I would suggest finding a nice 50 Watt and above 2x12 combo with the best
CLEAN sound you can find. Make sure the power amp section is TUBE. Like
Chris P said, I too have come to find that the sought after TUBE SOUND comes
from the Power amp tubes, not necessarily the Preamp tubes.
Once you find a nice clean sounding 2x12 50watt and above amp (50 watts
atleast if you plan to play with a drummer - 100 Watts is usually too much for
most purposes AND IT IS NOT TWICE AS LOUD AS A 50 WATTer), buy the Boss Metal
Zone Pedal. Between a Carvin or Fender 2x12, a metal zone pedal, and the neck
and bridge pickup - you have just purchased a nice little travel package that
can get you a GOOD clean and distorted rhythm/lead sound. Usually what I do
is set up the Metal Zone for the best crunch rhythm I can find on the Bridge
pickup. I have a Duncan Jazz in the neck pickup and it is perfect for
switching to a lead sound. It takes away all the "point" that you like in
your rhythm sound but not in your lead sound while retaining a very CLEAN
attack (actually cleaner than the bridge). As a general rule - I play the e,
B, G strings with the neck pickup AND the D, A, E strings below the 12th fret
with the bridge pickup for leads. This isn't a strict rule, but rather a
guideline.
Now if you want to add a little more depth to your lead tone - I would suggest
a nice delay pedal for the leads and a nice chorus pedal for the cleans. Why
pedals? Well, they are perfect to learn how to shape your sound on and they
never seem to stop being useful even with you have your mega rack later on.

Fenders to be MORE than adequate. And as for tube/ss arguments, I play
through a solid state Fender M-80 and the gain is incredible, as is the
clean. I think this was the most underestimated of amplifiers.
As for those harmonics that fella wanted: forget the amp. If you're
playing with stock RG pickups, you need to get rid of them. If clean sounds
are important to you, I'd steer clear of EMGs. But Dimarzios have great
harmonics, and still retain a crisp clean tone.

Definitely check out Mesa Boogie amps. The mark IV is really versatile,
with a graphic EQ on it. The Trem-O-Verb combo is a dual rectifier amp
with tremelo; it's pretty damn decent.
Marshall makes some real good amps, too. I had a valvestate combo a few
years ago, with a tube preamp and solid state power. it sounded damn good.
I also really, REALLY like Soldano amps. They have one of the
sweetest tones I've ever heard.

PF. I would go with Animals next. You can also try The Final Cut,
Momentary Lapse of Reason, or the Divission Bell. In addition, there are
two live albums, Delicate sound of Thunder, from the 1988, momentary lapse
tour, and Pulse from the Divission Bell tour. Try those. I haven't really
heard the albums before dark side, except Atom heart mother, and i am
still freaked out by that album.

I have to 100% agree with Jeff here! I just haven't been the same since the news hit yesterday (thanks Mike for posting it!)- and as a devout Catholic Youth Minister my faith is REALLY tried during these events! I was mentioning it at my high schoolers meeting tonight, and I don't think we really came to any conclsuions! here's a guy that spent the majority of his adult life on the road, and then the two most precious things in his life are ripped from him within the span of one year. . . And I just don't know how I'd go on! I have Alex's e-mail, and I want to write something meaningful, I just don't know if it'd be the right thing to do. I mean, Neil basically did want to be left alone, and maybe that's just what we should do as fans, I think he knows we're pulling for him, he just has to be in a terribly lonely place right now, and I don't know how he's going to pull himself out! I pick Holland to go all the way...
But soccer is not boring... but I do belive you have to play it to enjoy it... I was down in LA over the 4th weekend playing the soccer tournament there... Which we won... Took 1st place... but besides checking out girls at the pool, and the big drinking bash in our hotel room for the 4th, all we did was watch the world cup... It's inspiring to watch players that good! You learn from them... MLS is shit right now (hoping to get better) so you have to watch European soccer to get the good stuff... It's like watching John P. play guitar for 90 minutes and being awed and tring to pick up tips as you go... But anyway...
Anyone know if what's up with Laser's Edge? I placed an email order a while ago and they have not responded with a conformation... I have never ordered from them before... should I call to be sure they got it?

Well I was just about to reply to this thread posting this same fingering, but someone beat me to the punch! Actually I cheated a little. I wanted to be 100% sure, so I ripped LITS onto the hard drive, cut it down to this part, put it on half-speed, and these are the exact notes. This is the same fingering I use to play it, but playing the right notes is a little more important. Both times I've seen them play it live, he uses a 6-string, not a 7. Because the majority of the song seems to be in D, it throws people off a little. I'm working on tabbing out the solo, so I hope to have that up and running soon. Later.
In other DTC, I heard the whole 23 minutes of ACOS the other day on WKLQ here in Grand Rapids. Granted it was 1:40 in the morning, but still...you know.

I took a listen to the track and did notice some similarities, but come = on, that was ONE part and not the whole song. IMO they vary = tremendously except for the one short solo section. I don't even know = if the chords are exactly the same, but if you put some chords together = and play like Holdsworth, you're bound to find SOME match to something = Holdsworth has played before. Let me remind you Holdsworth has recorded = a LOT of songs. =20

Well I just went to said show last Tuesday in Kalamazoo, MI, and here is review. The show was announced with less than 3 weeks notice, so on the day of the show, I was calling all around to make sure that the show hadn't been cancelled due to poor ticket sales. I didn't even hear or see the first bit of advertising. When I arrived at Wing's Stadium, I was surprised to see that there were actually a lot of people there. First up was Dirty Deeds, who are the first band that Steve Harris signed to his new record label. They sounded like Kix. A lot like Kix with more Maiden styled lyrics. They stole lots of AC/DC riffs. This was not my cup of tea, so I'm not really fit to review it.
Then came Dio. Granted I've heard his bigger stuff, I still wasn't overly familiar with his stuff. I don't know who was on guitar. It wasn't Rowan or anyone else I've known to play with Dio. I never realized what a dancer he was. He was shimming all over the stage! Overall I was impressed with his show. He played a bunch of new stuff, Heaven and Hell, Neon Knights, Holy Diver, Children of the Sea, The Last in Line, Rainbow in the Dark, and a few others.
Then of course there was Maiden, which essentially is what I was there for. It's not every day you get to see your favorite band play live. They were in top form tonight; the only way they could have been better would be if Bruce and Adrian were back, but they did the best they could with who they had. They didn't do quite as much stuff from the new album as the initial setlists had shown, which was good. They did the best 3 songs from X-Factor and 6 from Virtual. Blaze was much more entertaining than he was on the last tour. I heard the full stage show was back, but this wasn't exactly true. There was a nifty setup that covered all the amps that went all around the side of the stage that made it look like they were playing in a dungeon. There was a nifty light show, but no pyro at all. We didn't get to see a big Eddie come up from behind the drum kit during "Iron Maiden," but at least they had a giant walking Eddie that came out for that song. I was surprised to see them playing such a big venue in America so late in their career, but they definitely had a respectable draw, a good sign indeed. The songs from the new album sounded a lot better live. A lot of the parts that Blaze sang flat on the album he managed to get them right in concert! The setlist:

My few gripes: Absolutely nothing from Killers or No Prayer for the Dying! No "surprises," just what you'd expect to hear (although it was kick-ass that Sanctuary returned to the setlist). Blaze still had trouble with some of Bruce's higher parts, but I expected that.
Overall it was a great show that I'm so glad I got to see. It was also nice to see them on this side of the state instead of having to drive to Detroit for a change. Go see it if you're a Maiden fan.
DTC: former Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson has been known to sing with DT on rare occaisions.

I learned it using a 7 string. I thought I heard 7 on the opening chords, without a doubt, and still think it's very possible he's using a 7 on the song on the disc, though live he hasn't, that I recall. Regardless, I think the tab book is wrong, and while I don't have my cd handy to recheck this (and I learned it by ear rather quickly, so this may be way off) my part is different than what I've seen so far.

I definitely voice the chords for 7 string, because they sound more like the album that way. Both chords are downstrokes, and the rest is alternate picked (I start with a downstroke) Tomorrow I'll run out to the car and grab the disc to check the notes again. I admit I learned it without sitting down and analyzing it, but none of the tabs I've seen seem to sound like it so far, except Calvin's, and he does all that hammering and upstroke economy crap, so we can rule his picking out, at least. <Grin> Flame on.
