    Okay, maybe not.

Rogerio 'bout the gaps in Three Minute Warning:

    > your new CD (after it being replaced). The correct ones should begin with
    > MAXX (with two "X"). The defective ones have only one "X".

Mine's catalog number begins with MAX, yet there are no 2 second gaps
anywhere there shouldn't be. Weird things going on.

Kickass album nonetheless, though my vote would go to Black Light
Syndrome. Or Rudess/Morgenstein, for that matter. :-)

Well before I unsubscribe for a while due to class and work teaming up on me,
I thought I'd list some places where anyone can find the symbol that appears
inside the cover of "Live At The Marquee." Hopefully the present FAQ-
maintainer will remove that section of the FAQ, because it's WRONG. The
previous FAQ-maintainer just wouldn't listen to me no matter how much I
screamed at him, but luckily I have evidence now that proves that the symbol
is a public graphic design and nothing more. You should be able to find the
symbol on the covers of all of these things, or the bindings:

Noam Chomsky. "Secrets, Lies, and Democracy." (book, political science)

Swedenborg. "Charity - The Practice of Neighborliness." (book, religion)

    Bob Carlisle. "Butterfly Kisses." (album)

Anne C. Rose. "Voices of the Marketplace." (book, U.S. history)

I have more examples if needed, but the "Butterfly Kisses" album should be
very easy to find. I will not be held responsible for anything that happens to
anyone who actually LISTENS to that album.

    Three easy steps:

    1) Create an HTML page which contains the phrase "Hootenannies R Us!"
several times over, and post said HTML page to the jam. You are advised to
repost it approximately 10 times just to make sure it gets through.

    2) Pretend to be Merlo and gay, and post sexual fantasies to the jam.
Again, repeat several times (with entertaining variations each time) to
    ensure success.

    3) Wait.

    Hi all

First a review, then a recommendation.

    ANATHEMA - Alternative 4

No, this album has nothing to do with so-called "alternative" music, but is simply the best doom/goth album of the year so far. Like all of Anathema's past full-length albums, this latest offering from Liverpool is not immediate, but rather grows with every listening. The first thing that becomes apparent is Vinnie Cavanagh's greatly improved singing, although all of the songs remain as melancholy as ever. All of the arrangements are beautiful, yet mostly subdued, with the exception of the slightly up-tempo "Fragile Dreams" and "Empty" (which have a Paradise Lost feeling about them). Nice use of keyboards and violins adds a dream-like quality to the songs, which just seem to float out of the speakers to enshroud you. This album is a natural progression from "Eternity" and is sure to be flamed by the hard-core doom fans who haven't yet realized that death grunts and corpse paint have gone to the musical graveyard, but for me, this progression is a sign that the guys in Anathema have matured both as individuals and as musicians. What else? Well, some very clear influences from Pink Floyd are in there (like on Tiamat's last album), and the off-beat rhythms of "Re-Connect " even remind me of Tool. This album establishes Anathema as the band I've always wanted them to be, and I can't imagine a better doom album being released this year. A clear 10/10.

Now for a recommendation for those of you with open minds and an appreciation of dark, hard-cutting humour. Get a listen of the album "Rant In E-Minor" by the sadly-deceased Bill Hicks. Funny in the extreme, questioning, black, gall-spitting, full of hatred and truth, stuff that takes an in-depth look at society and each and every one of us. To put it in the words of the record company "WARNING: Bill's albums contain everthing your parents hate, everything the church preaches against, and everything the government fears. Enjoy!". Couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks to Jerry from Munich for the tip.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag) Currently playing: Smashing Pumpkins - Adore "Jiggling titties, who would have thunk it?" - Bill Hicks

    Two things,

    1. Itchy - congrats. A well-deserved kudo for you. Good job!

    2. 'Vital Tech Tones' - this is the 'improvisational' cd with Steve Smith, Scott Henderson, and Victor Wooten. I bought it last night. After the third song I had to take it out to calm down. This is the best instrumental CD I have ever bought(with LTE a very close second). While LTE rocks - and rocks hard and well - VTT just grooves. And grooves. And then says, "Bah. That's not grooving - THIS is grooving." And grooves. Tight? Tight. **TIGHT** Steve Smith is great on the drums, and Scott Henderson has the best phrasing I've ever heard in a guitarist (apart from Jon Finn). Vic Wooten literally had my jaw on the floor with his performance. I'd heard Vic before, and was like, "Wow. He's great." But this.. this... it's disgusting. No one should be allowed to be this good. The fact that this CD was written in the studio makes it even more impressive. It's not DT, it's not progressive, it's some pretty intense fusion, and it's the absolute balls. I'd recommend it to anyone. Whoever first suggested it on the jam - I owe you a beer. :) -N

Its about time Under a Cyber Moon became the offical site.

The new Kansas cd is great. If you are a fan of the older tunes get this cd as it is older tunes but with the London Symphony backing the band up. According to the cd this took 2 years to make.

Speaking of ABBA, when I was on vacation in the Canary Islands the last week of May, ABBA played at a "barbecue" that the timeshare place held. I guess just the 2 women are touring the clubs there and singing to a tape. Can you say "Super Trooper"... Ugh...

Well, it's been awhile since I've had anything to say. First off, to Korg X3, I don't know where your tastes lie exactly, but DEFINITELY gice Close to the Edge a second chance. Yes has put out a lot of mediocre stuff, but this is their pinnacle, pretty much.

Also, you mentioned Gabriel's So album. This goes for everyone, then. As strong as So is, Us is an even stronger album. However, the Secret World--Live album is THE definitive Gabriel album for anyone and everyone. It predominantly highlights these two albums, but the musicianship is superb, the performances absolutely breathtaking. For LTE fans, if you REALLY want to hear Tony Levin shine, his live performance here is incredible. He stands out well in the mix, and the focus is on his Stick playing.

Ah, and a perfect segue into a recent release recommended for absolutely EVERYONE. King Crimson just released Absent Lovers, a double live album recorded back in '84, on the last day of the Three of a Perfect Pair tour. The material on the album, save two instrumentals, is drawn exclusively from the three early-80's albums (also Discipline and Beat). The lineup here also features Levin on Stick and bass, along with Robert Fripp on guitar, Adrian Belew guitar/vox, and Bill Bruford on drums. The sound, though, is very clean, and the album on the whole extremely listenable.

And then, on the subject of live albums, if anyone is interested in any of the following bands, their live albums (all 2CD) pretty much represent them best:

Dave Matthews Band: Live at Red Rocks Bela Fleck and the Flecktones: Live Art Pink Floyd: Pulse Blues Traveller: Live from the Fall

    Alright, enough from me.

Hello, I know some of you guys are into fantasy novels and such, so a piece of news. I don't know if any of you ever read Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, but Disney is finally releasing The Black Cauldron on video. It is the only Disney movie never released on video and never re-released to theaters. It originally came out 13 years ago, so my recollection is vague. This made me ever so happy to find out. On a DT related note, I'm happy to see that DT is going to put some of the non-album tracks on the live album (or it at least appears that way). I hate it when bands just release live versions of album tracks (ahem... Dave Matthews) when their live shows are so much more. Rush doesn't count, the difference in their shows is visual...

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 23:08:22 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Prog???

    >How exactly do you define progressive rock?

I loved this reply which appeared in the Letters column in the September 1993 issue of Keyboard magazine:

To be classified as prog rock, music must adhere to the following criteria:

    1. Songs can be no less than seven minutes in length, except in the case of the prog rock/techno crossover, in which case five minutes is acceptable.

    2. Anything in 4/4 is immediately disqualified.

    3. The composition must contain at least three of the following instruments: Mellotron, Hammond B-3, Moog Modular (Minimoog acceptable) or any synth made before 1984 and weighing more than 100 lbs. Instruments must also go out of tune after every third song.

    4. Performers must be able to play in several time signatures at once, with no one part recognizable as a singable melody.

    5. A minimum of five key changes is required for each five minutes of music.

    7. Try to find a beat. If you can't, it's prog rock.

    8. If the composition wanders aimlessly, it's definitely either prog rock or Dave Stewart on painkillers.

    9. If anyone under the age of 30 likes it, it is not prog rock.

    10. And finally, if you can dance to it, it isn't prog rock.

Steven W. Wagenheim Roselle, New Jersey

This response is from from the Letters column in the October 1993 issue of Keyboard:

If a band meets five or more of the following criteria, they're prog:

    1. At least one member uses Greek mythology or Zen koans as lyrics - at any rate, nobody knows what the hell the singer is talking about.

    2. A typical song lasts longer than your average shower.

    3. On many songs, each musician plays in an entirely different meter and/or key.

    5. The keyboardist has more synthesizers than fingers.

    6. Bill Bruford was a drummer at some point.

    7. Their album covers depict strange animals crawling over weird geological formations into which blue-pigmented children have carved stairways.

    8. They can sell out an arena and still have more lights on stage than people in the audience.

    9. Rolling Stone and Phil Collins would both rather burn alive than hear this group's latest album.

    Terrell Miller Norcross, Georgia

And I can't forget Keith Emerson's reply: "It is music that does progress. It takes an idea and develops it, rather than just repeat it ... Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down [and] the other way around, and explores its potential."

That reminds me, how many people have heard Neal Schon's solo discs? Are they worth picking up? Not that I have the cash to spare at the moment, but hey, what's one or two discs to add to the ever-growing list?

Jimmy Buffett's show at Lakewood in Atlanta last night rocked, despite pouring rain for half the first set. Good thing I'm going again on Thursday. You should go too.

Yep. They did sorta release BC a while ago on video as Tarin and the Magic Cauldron -- it was severely edited, allowing it to be rated G (instead of the normal PG). I wish I could get ahold of a ver of BC in letterbox, tho -- the thing was filmed in 70mm, and looked great (all nice and dark) in the theaters.

Rumors are also flying about the possibility that Disney will reanimate some sequences, add a musical number or two, and re-release BC in theaters. Those are unconfirmed, to say the least.

I hope that the covers make it, too. I'd hate to see all that good music go to waste. Actually, I don't want anything cut -- three CD's is fine. ^_^ I do not envy the guys when it comes time to cut 220+ minutes of music down to 156 minutes. Eep.
