    Paul,

I didn't know that you were taking a trip to Jaxx. Oh well, that is
what I get for not reading the Jam for about a week. Man, it sure
took a while to catch up with the weeks worth of Jams. Next
time, make sure you e-mail me before taking a trip!. Then
again now that you have met me, I can count on you avoiding
me :) When you get the chance, we need more details Paul.

    >>there's an exit off I-95 for a road named Southpark
Boulevard in southern Virgina -- and there's Southpark Mall
right next to thehighway, too. <<

I stayed there a few months ago (September), when I was
driving to Atlanta from New York. I was freaking out and
only my wife knew what I was so excited about (Maybe a
should change that last sentence.........). I don't even think
anyone else knew about the show, so they were looking
at me like I was crazy.

    >>One of the worst-designed freeway exits and intersections
I've ever seen, but it wouldn't have been Southpark without that.<<

You couldn't be more correct. I got off I-95 becuase there was
a sign that said this exit for hotels. I had to drive about 10 to
15 minutes to another highway for the same hotel advertised
    on I-95.

    Charlie.

Um, he did later... We saw him later on and he was inside. While we were
in line he mentioned that the drum tech or something said he could get

I think Kevin Madden and I figured out why DT's management doesn't let
any local acts open the show. The opener might be a better match for DT and
actually more than likely be better than Big Wreck who the label is
    trying to sell cds for.

I know that this will sound like I am unappreciative, but that's not the
case. In fact, for all the clowns that will be firing off scathing
e-mails about how you live in south New Mexico or East Buttfuck and how
I should feel lucky just to see them once, let alone more than once, PUT
A LID ON IT ALREADY. If you dont like the fact that you live in East
Buttfuck, either MOVE or recall that the rent is nasty cheap !!

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I have now seen DT in all of their four NE shows within the last 2-3
months. Each show was great in its own way. Trust me. I love seeing
them, that's why I go. But why is it that they play virtually the same
setlist at each show (except for some very unfortunate deletions every
now and again) ?? I fully understand that when a band is promoting a
new CD, they need to put their best foot forward and play the better 5-6
songs off the new CD. Fine. I also understand that some songs probably
may to be played every night regardless of anything (read: PMU). Fine.
But, I think that they should play at least 4-5 different songs when
they have recently played in an area as a kind gesture to their more
loyal fans who travel to see as many of their shows as possible. Our
number is larger than they may think.

The last show I went to was in Hartford this weekend which is within 1.5
hours of Providence, New Haven and Boston each. All places that they
have just played within the last said 2-3 months. While YNM and
Electric TSM were nice additions, why not spice things up more, eh ??
If not change the songs, at least the ordering.

When I went to NL in April 97 to see the three shows there, they only
did a single song substitution on one of the three nights !! And that
was the second night in a row at the same venue !! Of course, since it
was ToT, it was great, but you get the point.

On the Home for the Holidays tour, they played the firetrap known as the
El-N-Gee two times within a week and they played about 80% different
material the second night. Tres mucho beuenos, amigos !! So they
(including DS) CAN do it. So why not go for it ??

If I were in a band, I would get bored as a fuck playing the same songs
every show. These guys are not stupid mindless grungers, they are DT !!
Keep yourself mentally stimulated so you dont wear out.

REPEAT: I know that this will sound like I am unappreciative, but
    that's not the case.

Well, I went to see them last night, and decided to post a review this time.

Wow. This was the third time I've seen them (I drove up to New Haven for the first show this tour, and saw them 2 years ago during the Home For The Holidays dates here at the Malibu night club), and it was the first time I got anywhere near the stage. I went early (6:30) thinking I'd get a good spot, and the front of the stage was already packed! I managed to get a decent spot where I could see. The music they were playing (I learned later it was Liquid Tension Experiment) sounded great. I wasn't really into Big Wreck, but near the end JP, DS, and MP all came out and played with them. The audience actually seemed to like Big Wreck. I kept hearing people yell out "Big Wreck!"

Well, I wound up having to head to the bathroom during the break, which meant losing my spot, but I made it back to somewhere in the same area. I had a few tall guys in front of me, but managed to get away from them when the show started so I could actually see:). (I was over on the side of the stage near John Petrucci.)

The show from then on was great! I was having too much fun and never looked at my watch once, but I heard later the show went on for 3 hours! I don't remember the exact set list (although someone else posted it), but they played most of FII. The encore was amazing: Trial of Tears and Metropolis. I thought it was the first time they've played Trial of Tears, but I later heard from one of the band members that they played it once in Holland.

After the show I heard people calling "Bafu!" and went over to them, and met Chris Merlo and a bunch of other Jammers. (Jim, I was looking for you but never did find you:).) Security started kicking us out, but Chris gave me an extra backstage pass (Thanks again!:) )

Backstage, I got to meet everyone except Derek, and they were all really friendly. Especially John Myung: I went over to get him to autograph my CDs, but the pen I had wasn't writing. I usually carry a sharpie, but since I just got back from Arizona a few days ago, things got moved around a lot with my pocketbook:(. He told me he'd be back up, and went downstairs and came back with a sharpie! (If anyone happens to talk to him, thank him for me!:) ) Luckily most of the other already had sharpies, and were happy to sign autographs.

One interesting thing: I noticed Mike Portnoy carrying a CD by a local prog band Eye Of The Storm that someone had given him, and commented that it's a great CD. I know I'd mentioned it in ICQ chat once, and I wonder if the person I recommended it to is the one who gave it to him:).

Well, it was a great show, and a great place for them to play. I hope they play there again when they come around again (and I'm not just saying it because I LIVE in Plainview<grin>). It was really nice to meet all the Jammers I did meet. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Sharan Volin sharan@pobox.com http://pobox.com/~sharan Musicians Online: http://pobox.com/~sharan/musiconline/ Local Rock: http://pobox.com/~localrock/localrock.html -------------------------------------------------------------------

And if I'm stuck in the tunnel in rush hour traffic in my CD-less truck? I happened to start listening to a station I had all but given up on, when someone on here mentioned that they (they being WAAF, nya nya :) started playing YNM. Persoanlly it's a nice surprise to hear it...

I think that the cat's been let out of the bag before, but I won't spoil it for those who don't know the contents. ;-) I must, however, rave at how awesome the CD insert and tray cards are! I still haven't. But my first listen or two (I brought the CD home and played it three times in a row) - since which most of the album has, as I expected it to, grown on me - was sure disappointing.

As long as they keep it down to a few. I also hope they get more recognition - I'm really happy to hear that they've been getting more airplay.

I know he's got at least one effects processor in his rack, and his floorboard has two pedals that can be assigned to different parameters of the effects - maybe the processor includes a wah effect which he assigned to one of the pedals for one of his solo sounds?? I can't speak for others, but I'm sure many joined the fanclub just for the CD. Why else really? Any hot news that one is looking for can be found right here on the jam. I used to be a member of the fsnclub and the news in the Fanzine was sometimes outdated by the time it came to my door.

What a load of fucking bollocks, you speak for all the dedicated fans ? I don't think so, I concider myself to be a 'dedicated fan' and I like every song on FII, granted some more than others. If you can only find '20 or 30 minutes of bliss' then that's your problem :)
