    Ahoy,

The new date for the next Houston Ytsenight will be August 1st. (I think I accidentally put Aug. 3rd in the last post.... that would be a Monday.... this is a Saturday.... sorry about that!) The place will most likely be the Hard Rock Cafe. Anyone interested is welcome to attend for an evening of good music & good food (last time I was there anyway). Email me if you are planning to come. As the date gets closer we can decide on a good time - hope to see you there! - Mark

I know Paul Cashman has posted about this, but let me add my two cents worth. For those of you west of the Mississippi who wish to preorder Superior's soon-to-be released cd, Younique, email me at this address. (Those of you EAST of the Mississippi can preorder through Paul.) At this time, we are only collating names of interested buyers. When the release date nears, we will collect the money for the cd, ship it to Bernd, and then he will ship the cds out in bundles of 25 to save on shipping costs.

    Thanks again, Pam Doise ytsepam@earthlink.net

Quite simply, that genre's known as Flavor-of-the-Month. Look at Lisa Loeb, she had like one hit from a movie a couple years ago (they still play the video on VH-1, I believe), and know look where she is.......yesterday's news.

    Hey all,

Just wanted to report that LTE recently received a favorable review by Relix Magazine, a music rag devouted to Greatful Dead-related music. There was a short, generic description of the project, so I won't bother to copy it here (says all basic stuff like "featuring Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci of Dream Theater........recorded in just 8 days!). The review appears in the album reviews section (go figure!) and includes an alternate take of the picture on the inside cover where Mr. Portnoy was obviously not ready for the camera flash. The good news is that some of my Deadhead friends are actually interested in purchasing the album. I've let one borrow my copy for the past week or so, and they're telling me that 'The Stretch', 'Universal Mind', and of course 'Three Minute Warning' are their favorite tunes. Again, I can't stress how great the album is and how cool it is to hear MP and JP exploring jazz concepts. LTE is certainly one of my favs, hats off to MP for such a great idea.....

Just a quick note to add about ChromaKey. The reviews so far have been pretty on the mark.. it sounds rather Adult Contemporary, with shades of techno-industrial. One comparison I haven't seen yet: I think it sounds like Kevin Gilbert/Toy Matinee. Melodic and catchy, with a vocal that's a little dry but tolerable. Chromakey is a little less "poppy" than Toy Matinee though.

I haven't seen much discussion on the samples. I wonder where he got the one in Hell Mary, or if he had it made for the song. But anyway, here's something interesting about the one in Even the Waves. There's a sample that plays in the background of most of the song, and it's a little louder at the beginning and end. It's a woman's voice speaking a series of syllables. To me it sounds like a shortwave radio spy numbers station. If you listen to shortwave radio much, you've probably heard these broadcasts, which are coded messages where a series of numbers is read in groups of 4 or 5. The language used varies depending on the station. The one used in this song sounds German, but I'm not positive. For more info on numbers stations with audio samples, see http://www.access.digex.net/~cps/numbers.html . P eart family wishes to grieve alone By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun This past weekend's tragic news that Rush drummer Neil Peart lost his wife, Jackie, to cancer has prompted an outpouring of grief from the band's fans wondering where they can send flowers and/or condolences.

But Rush's Toronto-based management company, SRO, said yesterday:

"As per the family's wishes, it's kept very private. There's no service, or any charity, or anywhere to send flowers etc. They just want to be left alone at this very sad time."

Peart also lost his and Jackie's 19-year-old daughter, Selena, in a car accident last August.

    Hey jammers

Just caught this on a TV show today. Apparently the guy who interrupted Bob Dylan's performance at the Grammy's (Oscar's?) earlier this year was an artist and get this, his name is Michael Portnoy! Maybe that explains why Mike yells out "Soy Bomb" in the middle of Ytsejam on the Static Progress boot. Just a thought.

MATT, Don't you know that if DT DID become popular, the big difference would be that more people would hear the magic. Personally I feel that DT will never sell out, and FiI was NOT a sell-out. But doesn't it just pain your heart to realize how many people don't know Dream Theater? Think of how crappy our world is, how much crappy music makes it that way, just picture ten million people listening to gangsta rap, ten million people whose eyes are never opened... Now, imagine a world where Dream Theater is, not the standard music, but popular. Ten million eyes open... What would the world be like? You tell me the difference it would make. And Dream Theater by nature and 10-year foundation will never sell out. The whole entire point would not be Dream Theater going mainstream. They wouldn't be Dream Theater anymore. The point is a bunch of people turning their eyes to DT the way they are now. The band members CHOOSE their style of music over possible mainstream sell-out success. The media cannot change that if Pull Me Under's success didn't. Just imagine, Matt, a world where everyone knows the term "prog-metal", and a world where it still is. Dream Theater are the biggest hope this world has to make that happen. And I will NEVER stop fighting until it does. THAT'S how I feel.

And I will tell everyone NOT to watch Small Soldiers (c:]>* Now my signature...
