    Could they get a deal? Based on what? If it were based on
    musicianship, then they'd be able to do it easy. Unfortunately,
    quality has little bearing. They need to have a proven, purchasing
    fanbase, or they need to fit the current trend. They don't have
    either. DT barely has a big enough fanbase to get albums released today.

    Speaking of trends, in the 80's, Lemur Voice would have had no problem
    getting a deal. That was a couple of trends back though.

    If you wanted a guaranteed record contract today, the current rock
    flavor is anything that sounds like The Counting Crowes or Sheryl
    Crow. I don't even know what to call this category, but it's what the
    record companies like right now.

    Other artists: Wallflowers, Matchbox 20, Lisa Loeb, anyone on the
    Lilith tour, etc.

    What is this genre called anyway?

    neo-folk-rock?

    (All you musicians, change your style now and start making money! Call
    1-800-SELL-OUT for details! For a low franchise fee, you will be sent
    a musicians kit which includes everything you need to become a star!)

    my $.03, BH

    P.S. Back on Lemur Voice, yes!, let's e-mail the record companies.
    That may convince them that there's enough fans out to make it
    worthwhile for a record company to release their material.

    I just checked and this dude is right on. Good ears! Maybe I just
    wasn't "looking" for that note because I swear that JP played it with
    all hammer-ons and pull-offs when they played Boston back in December.

    Hello Everybody,

    My name is Felix, and I=92m new to the list. Nice to meet all of you.

    The following post is a review of Yngmie Malmsteen=92s show in Cafe de =
    la Danse, Paris, France on June 9, 1998.

    To start off my story, I have to say that the last Yngwie album I liked =
    was Odyssey, out back in 1988. After that, with a couple of exceptions =
    on Fire and Ice and Seventh Sign, I was largely unimpressed by his =
    albums to say the least. All that have changed, however, when I checked =
    out his latest album =93 Facing the Animal =94. To cut a long story =
    short, I liked it so much that I=92ve decided to go to his show, =
    something I would have hardly imagined myself doing a mere 6 months =
    earlier.

    The first surprise of the evening was a =93 sold-out =94 sign I saw =
    posted on the doors of the venue. OK, Cafe de la Danse is not exactly a =
    baseball stadium, but its 800-1000 capacity is still considerable, =
    taking into account that a year earlier Yngwie had had to cancel a show =
    in a venue half this capacity due to the lack of ticket sales. =
    Obviously, I was not the only one who dug the new album. Well, on to the =
    show....

    As there was no opening band, the first thing we=92ve heard that =
    evening, was an appregiated burst of about 5000 notes executed in under =
    3 seconds, and coming seemingly out of nowhere, as the house lights and =
    the background music were still on. A series of such bursts followed, =
    and then a thunderous drum roll announced the beginning of the show, =
    with the band kicking off a well sped-up version of classic =93 rising =
    force =94. If I remember correctly, the band was the same as on =93 =
    Facing the Animal =94, with a regrettable absence of Cozy Powell =
    (R.I.P). The rhythm section was quite efficient, although largely =
    unremarkable. The singer was really good though, performing seamlessly =
    the new songs as well as the classics (which is no mean feat, =
    considering they were originally recorded by such legendary vocalists as =
    Jeff Scott Soto and Joe Lynn Turner). Besides Yngwie, however, it was =
    the keyboard player who was undoubtedly the most remarkable musician on =
    stage that night. His faultlessly executed parts of the prolonged =
    guitar-keyboard duels were, in my opinion, one of the highlights of the =
    entire show. A couple of words about the maestro himself now.....

    End of Part 1. To be continued.....

    Part 2:

    Although I=92m not an Yngwie specialist, I would say he was in top-form =
    and well beyond. In fact, I have never ever dreamt of witnessing such an =
    outstanding tour de force of guitar (read: shred) virtuosity. Although =
    I=92ve heard the stories, I nevertheless could not believe that anyone =
    could sweep pick over 90% of a two-hour+ show. And it=92s not only that =
    he does it, it=92s more a way in which he does it that really makes you =
    wish you had never attempted to play guitar in the first place. OK, so =
    some people say it=92s only the technique and his heart is not there. =
    Maybe so, maybe not. The one thing that I can be sure of, is that this =
    man sweeps as he breathes; it is as simple as that. Also, what really =
    amazed is that a good 70% of what he plays is actually an improvisation, =
    which is amazing, considering that sweep parts are usually based on =
    prearranged patterns and, unlike alternate picking, are pretty hard to =
    improvise with (in my opinion). Also on the menu that night was some =
    high-octane two-hand tapping, open-string passages, tremolo action, =
    lightning-fast 12-fret-plus up- scale runs, 2 =BD step bends etc. etc. =
    Oh, and the vibrato.......In my humble opinion, one thing at which =
    Yngwie truly is the best there is, is the vibrato. It is wide and deep =
    and dynamic....it is unbelievable. In fact, I first thought that he =
    actually takes his palm off the neck to do that (I=92ve seen some =
    players do that to execute a super-wide vibrato), but when I looked more =
    closely I saw that it was not the case here. Rather, it was all in the =
    fingers...

    Interestingly enough, there was only about 9 or 10 songs during the =
    whole 2 hour show. In fact, the whole show could be described as one big =
    jam with a couple of songs intermixed. Most of the songs were from the =
    new album (title track, my ressurection, like an angel, braveheart), =
    plus 2 songs from "seventh sign" (title track, never die) and a bunch of =
    oldies (i'll see the light tonight, black star, you don't remember...). =
    My favourite however was a mind-blowing 15-minute rendition of Deep =
    Purple classic "mistreated", which included a guitar jam which would =
    make Ritchie Blackmore want to retire once and for all (note: although =
    it was obviously real hard for him, Yngwie managed to play about 65% of =
    this tune with alternate picking; after all, this is supposed to be a =
    heavy blues song :)......). The biggest surprise of the evening, =
    however, was a full 6 minute blues jam, with Yngwie singing. No, I'm not =
    kidding, it was some old blues tune, and Yngwie was playing classic =
    blues licks, and there was not a single trace of shred in there (i.e. =
    100% alternate, mostly pentatonic, with tons of bends and once again a =
    vibrato tour de force). The rest of the show was made up of endless jams =
    which consisted of parts from various Yngwie instrumentals and just =
    plain SHRED with no accompaniment. Also, Yngwie did a very cool =
    instrumental version of "dreaming" during the acoustic guitar solo.

    Well, that's about it. Hope I didn't bore you too much.

    Take care and keep on rocking,

    Felix.

    never attempted to play guitar in the first place. OK, so some people =
    say=20
    it&rsquo;s only the technique and his heart is not there. Maybe so, =
    maybe not.=20
    The one thing that I can be sure of, is that this man sweeps as he =
    breathes; it=20
    is as simple as that. Also, what really amazed is that a good 70% of =
    what he=20
    plays is actually an improvisation, which is amazing, considering that =
    sweep=20
    parts are usually based on prearranged patterns and, unlike alternate =
    picking,=20
    are pretty hard to improvise with (in my opinion). Also on the menu that =
    night=20
    was some high-octane two-hand tapping, open-string passages, tremolo =
    action,=20
    lightning-fast 12-fret-plus up- scale runs, 2 &frac12; step bends etc. =
    etc. Oh,=20
    and the vibrato.......In my humble opinion, one thing at which Yngwie =
    truly is=20
    the best there is, is the vibrato. It is wide and deep and dynamic....it =
    is=20
    unbelievable. In fact, I first thought that he actually takes his palm =
    off the=20
    neck to do that (I&rsquo;ve seen some players do that to execute a =
    super-wide=20
    vibrato), but when I looked more closely I saw that it was not the case =
    here.=20
    Rather, it was all in the fingers...</P>
    <P>Interestingly enough, there was only about 9 or 10 songs during the =
    whole 2=20
    hour show. In fact, the whole show could be described as one big jam =
    with a=20
    couple of songs intermixed. Most of the songs were from the new album =
    (title=20
    track, my ressurection, like an angel, braveheart), plus 2 songs from=20
    &quot;seventh sign&quot; (title track, never die) and a bunch of oldies =
    (i'll=20
    see the light tonight, black star, you don't remember...). My favourite =
    however=20
    was a mind-blowing 15-minute rendition of Deep Purple classic=20
    &quot;mistreated&quot;, which included a guitar jam which would make =
    Ritchie=20
    Blackmore want to retire once and for all (note: although it was =
    obviously real=20
    hard for him, Yngwie managed to play about 65% of this tune with =
    alternate=20
    picking; after all, this is supposed to be a heavy blues song :)......). =
    The=20
    biggest surprise of the evening, however, was a full 6 minute blues jam, =
    with=20
    Yngwie singing. No, I'm not kidding, it was some old blues tune, and =
    Yngwie was=20
    playing classic blues licks, and there was not a single trace of shred =
    in there=20
    (i.e. 100% alternate, mostly pentatonic, with tons of bends and once =
    again a=20
    vibrato tour de force). The rest of the show was made up of endless jams =
    which=20
    consisted of parts from various Yngwie instrumentals and just plain =
    SHRED with=20
    no accompaniment. Also, Yngwie did a very cool instrumental version of=20
    &quot;dreaming&quot; during the acoustic guitar solo.</P>
