Adam preaches the path of a true bootlegger:
    >
    > I disagree a bit with this. I spose it kind of depends on what you define
    >a "bootleg" as. Everything people have listed are CDs that have been
    >mastered, named, packaged, and sold. There are so many excellent bootlegs
    >that haven't been released as a "named" bootleg. Sure, on Mind Control you
    >get the standard Awake set, but it's a subpar performance from James. Why
    >would one limit himself to a mediocre performance? One of the best Awake
    ..
    >collector's item. Doesn't anyone care about landmarks, milestones, and
    >great performance anymore? Or is it just sound quality and a cursory, one
    >show glance at a tour?

Availability my friend. How many people have Mind Control, vs how many
people have the other boots you mentioned. Of course MC is going to get
mentioned. I don't have the first clue how to get those perfomances in
Osaka and Houston, but I got MC from Scarred along with a lot of other
great stuff for $20. It doesn't do a whole lot of good to discuss boots
that nobody can get their hands on. And TBH sound quality is quite
significant to some people (like me). I'm a big fan of good production.
The quality of a recording can make a signficant difference to me. Awake,
QR's Promised Land, and Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason come to mind
as favorite albums of mine where their production really sets them apart.
Obviously it's a somewhat different situation when it comes to live
performances, but still if there's a lot of annoying crowd noise covering
up the music, or the recording equipment sucks and the music sounds thin or
tinny that can really take away from the listening experience. I haven't
heard too many boots, but MC stands out from those I've heard as having
    really great sound quality.

    > Maybe I'm beating a dead horse here, but if people would trade for boots
    >instead of just buying what's been packaged on the shelf they would find a
    >whole heap of treasures they never knew were out there. Take care all...

Hmm, how do you do that exactly? And what if you really don't have any
worthwhile boots to trade? Is there a listing somewhere for bootleg
newbies? You hit the nail on the head when you say that we never knew they
were out there. How do I trade for something that I don't know exists, nor
who has it, and have nothing good to offer in exchange? Buying boots from
Scarred and OAN, and all the rest is just a hell of a lot easier. Anybody
want to offer some help here?

    Joe

---HI AGAIN TO ALL TRUE DREAMERS!!!

WE'VE GOT NEW MEMBERS! AND AN ALBUM REVIEW BOOK!

I ran into a problem today. It turns out CDnow cancelled the 220 Volt order, so I bought it at Best Buy (still surprised they had anything!). But track 3, the title track , which the Tournado version is much better anyway, kind of drops out after the too-loud bass drum comes in. I know a lot of you have this, and I really want to know if my CD is messed up, or if they're all like that, or what.

Circuit City. Someone bought Theif earlier today! It's been there for weeks on end, then somebody buys it right when I actually wanted to check it out. I may never see it again. But Circuit City's still pretty good. I go there often looking for the TOTT and TOB CD5s. How do I get them?

Also Circuit City. Some ytsejammer wanted to know where to get Liquid Tension Experiment. There you go! Just keep looking for it. I don't know where the company goes though, so there might not be one near. But if there is, it'll most likely be under the Dream Theater section. You don't have to order it.

THIS SUCKS! The band KMFDM has had this collection called Retro for a long time. It has all their important early (86-91) tracks. But you had to order it from their website. I was going to in 2 weeks. They've had it for 2 years, and just now ran out - permanently. Damn!

All you E-PROGgers, I'm subscribed, but under digest form. I don't know how often they come out, but I haven't gotten my first one yet. So please e-mail me off-list for now. I'll tell you when I get the first one. I did get some posts, but changed it to digest this afternoon. Remember I'm in California, another gay name.

CAN YOU YTSEJAMMERS help me out here? Obviously Dream Theater isn't totally cutting-edge. But they're still the main noticed proponents of prog-metal now. We did prog-metal origins really recently. But I hear a lot of people don't think they are. I don't know why.How can I describe the difference? I mean, they've had the mainstream attention, without (and they haven't) sacrificing who they are. Just like Rush. A moment of silence... .. .. .. .. So, can you help? Just 'jam them to me, or direct e-mail. Either way, it'll eventually end up here.

I was going to talk about my music, and the band Chris and I haven't started yet, but I need something to say next time, right?

ALBUM REVIEW TIME-- TANGERINE DREAM: HYPERBOREA 1983

This will be a little difficult, as TD this period progresses soundwise from album to album. So I'll give my general impressions of Logos and Poland, the ones right before and after Hyperborea. Logos and Poland are both very popular, and in truth I only got Hyperborea at the time to fill in the picture - show the progression. You've heard my cheese complaint about Logos. But that doesn't really do the album justice. That is one of those albums that gives you the impression of crossing a desert at first, but it's kind of a soaring, brassy sound. Then, it gets dark and scary. It makes you go "Whoa... this is freaking me out, but whoa... THIS is cool!" Then the scariness turns into a more mysterious rocking-out with an almost guitar-sounding keyboard. Then it's simply the most beautiful, rhythmic, not-really-majestic-but-more-of-a-pull-you-in feel. And these last 3 sections are all connected together. It's an adventure. Then the album sounds almost classical, with different off-beat flutey sounds going, then it loses it. But that's still a LOT for 1 album. And it has other really cool parts later on, too. Poland is just awesome. It reminds me of Miracle Mile, as I heard MM first, but it's got something no other album I've heard from them has. First, I'll say that there are actually a couple of slow, boring, not-sure-what-we're-doing-next parts in it, but they're few & far apart. The sheer creativity, the experimentation..., all the while sounding much more "advanced" than anything before... it's great. And I've mentioned this album before, too. You probably get the point.

--SEE, I WAS DOING ONE review, and it's turning into 3. This message is going to be longer, too. Oh well, I CERTAINLY can't see going over THIS. It'll probably thin out a lot after this...

---HYPERBOREA was the bridge between the two. Unlike the others, this one never gets dull, and is more upbeat than the others, although pretty close to Poland speedwise. Although it does sound just a little more like Logos. There are 4 tracks. Track 1 - Starts out calm but then builds and gets more complex, and in the end it's very upbeat, and an almost happy, cultural sounding thing. More complex than Logos, but then again, it's building into Poland. Track 2 - The book says it sounds like Phaedra. Nuh-uh, it sounds like Hyperborea 1983. Some of the most pure Tangerine Dream magic they've ever done. Feeling and rhythm and rock collide here. If nothing else, get the album for this track. Track 3 - Another more upbeat one, although none of them are slow & droning. For 3:55, they actually manage to do a lot, maintaining the Logos quality while instrumentally reaching out to the future of Canyon Dreams and Miracle Mile. Track 4 - This is where it's at. At first it's like other TD, high-speed background with soaring melodies. But here, a neverending drum beat (I'm a drummer) which has the exact same quality as Phil Collins of Genesis, comes pulsating through, lifting and carrying the rest of the music. Great. Then, you think it's going to end, but it doesn't. It further develops and opens into the next level, utterly carrying you with it. This sound is that which develops the more rhythmic side of TD for a while. Oh, "Can you feel The Rhythm?" (Aurealis soon-yo-be) This is an essential to anyone liking late Virgin/blue years stuff. And especially if you have Logos and Poland, it's the perfect connecting block, even though it doesn't have *quite* the majesty or mind-stickingness of the others. But you know what? Because of that, it never gets old.

I hope that didn't suck too bad. I'd like to hear outside opinions on these & other albums. Also, from hat I've said, tell me: WHAT WILL I THINK OF "WHITE EAGLE?" I want to say it won't have anything really gripping that I just HAVE to have, but I could be way off.

Promising shorter books for you to read, I'll see you later. Hey... "Dream on!"

    --------

<< That's what I love most about Tangerine Dream; it's just so inspiring. After listening once, you find yourself listening again and again, and it runs through your mind, as Logos Live is right now. And then you become more & more engulfed, and you never, ever want out. >>

    ------

See 'ya later! This is for all DREAMERS everywhere: NEVER STOP "DREAMING"..., because your Dreams will never die.

Hoping you actually take me seriously,

Yes. They're differnt, rather different, but still great. They are less mainstream, and more bizzare. Vernon Reid has more (ie some) guitar solos that just seem random. And I mean this in a very good way. The other albums are a little more wild.

_Stain_ may be a bit more like _Vivid_, but I don't really remember. I think I liked _Time's Up_ better at any rate. The ep _Biscuits_ is pretty cool, but very short. Proceed to this when you no longer think _Time's Up_ is random enough.

    > And now a recommendation for you folk. Go out and rent a movie called "The > City of Lost Children". Friggin' awesome.

I second this. It's by a French directing team Jeunet & Caro, who also brought us "Delicatessan." Jeunet also directed "Alien Reserruction," and while the story isn't representative, the visual mood is. And Ron Perlmann and Dominique Pinon are also both in all three films. "The City of Lost Children" also has a mood/ visual style similar to possibly "Blade Runner" and "Brazil."

What genre of film is it? I really don't know. Possibly a drama, I guess, with comedic elements present, but I don't think that describes the film very well. It's bizzare. It's visually stunning. And it's in French.

Both The Dandy Warhols and Curve were phenomenal tonight. Pearl Jam tomorrow.

    Sorry I wasn't clearer before:

They've hospitalized Neil for a number of reasons but mainly it's to safeguard his own health and to combat the deep emotional depression he is currently in (and who can blame the poor guy??). They want to make sure his melancholia doesn't cause his physical health to become a problem, and they're making sure he doesn't starve out of grief, and so forth. Basically the guy's just a walking zombie right now and they're taking care of him until he gets to where he can start to cope with all that's happened. I sincerely wish him the best in my prayers. I hope nobody sees this as dramatization or grandstanding, as I'm only repeating the facts as I was told them, and I just don't want anyone to be misinformed. A lot of rumors are flying now on usenet and it will just create problems for the band if they're not squashed.

This I mostly agree with. I&W and Awake tour shows were far too similar for my taste. Tho' I think the Awake tour in particular had a great setlist, I have more respect for bands that put in the effort to make each show unique. I&W and Awake, from this standpoint, were godawful tours. DT has started to improve this more in '98. The first leg of the FII tour (through very late '97) generally followed the Awake trend by keeping pretty much the same list (LITS -> BMS -> Voices, etc ad naseum), tho' they did work other songs in occasionally (YNM, electric TSM, Lie, etc) that weren't at most of the shows. In '98, tho' they're doing a better job keeping the variety up. Tho' each show is pretty much based around one of two setlists, there are usually surprises of some sort. It helps that they've added things like Speak to Me and Anna Lee for an extra bit of spice. Nightmare Cinema and Nicky Lemmons are cool as well...

    >to trade unless you have something they do not. So unless you're DAT >master taping shows, you're stuck with what's common and what's out >there on CD/CDR.

That's not necessarily true. I trade almost exclusively analog and have a pretty good list of relatively rare boots. If I had more of the green stuff I'd have a good bit more material. It can get expensive, and it can be extremely time consuming when done properly. CD-R technology is making this easier since it's basically toss two CDs in, hit "copy," and 30 minutes later you're done. It is a bitch, however, to convert everything I've traded on analog to digital. I've started doing it, but it's pretty obnoxious. As far as getting into the "in" community on the 'net, it again comes down to time. Every trader started with nothing to trade. There's always someone out there who will help you get started, and from there it's just a matter of talking to people and setting more and more advanced trades up. I always do 2:1 trades if asked, and the majority of the traders I've dealt with will do the same. I've also found that no matter how common a boot is (not talking about generic CD boots here), there's always someone that will need it. I lost my copy of 12/27/95 (HFTH tour) and just setup a trade for it from a newbie trader who happened to have it in his whopping 8 tape collection. (The fact that I forgot about it and setup another trade for the same show a day later is another story.) :-) Bottom line, it can get expensive and time consuming if you do it a lot, but I find it wholly worthwhile. It's a great feeling to have a package arrive in the mail with tapes you've been dying to hear. Fun stuff... lateron all...
