I just read Dave Plotkin's post about the (apparent) end of Rush, and
boy did that ever send me right back to the moment late in the wee hours
of the night when I first read the announcement about it. I'm still sort
of in shell shock about the whole thing. Just like they say... first
you're in denial, then you deal with it. The latest word from Doug Maher
(the only person who's been 100% right about all Rush events over the
years) is that Neil is hospitalized and will be further evaluated later,
and that in what may be seen as the peak of optomism, Geddy and Alex
will write some new music (but not lyrics) after a long break with their
families on the off chance that Neil ever feels up to being a part of
Rush again. Alex's exact words about the current situation with Neil
were: "It's bad. Very, very bad." Not promising. After all that's
happened to NP, I'm inclined to just let the poor guy be. I almost feel
shameful hoping that Rush may someday live again. So while I'll always
wish for it, I'll never think they "owe" it to me. If anything, I owe
them, for getting me into DT, QR, etc just by connection, in addition to
the value their music provided. Whatever Neil does at this point, I'll
respect his wishes on the matter.

About the Kick into a Dream boot... it's soundboard, but it's
definitely not the master SB DAT. It was an FM broadcast and in all
probability the master for that CD was someone's cassette recording off
the radio. It's still clear, but you're absolutely correct if you
noticed that it ain't exactly Mind Control quality. :)

Anyway, I'm going to be out of town for two days sometime soon (I don't
want to post exactly which days because of my address becoming public
and the paranoia that comes with it) to help throw my parents a 30th
anniversary party and so forth, so don't sweat it if neither Melissa nor
I respond to e-mail until after. That's email about anything... not
    necessarily Pr*sm. :)

    > But now I've got another question, motivated by Calvin's answer: > what exactly is the definition of a power chord?

okay - first off - I was going to send this via private email, but I always wonder how many questions are being asked that others may wonder about but never asked - so I am posting it here.

A power chord really isn't a chord - but rather a harmonic interval - the Root and Perfect Fifth. You can stack these too intervals anyway you want. "Power chord" is actually rock guitar slang. Play a POWER CHORD on the piano and it doesn't sound so powerful. For something to be called a TRUE CHORD - the harmonic combination must have three or more different intervals. to make it simple - these are power chords.

    e ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- B ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- G ------------5----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- D ---2--------5---------------0------------------------------------------------- ------------------- A ---2--------3---------------0------------3------------------------------------ ------------------- E ---0---------------------------------------3---------------------------------- ---------------------- E5 C5 D5 C5

    okay - the first two are COMMON POWER CHORDS - Root, Perfect Fifth, Octave E5 = E, B, E C5 = C, G, C

the next two are actually Perfect Fourth intervals - but with the bass guitar (or keys) establishing a root note of D and then C - they become power chords. With a low bass note - they can tend to sound LOWER than the E5 power chord I provided even though the E5 notes are LOWER in pitch. The D5 and C5 are actually Power Chords (inverted) with the Perfect 5th on the bottom.

In reality - a Power Chord is a diad, not really a chord. Simply put, crank the gain - hit a power chord and start a band. The "power chord" is probably the most popular distorted guitar diad. Ask Metallica. If you learn the power chord and then learn about the TRITONE - you are already a guitar god :oP

Hiya's... I'm still around, just skimming the digests right now due to lack of time. :)

For you people who have already sent in preorders for YOUNIQUE, the following Webpage contains the requests I've gotten so far. This is a page-in-progress; if I have time I'll make it less ugly but for now, it gets the job done. Please email me immediately if you aren't listed. (Aside to Matt Smith: got yours, just didn't get in this version. You're #25 unless I missed a count.)

If you haven't sent in a preorder for a signed copy of Younique from the band, there's still time. Please email me at the address below for price, etc. This is for the Eastern US only; Pam Doise is handling the West.

If you haven't gotten Superior's first CD, "behind," I suggest The Laser's Edge at lasercd@aol.com. Last I heard Ken's price was $12 for each CD, which is a terrific deal.

    ---GREETINGS ALL TRUE DREAMERS!!!---

-PLEASE READ ALL THIS CRAP, I COVER A LOT OF GROUND!-

Well, this is my first-ever True Dreamers post. Whoever digs DT and TD rocks out, right?

To all on e-prog, my name is Max Amundo, and I will fight and die for the music of DREAM THEATER and TANGERINE DREAM. I also dig this band called Cusco (anybody hear of them?), Genesis, Alan Parsons Project, Kansas, KMFDM (now you know why I like the heavy, dance TD), Depeche Mode '83-'93, The Cranberries, and other prog-metal forces. And Dream Theater ARE the leading proponents, although they're NOT the most cutting-edge (The Edge :) ) I'll say more on that tomorrow...

I've been on Dream Theater's "Ytsejam" for over a year now, but left as I had no way to read the jams, then came back about a month ago. I just lurked around for a while, then I started asking people "Who listens to Tangerine Dream?" What I expected was a lot of "Who the Hell are they?"... but they're actually SOMEWHAT known out there.

But it wasn't quite enough. I needed to talk to others who would be really into them, so I joined TaDream about 2 weeks ago. I found that more people than I expected would totally stand up and die for the early TD, but they would hunt those down who stood for the old AND the new TD. I know it's not even closely that extreme, but I'm still surprised by it. Of course early TD was very influential, and rhythmic, and beautiful. But the new stuff is still, just excellent music. Oasis, for example. Yeah, I do have that. My favorite is #5, Waterbourne. It's where they stop using rock guitars as a regular instrument (but Goblins' Club doesn't really, either), but it doesn't even NEED them. Just like their older stuff.

Yeah, I know Oasis, TimeSquare, (don't know Transsiberia), are more dancey-flavored, but it's the sequencing and the over-all, not a verse-chorus rock band, sound that focuses on what they can do with their instruments, that is taking them back into the away-from-the-mainstream, underground sound. I agree it's not as inspired-sounding, so I don't know how long I'll follow them like this... but at first I didn't like Goblins' Club, either. But as for "Yellow-years" (cheese), first let me explain that Logos is one of the coolest, most inspiring thing I have ever heard. <<<WAKE UP!>>> (c:]>* But a part of the next-to-last section of Logos, and half of Dominion, just had cheese pouring from the speakers. The rest makes up for it, but it sounds like a Driver's Ed. school video or the music to Cheers. But just so it's clear, I've listened to the whole thing several times, and especially up to 25:42. And I love the spacey effects in the cheese-sections, too. And Poland? GOD, track 2 is my favorite, and the encore-thing at 15:50 to the end is like my favorite thing of theirs. That and... uh, oh... Too Hot For My Chinchilla (stupid name) from Lily On The Beach (just a gay name). Absolutely gorgeous.

But I also like stuff that rocks out, too. Hence the Dream Theater and 220 Volt/Tournado stuff. And I hear no cheese there. Yeah, maybe Ambient Monkeys. But you know what? I simply choose not to buy it. And I'm also curious what other TaDreamers think of Canyon Dreams. I think it's awesome. Just actually bought it.

I really like Miracle Mile, but from the samples online, I don't hear anything all that great about Livemiles. Could someone review it for me?

I also see White Eagle all over the place. Can it compare to, say, Hyperborea, which I'm reviewing tomorrow?

I know Underwater Sunlight isn't on TDI. I just want to know where I can find it in CA. Maybe I just have to order it like Poland. I go to Circuit City for most TD purchases. And someone wanted to know about Theif. I could have it in 10 minutes if I wanted it, but I've never heard it. If I can help, I think it's like $9.99. But maybe more. If you REALLY need it and can't find it, I'll buy it for you and send it if I can trust you to send the $. You can trust me to send the CD. I'll see how much they want for it.

Stupid CDnow has 220 Volt on backorder, and Best Buy just got it! Damn. So I asked CDnow to change the order to Lily. Like you care...

And I've never heard Dream Academy, Elias. I have heard, and dig, Eternity X. How in the Hell did I find someone on TaDream who listens to Eternity X? I don't listen to all the bands in that area. Just, like, 5. And bands that don't record anymore don't count. But it's like: DT, Queens, Fates, Rush, and EtX. Not Symphony or Kings or King Crimson or Savatage. How much magic am I missing?

Also, I don't know any TD-related bands mentioned on TaDream. Start crying... I didn't know there were any. But keep in mind, I like new TD.

I'm trying out "e-prog", as was suggested to me. ANYONE ON E-PROG LISTEN TO TD *AND* DREAM THEATER? Just watch. No-one will answer. I figure that sinse you're all kickass and I LOVE YOU, MAN! (sniff), that you'll write back. I want to respond all at once, so others can read what True Dreamers have in common. If you don't want me responding to your posts in open-fashion like this, let me know. But I doubt anyone will care. If you write to me, and I'll know that you specifically WANT it out here if you put "DREAMERS" in the subject, it'll be answered, where others can see. I'm just covering my ass here, and I don't think anyone will really give a crap if I respond to you on the lists or not. But if you don't, tell me.

-This is probably the longest thing I'll ever write like this, so don't be scared to write to me. Haha. You guys are great. I'll see you all tomorrow for my wanna-be review of Hyperborea, and my recommended starters for those who haven't yet felt the power of TD.

PS, and I like the World Cup. Maybe it doesn't belong on the lists, but I like reading about it there, anyway. And my signature WORKS, now. I wrote this to ytsejam, unaware of how kickass it would come out...

    --------

<< That's what I love most about Tangerine Dream; it's just so inspiring. After listening once, you find yourself listening again and again, and it runs through your mind, as Logos Live is right now. And then you become more & more engulfed, and you never, ever want out. >>

    ------

See 'ya later! This is for all DREAMERS everywhere: NEVER STOP "DREAMING"..., because your Dreams will never die.

Hoping you actually take me seriously,

    Hi

I thought I'd add my experience to this chat on amps and say something completly different. I have just recently (last week in fact), got a Digitech 2112 and it kicks ass. I don't think there is a sound I can't get out of it. I'm running it straight into the clean channel of my Fender Performer. So far I have managed to get a pretty close JP crunch sound in only a couple of minutes (well once I'd read the useless manual). But you can also have real tube distortion and SS distortion at the same time which sounds pretty big. I'm about to record one of my compositions and I am thinking of using this and panning each sound hard left and hard right and just recording both rhythm guitars at the same time thus cheating at doubling the rhythm part to get a real tight sound.

Plus if you need effects it has every effect you could ever need and the odd one that you might never use (but isn't that the case with all effects units).

Hello, The Livecrime video is from a boxed set of a show where QR played all of Mindcrime (on the Empire tour). The Mindcrime video has only SOME of the songs from the album (me runs to get video):

I Remember Now Anarchy-X Revolution Calling Operation:Mindcrime Speak Breaking The Silence I Don't Believe in Love Waiting for 22 Eyes of a Stranger

Note the absence of several songs integral to the Mindcrime storyline. I think the band paid for most of this themselves and thus had to pick songs that were "releasable" in most cases. I'm pretty sure only Eyes of a Stranger and I Don't Believe in Love were sent to MTV. Ahh... back in the day when we could see QR on MTV... As an aside, I don't find the video all that great, but the boxed set is pretty good, even if the songs are mostly dead on copies of the studio tracks. I could have seen this show if I weren't stuck in Vermont that summer. I did however get to see Winger when they came to Essex Junction... :)

Yes, it is possible to "paint" the moon with lasers. Such lasers do exist. That's how they search for some planets and stars. If someone had the money, the could conceivably light up the moon and beam lasers off of it that would be visible from Earth. Personally, I think it would kick ass!!

Does it have to be with the perfect fifth? I thought stuff like:

    -------- -------- -------- -------- --5--6-- --7--7--

(E minor 3rd and E major 3rd) would be power chords as well. Like, any combinations of just 2 notes. It's not based on theory, or a read definition, i just figured that those can sound just as powerful (Metallica's Orion), and since 'power chord' isn't really a technical term, it would work for these - diads, i guess - as well. Moo.
