    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Rogerio remarked:
    > Well, thank you for the people who have responded to my earlier
    > question about identifying a 7-string guitar. I'll pay more attention to
    > some songs and tell you what I think.

Identifying it? It's got seven strings, how difficult is that? Duh. :) :)

    > But now I've got another question, motivated by Calvin's answer:
    > what exactly is the definition of a power chord?

I believe the "official" definition is: Any chord that sounds good when
played on an electric guitar run through a high-volume, high-distorted
amp, and sounds like crap otherwise. :)

    Nick G. calls KorgX3
    > Classy.

Gotta say, that's one word I thought would never appear in connection with
KorgX3 -- unless you're referring to the board and not the person. :)

    Mike M sez:
    > "Just remember, there's no such thing as a stupid
    > question...just stupid people"

"There are no such things as stupid questions, only stupid people asking
questions". 50 style points for the person who can identify the speaker.

Andy "NOT SUBTLERAGE DAMMIT" remarked on the tragedy of Neil Peart's wife:
    > The only thing I find kind of weird is that we didn't know she had cancer.

Probably because any time you use the words "cancer" and "Peart" in the
same sentence, most diehard Rush fans will automatically discount the
    sentence as a rumor.

Really, though, I don't find it surprising. Neil was and is an intensely
private man and no doubt he went to great lengths to keep that sort of
    thing out of the press.

    Ta,
    Phil

OK, I am thinking about Derek handling an ELP tune. Now, I know that Derek can play, but Tarkus? I actually was hoping that the keyboard player from Cairo would tackle that, since the epic ruins at Avalon's Gate from Cairo's first album sounds so much like it. I am not knocking Derek, but I am very interested to hear what this will sound like. Will it be the whole song? Will Derek be the only keyboard player on it? I can imagine needing a few keyboard maestros for this album. Needless to say, let me know when it is coming out.

I am in the market for some more boots. I have one Images and Words boot on CD, Milan 93, I have Dance of Eternity on tape, so I think I got that tour covered, I would love a copy of Mind control, or a FII boot that sounds good with complete set list, from both legs if possible, and a ff96 boot or hfth boot. I have some stuff to trade, if you are interested, let me know. If Graham is still on the list, I still owe you a bootleg, I have been really poor and just got some blank tapes. i won't be able to work on the boot until I get back from Florida on the 20th, since my house is being rebuilt, well sort of. I am afraid to leave my room because of moved furniture. Could you all imagine my fear right now? Blind guy faces rearranged house.

Rah. Being the gear freak that I am, I had to step into this amp conversation and end my long ass lurking phase.

    >> Inexpensive combos can get a good rhythm=20 >> sound... I really like the=20 >> new Trans Tube stuff by Peavey. Similar to Valvestate, with more=20 >> chunk, and less price. I use a Fender Stage 112 SE as a practice=20 >> amp... it's very noisy, and loses a bit of chuink on the rhythm for=20

As far as inexpensive combos go, I really like the Fenders better than Marshalls or Peaveys. Both the clean and distorted sounds are pretty useful on Fenders, and the reverbs are usually decent.

    >> Bogner stuff. You may dig the Peavey 5150 (you will sound more like=20 >> satan than like Eddie Van Halen through this thing... it is a rippin'=20 >> amp for the 6 string thing.)

Bogner. Rah. I should get a 2nd Credit Card. Ummmm the 5150 is good, but it's not for everybody. It's definitely powerful and delivers tons of sound for the price, but most people I know of eventually grow out of it into Mesas or Bogners. In the same league as the Peavey 5150, I'd also include the Laney amps. These things have some serious balls'n'chunk for their price, they sounded awesome to me. Finally, Crate Blue Voodoo's. I have yet to play one but I know of people that are impressed.

    >> KillMary has a Carvin 2 X 12 combo that gets=20 >> some really killer=20 >> metal tones. Maybe he can post about it.

I wouldn't call mine an inexpensive combo though. I paid 800 bux for it directly from Carvin. I'm totally pleased with it though. I can get nice tones at mostly any volume and both the clean and distorted sounds rule. It sounds like a cross between a Mesa and a Marshall - it has lots more balls than the Marshall, but it's not quite as low-end oriented as the Mesa. To me it sounds like a pretty good combination, because I personally think that Mesas are better for rhythms and Marshalls are better for leads (finding a good Marshall is another story though). The Carvin seems to be satisfying in both aspects, at least to me. I usually dial in more hot-rod-Marshall like tones, while Chris Ptacek got some nice Mesa-like sounds out of it. With some more tweaking I'm sure he'd be pretty happening with this thing.

    >I'd recommend the Hughes & Kettener (did I spell that right?) combo amps.

I love their clean sound but I've never been quite happy with their distortion. It's like there's something missing, especially in the mid= highs.

    >I actually find the EMG's to be a bit to mid-dy without some serious EQ. >They do crunch, though. The 81's, that is - the '85 is a bit too mellow.= But >certainly get rid of those stock Ibanez pieces of shit! They're almost as >bad as Jackson pickups!

This may sound stupid but I like the sound of those Ibanez single coils. I'd put in a new bridge pickup (a Seymour Duncan for example) and I'd keep the Ibanez single coils for that awesome sparky clean sound they have.

    Enough of that shit. hehehe.

If you could have a perfect guitar (or whatever your instrument is), what would it be?

Recently, I got to the conclusion that it would be a Paul Reed Smith, bolt-on (for some reason I like the bolt on sound better. I've played at least 5 bolt-ons and some 10 set-ins and the bolt-ons always sounded closer to what I wanted). Dragons pickups. And 7 strings =3Do}.

A few years ago I got into Les Pauls big time, and I had a guitar designed for me that still pretty much kicks all ass: Les Paul body, 25 1/2 inch scale (Fender lenght), all mahogany set-in with ebony scalloped fingerboard, tune-o-matic bridge, Duncan JB (bridge) and Holdsworth (neck) pickups with a coil-splitter that lets me play any of the coils separately. Graphite nut. And they even let me design my own inlays. The cool thing is, the inlays are perfectly set in the scalloped neck. A 7-string version of that would be really close to my perfect guitar :-)

The opposite is the case. The book (the full size one probably about A3) has all of the bits that aren't transcribed in the book that comes with the video. But the book won't have the interviews and the other bits that JP teaches verbally. Well at least this is the way it normally works and I've got one of the Steve Morse Videos and the large book and that seems to be the case.

I disagree a bit with this. I spose it kind of depends on what you define a "bootleg" as. Everything people have listed are CDs that have been mastered, named, packaged, and sold. There are so many excellent bootlegs that haven't been released as a "named" bootleg. Sure, on Mind Control you get the standard Awake set, but it's a subpar performance from James. Why would one limit himself to a mediocre performance? One of the best Awake tour boots I've heard is from Houston (Tower Theatre 11/18/94). Same setlist, not as good sound quality (aud DAT), but much better performance and a kickass instrumental section not found on MC. Another example is the 10/26/95 show from Osaka, Japan. Not great SQ, but by FAR the best performance I've ever heard of the new, full version of ACOS. You aren't going to find it on any packaged boot, tho'. A last example is the 4/16/97 show from Tilberg, Holland. Sure, CIA (4/14/97) is a great boot, but isn't anyone interested in hearing the first time Trial of Tears was ever played live?!? Sound quality on that show is pretty poor, but it's definitely a collector's item. Doesn't anyone care about landmarks, milestones, and great performance anymore? Or is it just sound quality and a cursory, one show glance at a tour? Maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but if people would trade for boots instead of just buying what's been packaged on the shelf they would find a whole heap of treasures they never knew were out there. Take care all...

Actually, James VI (Stuart) of Scotland who became James I of England after Elizabeth (Tudor) died was Mary (Stuart) QoS's son. So I suppose she won in the end, even though Elizabeth had her executed after three coup plots were discovered.

When Mary Tudor (Queen of England, before Elizabeth) married Philip II of Spain, France took the opportunity to declare war and swipe our last French possession, Calais back from us (that's the French port opposite Dover where the Channel tunnel runs between). If it wasn't for her, we Brits would have our own spot in France to hang out in. But we got our own back by trashing the Spanish Armada in 1588.

When Mary Tudor died, she said 'Calais will be engraved on my heart'.

So there's your connection with the Majesty burning heart symbol (DTC).

(Pretty cool. I remember all that from my history at prep school in 1980. I don't remember anything about barbed wire though).

Well, there might be actually a huge number of reasons. One of them (which I can think of right now -- I can barely think now, BRAZIL IS ON THE FINAL IN THE WORLD CUP!!!!!!!!!) is that if two 'jams are sent at the same time (hardly, but it may be possible), then one conection from ax.com to hotmail.com may take more time to complete than the other (it's a bit complicated, with many factors involved, including knowing the way TCP over IP works for SMTP -- I'm honest to say that I still don't know very much about these protocols, but I'm on my way to learn it). So, if the slower route was taken by a 'jam with lower number, it will arrive later.

Also, there are other things to consider, such as (but not limited to):

    * hotmail has actually many mail exchangers; * hotmail may (while I agree that this is quite improbable with hotmail, this might be the case with a smaller site, but there may be smaller sites in the path from ax.com to hotmail) be down while ax.com is trying to deliver the 'jam #40. It will wait a bit more to resend the message once again (until a limit configured by your system administrator), before giving up completely on it. In the mean time, hotmail may be up again and ax.com may try to send #41 before #40.

So, it's a really complicated subject to know precisely why a message that was delivered earlier arrived later. This is just the surface. As I pointed out, there may be a bunch of reasons that I don't even know.

    > See 'ya next jam! > -MAX AMUNDO - a "True Dreamer"

Would you care to give a "starters guide" on Tangerine Dream? I've heard that they are a very versatile band, really progressing thru many styles and such, but never actually got to listen to them.

And since you're raving so much about them... Perhaps you might get some new fans for your preferred band, you never know. :-)

Thank you very much people for answering my question on power chords. You know, I'm just an attentive listener, not a musician. I know only some very basic facts about music and, as a result, when you start using your slang, I find myself lost (but I'm sure that I'm not the only one in the boat :-) ).
