Well, i picked up Classical Gas (the mannheim steamroller version) and not
much on there did much for me. i much prefer fresh aire. but then, fresh
aire has had over 5 years or so to grow on me, while i just got classical
gas. so who knows. Moo.

Jammers,
This post has absolutely no purpose except the one-upmanship of being the
first person to post and use the following abbreviation.
Boy am I looking forward to hearing OIAL. Isn't that a great feeling after
months of typing FII, LTE ????
I think as live album names go I've heard alot worse. Talking of live
albums what are jammers ultimate live CD's / tapes in their collection.
For pure quality and catching a band at their peak Live After Death Iron
Maiden takes some beating. Scorpions World Wide Live is another cracking
double album....."ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE CALIFORNIA..........."
Mind you I've literally just stumbled upon a bootleg tape I totally forgot
I had of Queensryche from 1988 at the London Town and Country Club, I
remember this gig being reviewed in Kerrang as an incredible night. I
features some cool live stuff including Queen of the Reich and plenty of
RFO stuff PLUS all of the freshly released Mindcrime
By the way the new Queensryche stuff sounds like it will be pretty cool
(mind you they wouldn't go around posting that it was a sack of cak would
they ??) I've always seen the OM and Empire duo as a creative peak with PL
a close third.

Wow. Lots of stuff coming out in October. The other(s?) being the Rush
live album and do I remember hearing Queensryche putting out (hehe) a new
album then as well? Now, about the title... Does this mean that this is
the ONLY live album we'll EVER get from DT?

I'm not sure what's up with that. I got the same thing when I tried
mailing them from home and work. My only other idea is to call the 1-800
number, but ppl from out of the country can't do that. Oh, well. Scratch
that idea. Sorry about that. I'll see what else I can come up with.

I just receieved a nifty CD in the mail yesterday that I can't force out of
my player...
Creature of Habit: Endangered Species
This is a CD for metal lovers everywhere. These guys recapture the flame of
metal that and keep it alive. It's a very interesting lineup. They're a
new bunch of guys out of Pennsylvania. I wouldn't really call them prog,
but they resemble the old melodic metal of Queensryche (Rage for Order/Op:
Mindcrime era) and Savatage (Edge of Thorns, kinda) only with a heavier
tinge relative to Pantera (Cowboys from Hell type stuff). Not a whole lot
of the Pantera stuff though. I'm a pathetic reviewer and compare things
more than I should,but I really don't think they're a clone or anything like
that. (Even though the singer sounds like he wants to be Geoff Tate
occasionally. What scares me is I think he could.) :)
Track list:
1. Drive By: Your basic guitar driven power metal song. Pantera-ish.
2. Fragile: A sort of Alice in Chains with Bruce Dickinson on vocals sort of
song.
3. Foolish Mortals: The singer (a very versatile guy, he is!) bounces
between high Geoff Tate/Midnight vocals and decends to the angry Cartman
screaming "Bad Kitty!" harsh Satanic Phil Anselmo "FUCK!" vocals. It's
actually a really cool song.
4. Release Me: A very kickass ballad. Reminiscent of "The Killing Words."
5. Shredasaurus Lixx: Yah, it sounds about as cheesy as they come, but it's
actually a pretty decent guitar driven song. After listening to Joe Satch
and DT for all these years, i wouldn't call it spectacular, but the guy
plays can play alot better than me so I can't complain. :)
6. Crying: Another ballad. This song would make Jon Oliva cry. Just
acoustic guitar and vocals. Reminiscent of "Sleep." I love this one.
7. Escape: Starts off with an Indian theme, improvised vocals and tribal
beat, goes into a real cool riff. Sounds like a good Op: Mindcrime style
song. (I hate comparing them like that. i'm not good at describing bands.
The singer's got a damn great voice I can only compare to Geoff's.)
8. Sunshine: Another all acoustic and vocal ballad. Not as good as Crying
but still a great song.
9: Revengeful Hate: Another good power metal song.
10. Last Dance: Opens with a real cool sample. "Oh, you are issuing a
clear invitation to the dance." Breaks into probably the heaviest song on
the CD.
Sorry, I'm not much of a reviewer, but I really recommend this one. Hell,
they sell their CD's for $8.00 (s/h included) so it's a damn good deal for
it. This is something I think that Vinne and Eckie would like. :) Their
website is at http://www.citysounds.com/coh but it's down right now. :\
I'll dig around for a contact email addy and mailing address, though. I
think I have one somewhere... I'll post it when I find it. They're still
an up and coming band, so I don't think you can order them over CDnow or
anything.
Anyway, get this CD!

Hi all,
This may be somewhat off-topic but I'm gonna ask anyway. I recently bought Magellan's "Test Of Wills", and I was wondering if this is the band's first album or if they've done anything before that. Also, I'd like to know if there's a Magellan FAQ, so I can stop asking these stupid questions on the 'Jam.

Just kidding :-)
Progressive rock/metal is a form of music that goes way beyond the usual three minute hitsingles written in a 4/4 time signature. Tempo changes and time sig changes are not the exception, but the rule, usually in one and the same song. Actually, prog is a collection of varying musical styles, all played at the same time, complex song structures being the result of this. Hope this helps you to convert more people into die-hard proggers.

ok, i know this is a little late, but here's the thing about it: since joining the list, i've heard a lot of other (prog, metal, etc) bands being talked about, and before i ever (thank god) stumbled upon DT, i listened mainly to mainstream and more popular and readily available stuff. But now, i figure since i appreciate dt's style a lot more than any of those other bands , i'd start sampling prog and similar-genre bands. so i recently got my hands on a copy of VH III (our library lets you borrow cd's) and i have to say i love it. Before DT, i never did like every song on any cd i owned, but after a mere 2 listens, the few songs i was unsure about, i know have decided i thorougly enjoy. I'm no good at writing reviews, the main point of this was to recommend the cd, but hmm, there are only 3 basically hard or whatever songs out of 12 , and the rest are either really soft, kinda soft, or a mixture of soft and "hard" (forgive my limited vocabulary on this subject). anyway, if you liked old VH , i think you'd like this, and if you didn't, still give it a listen, i think it's worth it.
(can you tell i'm new at long posts?) second point, ok, from small tidbits about the DTFC i've been hearing here and there, i've become quite curious about it. Could someone please tell me what you get in this fan club, or at least direct me to a web site or something that could tell me about it? my gratitude in advance

I lost the originl post, all I read was this reply... but let's go. :-) I have three SX albuns (The Damnation Game, The Divine Wings of Tragedy and Twilight in Olympus), and all of them rock hard. Probably the band I've most benn listening to by now. Let's keep the rest of the comments for below.
> > The lyrics sound like they came out of a Castlevainia video game. They use the > > word, "t'was" on numerous occasions.
And so, what's the problem with that? I pretty much like their lyrics, although sometimes I think they sound dumb also, but what really got me into them is the music behind the lyrics.
> > While Symphony X has technical ability, their use of it is horrible. Michael Romeo > > is superfuckin'fast on his axe. But his articulation, phrasing, and > > accentuation are horrible.
Now I really don't get it. After listening to "The Accolade", "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" and "Through the Looking Glass" (amaaaaaaazing song) can you still repeat that? :-) I'm not trying to comment if Michael uses too much this or that scale, or any other technical thing. My point is that his playing, be it "technically horrible" or not, has a lot of feeling in it, at least in my point of view.

Yeah, I agree, but the rest pays for it. :-)

The only hole I saw in it is that one in the middle of the disc, used to lock it in the jewel case... :-) Of course the album has it's weak points (I love the album, but there are some songs I tend to skip - not that I don't like them, but because I like others so much I keep listening to them over and over and over... :-) )
> > All of the previous is IMHO. > Fair enough, and ditto.
Yeah, never forget he infamous IMHO. :-) (Maybe IM-not so-HO. :-) )

I love Russel Allen's vocals. The guy rules! He have, as you say, that growly voice, but also he can make some wonderful clear singing ("The Divine Wings of Tragedy" comes to mind, also "Through the Looking Glass"). Sometimes he sounds like Ronnie James Dio, sometimes he sounds as nobody else. The guy's incredible. I like the keys a lot too. The way Romeo and Pinella play their instruments together is unique, they really complete each other.
To finish, if you haven't heard them yet, do it yesterday! :-)

A few points to clear up.
1. Lou Gehrig was not technically an athlete (sorry I forgot who posted that) neither was he "Some dead runner...", he was infact a baseball player.
http://www.cmgww.com/baseball/gehrig/photo.html
2. "Its just like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease"
ALS is a fatal neurological disorder, characterised by progressive degeneration of motor cells in the spinal cord and brain. This leads to twitching and cramping of muscles especially in the hands and feet, impairment of limbs, and in advanced stages difficulty in breathing and speech. ALS does not affect intellectual functioning, nor interfere with taste, sight, smell and hearing.
Alzheimer's (or dementia) is a physical disease which causes a progressive decline in the abilities of an individual to remember learn communicate and reason. Often short term memory is lost and the patient is unable to understand simple instuctions and even to remember close relatives. People under 65 can develop the disease.
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the brain where dopamine (neurotransmitter or messenger) producing cells deteriorate causing a lack of dopamine. Dopamine helps nervous system control and muscle activity. Primary symptoms include stiffness, tremours and slow/difficult movements. The patient will often have problems with balance and walking. Parkinsonian symptoms can develop in young people if certain drugs are used. So they are not the same.
