Well, I finally got that "Burning My Soul" MP3 to work, so I got a chance to finally listen to it in its true form, and I just have to say that it is 100+ times better than the one on FII. I was one of the ones who thought "Man, what are they bitching about now?" when people said the demo was better, but now I have seen (or rather, heard) the light. It's great! IMHO, it's much better for having the "Hell's Kitchen" intro and interlude. However, I can see where DT was coming from by separating and expanding somewhat "Hell's Kitchen." For one, it segues into "Lines In The Sand" a lot better in its separate song form. For another, I do love the end of FII's "Hell's Kitchen." I love to play it and I love to hear it. (Thanx to Ardian Ibrahimij for the tab!!! :{) ) I'm debating whether or not to record a tape of FII with the BMS demo.

Hehehe... yeah... the WRONG side (J/K)

    > entire music world. He puts so much emotion into RHYTHM parts, of all > things. He holds nothing back.

I challenge that sentiment, by saying I don't believe you would consider his playing so emotive if you A). recognized how simple it is for ANYONE to play that stuff just like he does (not the technique alone... the whole "sound" of it), or B). listened to half of the guitarists I have. There are only a few players more overrated than Hettfield... luckily for him, one such player is also in his band.

    > Well, I DO deny the sellout point, and here's why: I find their pre-Black > album stuff <with the obvious exception of Justice>

Obviously (*makes the universal sign for "I have no idea"*) Justice is exactly like everything else they'd done to that point. You can't single that one out just because you like it.

    > I consider "ungodly cheese". It seems that they are so concerned with > fitting into their "idiom" that they don't write for themselves--they > write for "Metallica fans", that is, ingrates like we who buy the records.

I can't believe you just said that. You just keep on telling yourself that, and everything will be okay in your universe. I guarantee!

    > Is that not selling out? It is certainly an aspect of it. Didn't Lars > once say "[Metallica] didn't sell out--we cashed in!"? Right he was. > They took advantage of their commercial success to start doing what THEY > wanted, rather than what they thought the kids would like.

Dude... I mean no disrespect.... I had a pseudo argument with a friend on #ytsejam, where he told me Steve Vai sucks and Keneally plays about half as well as someone in their 5th week of guitar lessons... I just didn't know how to respond to someone like that... I mean, obviously he hears things differently than I do (it turned out to be a joke). Clearly you understand things in a vastly different way than I do, and I wish you well on your quest for enlightenment. We'd only get in a fist fight if we were to continue this discussion, though (please note the use of exaggeration). I tend to analyze the techniques, the melodies, and the overall quality I perceive in the music. Metallica, besides lacking in all of these areas, in my mind, has no integrity, because of the way they handled themselves. They weren't that young when they said they'd never get involved with videos, wear make-up, get preppy haircuts, and play power ballads. They were older than me, in fact. How do they justify completely abandoning everything they stood for, and built a reputation on? Oh, I know... because the money wasn't as big... there we go. Sell out. Bring me any Metalisciple theory you want, but you're never going to disuade me of this belief. I understand it, and I respect your opinion, but I do not respect Metallica. It will not happen in this lifetime, I'd bet. I don't have the reverence for the band that one needs in order to believe the line of shit that the band spews in its defense.

And look... I just posted entirely on Metallica. Everyone, mail me one of those middle finger e-mails. Haven't seen one in a long ass time!

Well, as the proud owner of many earlier Bahr releases, I have decided that it is time to auction off some of the early gems in order to raise some cash. I also have some recent ones. Here goes: Dream Theater-Subconscious #451 Dream Theater-Acoustic Dreams #197 Dream Theater-Darkest of Winters #44 King's X-Acoustic Spirits #8 Rush-Critical Mass (2cds) #463

These are all originals and bidding will begin at $20 per one disc set and $40 for Critical Mass. I'll close the auction when I've gone three days without a bid. Send bids to: kvill@flash.net.

    Thanks, Kevin.

I see real potential here. But it's gotta have music by the spice girls. if what i read is true and ciaw was in spice world, all we can do is return the favor. In fact, let's have NO DT music at all in the movie. I think DT should cover spice girls songs. They'll definitely sell more CDs this way. Now, how to get DT to get into those short, tight skirts...

Regarding great solos: I haven't had a chance to go through all of the related 'jams, but I haven't seen anybody mention Michael Schenker. So now I am:

Michael Shenker -Rock Bottom this solo just builds and grows.....

Adrian Vandenberg -EVERYTHING this guy does has some fantastic feel and melody! He was the only reason Whitesnake stuck around as long as they did.

Tony MacAlpine -Empire in the Sky/The Witch and the Priest Just check this out. Powerful soul. The first guitarist to show me word aren't necessary.

Ritchie Blackmore -Eyes of Fire as well as most of his other stuff. It sounds so random, yet fits so well.

Reb Beech! Hey, I liked Winger! So do what you must...

John Petrucci -Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand 'nuf said

Thanks for the opportunity to expunge these opinions. I feel better.

I think that you may be confused about Adrian's appearances on Whitesnake albums. Adrian has only played one Whitesnake album, which is their most recent and worst 'Restless Heart'. Adrian has been in Whitesnake since after the '1987' album came out, John Sykes played on that album and of course Steve Vai played on 'Slip Of The Tongue'. He did play on the US remix 'Here I Go Again' that was released as a single too :)

Hey! I went there, knew it was gonna be a prank.

And if you hope there arent any stupid people on the jam, sorry to burst your bubble, but:

    1) We have the moron who posted about mathematically evaluating DT without giving us anything to make us think he was kididng...

    2) Everyone who got pissed because he posted it.

    3) We have the guy that posted about Empty Tremor being an orgasm miraculously transformed into a CD.

    4) Everyone who got pissed when they thought their prog-open-mindedness was challanged by the aforementioned.

    5) The one guy on the list that just showed up and thinks Paramount is producing "DT vs. EastWest: The Neverending Story."

    6) The people that show up and tell us all about their first experiences with Dream Theater as though we have never heard a story quite like theirs, and then politely ask if they can get detailed info about obtaining every DT boot under the sun, "just to start off their collection..." Dont they realize the hunting is half the fun?!?

    7) The people that think the Lie single actually EXISTS. Someone is laughing long and hard about that one!

    8) The guy that posted the etymology of the word "fuck."

    9) The guy that subscribes every year around the beginning of December just to send 37 copies of the E-snowball to the list and then leaves.

    10) Anyone that has ever posted "You guys care too much about whether the drummer is in 3/7.5 or 18/87 time."

    11) The hundreds of the people who sent in their money hoping to get the Xmas CD, only to find out that the address changed. Dont worry, Im one of them, dammit!

    12) That guy who thinks he will actually find someone worthy enough to control the FAQ... ; )

    13) The people that think they will EVER have as many ins as Mosh.

    14) Those on the list that have ever thought Graham was serious about anything.

    15) Everyone still subscribed to the Metropolis list.

Steve Zebrowski: RIGHT ON!! That's exactly what I think about FII, and I think the more one listens to it, the more inevitable your/my conclusion becomes... that the band has simply gotten better at writing songs the way they want to write them.

In less than 12 hours, this phone line (602-892-4761) that I'm netting on is history, it will be back up on February 4th or so, and I don't know the number yet (for all of you who call me from time to time). Melissa's line will be up but I can't use it to call out, and that pisses me off. Seems the house I'm moving into has ancient phone wiring, single pair copper, not even fiber, and not only can't handle more than one voice line, but won't do data at better than 2400 baud or so. So on 2/4/98 the whole house gets retrofitted for fiber plus digital (it's in the neighborhood, they just never fixed the house for it) and I should be back online with a new update, answering my 4,000 e-mails that I'm sure will accrue in the meanwhile, and for now I'll just try to get as many as I can answered tonight before they pull the plug. If I can manage to get the cablemodem people off their ass, I might have internet back by Saturday, but don't count on it. :) So for now, farewell to all, and I will return!!! Muhahahahahaaaaa!!!

Oh, BTW, since I won't have any e-mail to answer, I'll probably get tons of CDs made, because this won't interrupt my production work in any way. I'm sort of looking forward to the respite. And I get to figure out how to use this keen CD painter. You're in Arizona. You've got Miller Lite. Life is good. (anyone remember that ad?)

Well done, Denver. You sure did earn it, winning in KC and then Pittsburgh, and finally beating the Pack in what has to be described as one of the best Super Bowls ever. Both teams really DID come out to play, both teams played hard. They say the Pack was worn down by the end; I think they may have been a *little* fatigued, but GB's gameplan has traditionally been to win with their *offense*, and that meant letting Denver score quickly at the end so they'd have a chance to tie things up before they ran out of time. It's Smith, Mobley, and Atwater that stepped up to the next level on that final drive, in some cases literally sacrificing their own bodies to hold Green Bay from scoring. I'm proud of Green Bay for getting there again, and I'm proud of Denver for winning one for the AFC, for Elway, and for keepin' it close. :) Arizona Cardinals in '98-99!!! We can do it!! (smile)
