The queen "Soundtrack" album is their album called "A Kind of Magic" -- =
it has the 4 or so songs that were prominent in Highlander, though in =
different versions. One song -- "Hammer to Fall" (was playing in the =
survivalist's car when he finds Kurgan and that other guy fighting) is =
from their previous album "The Works"
There's also an instrumental score from all 3 movies combined on one CD =
available through the Highlander Mail-order catalog you get wen you buy =
one of the videos. I can get that info for ya if you want.
As far as I know, there is no other Highlander soundtrack album.

To kind of continue this thread, and I know I'm preaching to the
choir here, but Dream Theater really should consider this.
Not just because it would make us fans incredibly happy :), but
it really would help to get their music out to more people.
The hippy/jam band scene is a great case in point. I can honestly
say that I've heard Dream Theater on the radio more often than
I've heard Phish (not much on either count), but guess which
group constantly sells out Madison Square Gardens?
I think the number one reason for this is that Phish encourages,
and actually helps tapers tape their shows (via a dedicated
taping section, and in the old days, soundboard patches).
Of course, Phish is a group of amazing musicians, but there are
amazing bands all around that can't sell out the Grog and Tankard,
much less a larger venue. Phish managed to do all this, and
are still a long ways away from being mainstream, especially
in concert (they recently played a 45min version of a 5min
song!).
A person in the Phish organization has said that their huge
success can be partly attributed to the taping and trading of
their shows. Since Dream Theater, in recent interviews, have
said they desire more commercial success, it seems obvious to
me that they should start to allow taping. They are not getting
the kind of radio support they deserve, so it's time to take a
more grass roots style of getting the music out. And it doesn't
cost them a penny. Of course, people are already taping them,
but it's not so easy to get copies of a desired show, especially
if you are a 'newbie'. But if taping were allowed and more
wide spread, then the tapes would be more freely distributed.
If you go to the Phish newsgroup, almost everyday there are
'newbie' offers, offers of shows for nothing more than
blanks and postage. This is how I was first exposed to
Phish, and I now own all their albums, and have seen them
several times in concert. Without that first live tape
exposure, one that cost me a 90min tape and $1 return postage,
that never would have happened. Conversely, I wouldn't have
this incredibly expensive DAT habit, but that's a personal
problem I'll have to deal with :)
The only problem with DT allowing taping that I can see,
is that they will have to address my second biggest complaint
about them: static setlists. Sure they change it up now
and again, but for the most part, it doesn't vary much
night to night. They have 4 LPs+ worth of music, mix it up
a bit! I can understand wanting to play the new stuff, but
maybe they could put a new spin on their older songs. I'd
love to hear a 1998 version of Light Fuse And Get Away.
Experiment a little, get crazy. Turn the lava lamp up to
11 and see what happens.
I'm not expecting a 45min version of Status Seeker, but I
think it would be more fun for the audience and the band
if there was more experimentation, more of the unexpected.
Wow, that's the most I've written in years :) I guess it
just means that I feel very strongly about this.

falling asleep :)

Hey, everyone. Check this out. Today I came across 2 DT boot vids at this
store in my local mall. Having only enough money for one, I asked for a 5
minute preview of "Milan, Italy - 8/01/97". I liked what I saw, and picked
it up. Here's a somewhat brief review.
They opened up with parts I and II of ACOS. Sounded great, except for
James's vox (he just wasn't on). Next came "The Mirror" and "Lie". Same
deal. THEN, they played the original version of BMS - VERY COOL. It
sounded a little heavier live, and the HK part was cool - I just didn't
like the way they went back into BMS, right before the part where Derek
would have started playing that riff over JP's rhythm part. AH-TKH was
next. THAT WAS GOOD. They added a jam or two (I'm not sure how long ago
they added these) - it was cool though. After that, they played something
(??!!) that sounded like a cross between ANM and CIAW - it was interesting,
to say the least. Next - JLMB. Exactly the way it sounds on the album.
It grooved. I liked. They went right into PS, and it was excellent. PMU
was next on the list - best performance on the tape. LITS- somewhat
different structure, but it still sounded really good. I'm still watching
this now, so I'll post the rest later.

Hello all,
If you can't buy a legit copy of this CD how are taking money from the
hands of the musicians? I too fail to see the difference between a tape
copy and a CD-R copy. What are these guys stance on MP3s? How about it
I promise to make a poor quality MP3, then is it okay? The industry
really needs to figure out who the enemy is here. Is it the guys making
a thousand copies for sale or is it the one guy who makes a copy for his
friend since the original is out of print?
I'm all confused.

Any cd-r copy.
it's one thing to pass media from digital to analog, but quite
another from digital to digital. it's not that they don't want the music
around.

Let's look at it this way.
Echolyn made their first 3 albums on their label.
Echolyn sold the masters to Sony.
Echolyn cannot make any more copies of the first three albums.
no matter how you slice it, ANY reproduction of these albums ia
violation of copywrite laws (you can talk to mike bahr about that...).
Echolyn, in all honestly, has no juristiction. Sony owns the albums.
If *you* want to make mpeg's and other sorts of stuff with the
stuff, i can't stop you. I, of course, will have no part in it. I've
spoken to Chris, and he (as i've stated) fully wants the music out there,
but the music *IS* still under contract. so, *any* reproduction is a
violation of the law.

I have it, and yes, he does rip, and, by the way, it's Stu Hamm :) But I'll
still stick to my guns. Stu's, Billy's, Manring's, Wooten's - all of them
are great players, all of them are, to some degree or another, influences
on me, and all of them deserve a place in the annals of Bass Playing. But I
still think bass solos should either be:
a) unaccompanied, and thus, a song into themselves (i.e. 'NV43345' by Billy
Sheehan or 'Monkeysuit Businessman' by Michael Manring - two compositions
that can stand on their own), or
b) non-existant in your typical rock song. IMHO, they just don't work.
Remeber, as I said before - it's called bass for a reason!!
And I notice that a couple of people brought Jaco into the picture - I was
talking rock. The world of Jazz is a whole different story ( :) ), and one
that I'm not educated enough to comment on (I will probably get email
bombed for this, but I really, really HATE jazz, so I don't waste my time
with it....)
I never realized that I'd open a can of worms with this thread. This is
interesting.:)

I think the prototypical role for a bass player undeniably is the
accompanying function (at least that's what most are payed for...:-)), yet
-- as so often -- it is interesting and rewarding to experiment and expand
this function... in the context of a band, this, however, also implies that
certain functions have to be fulfilled by other band-members... be it that
the keyboarder plays bass lines w/ his left hand (just think of Josef
Zawinul or Dieter Miekautsch who really are good at this), or even that you
have two bass players like Stanley Clarke working w/ Jimmy Earl (or my
favorite: Eberhard Weber & Steve Swallow on Gary Burton's "Ring").
Speaking of Weather Report... they always had excellent bass players, no
matter whether Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, Jaco Pastorius or Victor
Bailey.
BTW, re Billy Sheehan I agree his special is doing outrageous fills, though
I don't have any complaints about his playing "rhythm bass", too. Also,
anyone here sharing my opinion that listening to WDADU I can't help feeling
that he had been a great influence to JM? Not to speak of the modifications
he did to the Music Man Stingray on the photograph (added a DiM Model I and
a P-Bass PU... :-))

Didn't you say that you'd be willing to dub copies (of the out of print albums)for people on audio-cassette? How is this any different? It's still reproducing the material.

Does anyone know where I can find the best FREE guitar/bass tablature program? I would like to put up some bass tabs for Hell's Kitchen that I just spent about all of enternity trying to transcribe. You can E-mail me privatly if you want.
On a side note, I'm having some trouble singling JM out of the mix. It seems tike the timbre and frequency of his bass blends in a lot with the bass drum and what not. If anyone has found what frequencies to single out, I'd appriciate your help. It would make my life a lot easier trying to figure out what the hell he is playing.
On yet another side note, I think an example of how time changes can add sooooo much to a song is very evident in Hell's Kitchen. DT uses 5/8 measures interlaced in the prodometaly 6/8 song to add intensity and anticipation that I believe could not be achieved as well with just a plain 6/8 or 4/4 song. I know there are many other examples where DT uses amazing time sig changes, but I thought I would throw out one.
