it- TRIAL OF TEARS. i simply lost
it. UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE. i lost my mind in those 11 or so minutes.
it got more interesting- they go into metropolis, and they do their thing, and
do their little stop, of course, and they break into zeppelin's "rock and
roll." out comes the singer from big wreck to sing a verse of the tune. that
ends, the other guys from big wreck come out, they suck each other's cocks,
and dt finishes metropolis.
what i thought was especially touching was at the very end of metropolis (on
the last note), portnoy and johnny myung give their instruments to the
corresponding members of big wreck and THEY finish off the show.
this certainly is the best dt show i've ever seen, and i'm sure this will go
down as one of the wilder ones in their history. they were home, they were
very loose, they jammed on jimi with the opening band, got them to jam to
zeppelin, and pulled out a whole bunch of surprises.
i had a blast showing these people where the love is at- wisha, merlo and his
woman, syrinx, that mike dude, the few minutes i saw heath, ytsejim and his
friend-i-met-at-queensryche, the guy who gave HIS hat to james after lines,
and a myriad assortment of other clowns.
ok, back to sleep i go.

work with a program director of the local hard rock radio station (WAAF)

Hello all,
A few notes as I return from vacation, and to my computer...
First, a NDTC queston... can anyone point me to the Metallica e-mail
list, and let me know if it's worth my time? With all the Smashing
Pumpkins mainstream fans into them now, I'm curious... I could really
use a hand with this.
I know they've been playing the LTE stuff at the shows. I had head that
the release dats was Spring... has this changed? Anyone know the
specifics?
About the ballads... I hesitated at first in passing judgment on FII for
a while, but now I really think that the ballads help this album, they
don't detract from it. While each DT album is brilliant in its own
right, and many have their favorites, I think it's important to see what
makes each album WORK. For me, WDADU is the album of technical
intricacies galore, I&W is the opus album, Awake is the dark somber
work, and FII is the album of balance. (Obviously, I'm generalizing,
and we all might have different perspectives, but this is just one way
to look at it....) I just see the ballads as one component (of many)
that help the album work as well as it does. Taking them as individual
songs, although I do like them alone as well, is different then
acknowledging them as part of a whole, the whole
sum-greater-than-the-parts thing.

It looks like FII made it into the top 100 best selling
CDs of 1997 for CDNow! Its number 78 right behind David
Bowie and Prodigy :)
This is actually pretty good considering that the CD was
released in September. It is even better when you consider
that alot of Dream Theater listeners are fanatics and buy
the CD as soon as they can get their hands on it (i.e.
the store in the local mall, not over the internet where
you might actually have to wait! NOOOOOO!).

Heh :) I never thought of myself as famous.
> "Hey - I dont tell you how to pick up the garbage !! "
Is that what he said? I was already walking away ignoring him :)
They don't have to tell me cuz I pick it up RIGHT! James had every
right to go ballistic. It wasn't like the guy fucked up once during the
show.
And the bass was IN FACT mixed completely wrong at times. I know I can't
be the only one who heard it distorting.
Shoulda popped that fat fuck in the head :) or at least put the
megaphone up in front of his face, and scream TURN THE MICROHPHONE
VOLUME UP!!!!
I'll cut the guy some slack for the first couple of songs to adjust
settings, but come on, JLMB was what, 1/2 way into the show already! Mr
Soundman, if you can't handle simple things like paying attention
(especially during one of my favorite songs off FII, sheesh!!!),then
step aside, CHOOCH! I was a Techincal Theater major in college
Techincal. It's not rocket science to make a list of where the sound
changes are. Checking the list during the show is as easy as, say,
picking up the garbage? :)
In all fairness, when he had it right, it sounded great.
As far as the -important- stuff goes, the band was ON! They absolutely
nailed UAGM. I noticed Mike looked out at the other members with
satisfaction after it. The "fasten your seatbelts" version of #ytsejam
can not be adequately described in words. It simply must be experienced
:)
Sorry I couldn't make the pre-show. I didn't see the e-mail till today.
Our group ended up in the Little Italy section about a mile away
As always, good to see the gang (Brian, Julie, Ryan, Chris, Mike, and
those who I must be forgetting) and to meet some new faces as well
(Erica). Pat, where the heck did you run off too after the show??? Next
time, bro!

I am about to order a couple cds from Dream Disc. One will
definitly be Rhapsody's 'Legendary Tales' because I have heard
very good things about it. The other will be either the newest
GAMMA RAY or ABRAXAS's 'Tomorrows world'. Does anybody have this
album or the 'Liason' (I think they are the same)?
In case it hasn't been mentioned. I saw BIG WRECK on the
MuchMusic countdown at number three a couple of weeks ago. I
almost puked.
I picked up HAMMERFALL's 'Glory to the Brave'. It kicks ass but
I actually don't really like some of the lyrics. I also got
the GATHERING's 'Nightime Birds' which is pretty cool but It has
a tendency to get a littlet boring sometimes.

Hey now, we can't read people's minds. For all I know, so-and-so joined
for the CD and used the newsletter for toilet paper. That's his business.
Don't impose judgement on him for something that's really not a bad
thing. People were told they would get a CD, and if that's why they
joined the fan club, then they have every right to be upset.
Holy shit, folks, the show at the Vanderbilt was beautiful. First of all,
this is a great venue. Classy. Second, the drinks are high quality,
which is nice. Third, I was right at the front against the stage, so
i had a great time.
*highlights*
Derek, John P, and Mike joined in wiht big wreck for their last song. And
later, big wreck came out a few times to sing with dt. james' microphone
and megaphone both worked fine as far as I could tell. When did Derek
replace the fiber-light thing with the TV's? (One of the TV's actually
had a small signal coming through!) The "Fasten your Seatbelts" ytsejam
has become a standard part of the show, methinks.
Oh yes, and they played Trial of Tears. You guys probably didn't care
about that, did you? :) Mike later said we were the first to hear it live.
And all kinds of other cool stuff happened. It was great. I have to
go now.

DT was awesome. The sound was much better than the earlier Ballroom show.
Jaxx though was a lot more crowded (DT gave thanks for the turnout) and
HOTTER!!!! Of course at Jaxx you could get a lot closer than at the
ballroom show. The guys lookes like they were having a great time even
though it was so hot. Why does Portnoy spit so much? Portnoy's Kurt
Cobain imitation during Metropolis was interesting...

We were in there and I was wearing an early Ytsejam shirt. Kevin Madden
and I got there before 6 and Jason Hartman, Steve Z, and Mike Blevins
joined up later. Even Phil Kaplan was in there with some friends downing
a pitcher of beer... We did hang out in front of the stage for a few
minutes but got bored and bolted...
