Hiya, jammerz!!!
While the huge discussion about bass solos I just forgot to mention one of
the players that do EXACTLY what we all call a SOLO - that is Randy Coven.
As far as I know Randy has got 2albums which are extremely hard to find,
cause the had never been re-released... I only heard several songs by him,
but that man plays real SOLOS!!! His band consists of a rhythm section: a
bass and drums+another bass (!!!) which does all the soloing parts, and it
rather plays the role of ordiary lead-guitar, playing patterns that are
more common for guitarists than for bassists... Randy also has an
instructional video 'The Ultimate Lead (!!!) Bass Guitar'...
Btw., if anybody ot there has any of his albums (solos, not where he just
does the bass-part for other projects), please mail me, maybe we can trade.
thanx

same perspective from the bass, i should say from the start. i dislike
"red lenses" simply because the lyrics are delivered in quite the gay
way. "i see red/ it hurts my head/ etc." just comes out really poorly.
first time i heard it, i laughed. not the right effect, i'd say! i've
gotten by it, but it's still the worst song for me on p/g. i really
like a few songs on there--"body electric," "red sector a," etc., but i
tend to think, of all the 80s albums (signals, p/g, PoW, HYF), p/g is
the weakest. there are a few songs, including "red lenses" but also
"between the wheels" and even "afterimage," that don't hit me as
strongly as most rush does.
think of it this way (or, at least i do):
ITIGB=YNM: comfortably skipped at all times
RL=IF: a weaker effort with some less-than-thrilling sections, but
definitely with redeeming value
or something....

John Myung did a demo like that with a machine and it sounded the same

Ok so mabey not that much, but here's a few comments and questions.
1) Has anyone else had problems with the MP3's from the offical DT site?
2) X-mass CD: When Neil responded to this issue he said that he had most
of the mail that was sent to the closed box, but was not sure if
everyone would get a cd because there was only so many made, and the
"new" subscribers that were stuck in NY were not taken into account. I'm
in this same boat, and I relly hope everyone who was involved in the box
mishap get's a CD.
3) Anyone have MP3's of Where Are You Now, Raise The Knife, Caught In
Alice's 9 Inch Tool Garden, Eve and To Live Forever?
4) I heard TWiUtB and Speak to Me. Great songs. To bad they could not
have taken out YNM and put TWiUtB on FII.
5)I also like FII as the best album. Innocence Faded is a good song, I
like everything about it (even the corus) except for the part where the
song seems to slow down and the lyrics go "beginnings get complicated.."
I just don't see it fitting with the rest of the song.
Gotta run...

Why do you assume that it is all Kevin Shirley's fault? Are you sure
Shirley had absolute authority? I have not heard one DT member bash him,
and I'm sure we all know how MP had problems with the production of I+W.
In fact DT has gotten out of their way to praise Kevin Shirley. First,
can you guess who is re-mixing MP's project Liquid Tension Experiment?
It starts with "K" and ends with "evin Shirley!" Someone must have liked
his work on FII. Second, at the JP clinic in August, JP played along to
Take Away My Pain and said he was very proud of the song. He said what a
great job Kevin Shirley did producing that song and the whole album,
when he did notr have to. Don't vent your frustration about DT on the
producer. If you have problems with FII address them to the musicians.

What's with all of the Innocence Faded bashing? Personally, I feel it's among the best Dream Theater songs. As others have said the whole "some will transcend spinning years" part kicks ass and is one of Labrie's most powerful performances IMHO. And even if that part of the song didn't exist, the 3 minute jam at the end of the song is among my top 5 DT jams on any album....
Also, I happen to fortunately live near a couple of good small record shops that still stock live recordings. So if anyone is interested I can pick up the following for those who want to send me the $$$ up front...
Consciously Unreal - 2 CD set. Skyway of Nightmares - 1 CD set. Live at the Marquee (German) - 1 CD Hollow Years single - 1 CD (2 copies of this)...

One of the basic concepts of the scientific method is repeatability. With that I offer the following:
If you can listen to it more than once, it rules. Otherwise, it sucks.

> On that note, I want to be clear that there was certainly an > intended note of humor in that post. I hate Metallica, not because they > can't play their instruments to save their lives... that's just an added > bonus to make fun of...
Personally, while I can't stand Kirk's or Lars's playing and think of Jason as nothing more than a E-string rider with the occasional good idea, I find James Hetfield's rhythm playing to be some of the finest in the entire music world. He puts so much emotion into RHYTHM parts, of all things. He holds nothing back. Not a soloist, but nonetheless a better soloist than Kirk. :)
> I hate them more because I find them to be filled > with ungodly cheese, ever since the Black album. Not even a "Sell Out" > issue, which, in this particular case, can NOT be denied, when considering > their past statements about videos, lyrics, and heaviness in general.
Well, I DO deny the sellout point, and here's why: I find their pre-Black album stuff <with the obvious exception of Justice> to be filled with what I consider "ungodly cheese". It seems that they are so concerned with fitting into their "idiom" that they don't write for themselves--they write for "Metallica fans", that is, ingrates like we who buy the records. Is that not selling out? It is certainly an aspect of it. Didn't Lars once say "[Metallica] didn't sell out--we cashed in!"? Right he was. They took advantage of their commercial success to start doing what THEY wanted, rather than what they thought the kids would like. Why does all the earlier stuff sound just like Kill 'em All? Why do Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets sound so similar? They reached a comfort zone and they tried to stay there. Then their bass player is killed. They find all this anger. They put it into a record. After this anger subsides a bit they all find that they've gotten a little older. The go back to record the Black album. Business as usual, right? Nope. A little older means a little wiser. They realize that they can't just be "guys in a band"--this is their JOB. Have to write singles. Is this selling out? It's just another aspect of it. The songs are still Metallica, no matter what anybody says. There is material that is just as hooky and tuneful on Master of Puppets. Sanitarium would sound just as at-home on TBA as it did on Puppets. But, I digress. Anyway, mega-success of the Black album assures them that they can do whatever the hell they want and people will still buy it. So that's what they do, and we get the Metallica that made Load and RELoad, the Metallica that is no longer afraid of letting their non-metal influences be heard. They are now playing whatever they want to play, fuck the people. Is that selling out? Well, I still think that's an aspect of it, but it is the least of the aforementioned evils.
> If they want to make some cash, great. I just think they sound > ridiculously bad. Hetfield is a decent thrash vocalist. When he does > anything else, he sounds like a moron to me.
No way, dude. Hetfield can do it all. Here is a man who puts everything he has into everything he does. He can play sixteenth-note rhythms for hours. He can scream and sing his heart out while doing it. Plus, he breaks every bone in his body skateboarding. :) His singing gets better and better.
Now, on to how this all relates to Dream Theater... :)
With FII, DT is no longer writing idiomatic prog songs, which I believe they were guilty of on WDaDU and, to a lesser degree, I&W. They are now writing Dream Theater songs. Is LitS prog? sure it is, but there's no extraneous material <except for maybe the Chick Corea-inspired piano stuff toward the end> like so many prog songs. They played until the idea was finished. Is Hollow Years prog? No, but it's definitely Dream Theater. Like Metallica, Dream Theater has found maturity--the maturity to play what they want to play as opposed to staying withing their genre or idiom. Dream Theater, however, doesn't have the "burden" of mega-success driving them to this decision; simply maturity. Is that selling out? Hell, no. FII is DT's most mature, original, BEST work to date. Has John Petrucci changed from "composer" to "songwriter"? On FII, yes. I think with Metropolis II we should see a bit more of John Petrucci the composer. I think the band has room for both.

Let's not forget a cameo appearance by Mike "Raise The Knife" Bahr in which he saves Super Drummer Man (Portnoy) from the evil bad-music demon, "Hansor"! Also, something similar to a Music Deathbowl '98: DT (with Kevin Moore AND Derek Sherinian) vs. Fates Warning! Plus, all the members of Rush and Yes show up from time to time and acknowledge DT as the best prog band since Marillion!!!
..then again, maybe not...
