"Test of Wills" is, IMO, the band's finest effort, but it is/was not their
first. There are two predecessors: "Hour of Restoration," which was not only
*their* first album, but the very first Magna Carta release EVER; and
"Impending Ascension," which features a terrific guest performance on drums
by Jethro Tull's Doane Perry. Both are strong, though somewhat uneven,
efforts, but as I said, "Test of Wills" is definitely the band's breakthrough
album.
Oh, and by the way: check out the liner notes on the back of the lyric
booklet, which were written by yours truly. I actually sent them three
paragraphs, but they only had enough space for two. Oh well...I'm still very
proud to be associated, even in a small way, with such a great album.
Incidentally: thanks to whoever sent my Explorers' Club review to "Under a
Cyber Moon." It's a great kick to see my words on the OFFICIAL Dream Theater
Web Site. Makes me feel special somehow. :^)

I'll be methodical about this, and attempt to refute the last statement one song at a time.
Hollow Years - The words to this song may not be the most sophisticated, but I tend to consider the vocal melody and the delivery when I listen to lyrics, because if one aspect really sucks, the others are dragged down with it. That said, I think the lyrics to this songs are appropriate, especially during the bridges and choruses (chorae?). I will admit that this song, lyrically, is the weakest on FII, but it definitely has its strong points.
Peruvian Skies - I spent nine months trying to figure out the words to this song, from the Fix show at Birch Hill until the album was released. I always heard "Vanessa" as "For the last time" because DT had never used a first name so plainly in their lyrics before. When you think about it, it makes sense. That's not what attracted me so much, though; the vocal melody of this song tends to stick in my mind after I hear it. I don't think that's debatable, because it's such a matter of opinion. I don't think the words themselves can be discounted either, though. They're not D&D words, nor are they gloomy grunge words. They are words that portray an ugly scene that occurs in everyday life. As far as their "coolness," they're not bad at all. My favorite line is "I'm the monster you created/In your daddy's name."
I hope I got that right. I haven't looked at the FII lyrics in a while. If I screwed them up, that means I'm very stupid :)
Take Away My Pain - The album version of this song is very different from the version I first heard. The third verse is different, but that's not the important factor here. The perceived quality of this song depends on the style of the music more so than any other DT song in their repertoire. With the proper accompaniment, these words are very powerful. To me, the FII version of this song lacks the proper accompaniment to fully support the emotional impact of the words.
It seems to me that the biggest advance DT has made with FII is the construction of countermelodies, along with the creative way that some melodies are placed against the harmonic progressions. If you don't like the Elton John style of writing that milks the contrast between major and minor chords on the same note, as well as the chromatic use of fully diminished chords, there's not much I can say that will make you like Anna Lee. AL is one of my all-time favorites, though, because I realize that the challenge of Anna Lee isn't playing it - the challenge lies in writing it.

And it's probably the best you'll find (unless you can pick up a second hand copy somewhere) - so buy it and after you've been blown away by it you can get Twilight In Olympus in your next order.... it's that simple :)

Why with the suit? We here on the jam can respect each others right to their own opinion - even if yours is wrong <chuckle, chuckle> Nah, seriously I agree some of the medievel stuff they carry on with is a bit cheesy, but under the minimal theatrics is some awesome prog/power metal tunes - also IMHO of course.

I'll second that - whatever patch he uses for those solos of his, they sound bloody pissweak. Fortunately it's a minor setback however and the rest of the album just glides along with really yummy songs like Through The Looking Glass...
Anyone still sitting on the fence about whether they should get Divine Wings - just do it. If you're into the heavier side of things (Angra, Savatage, Fates, Stratovarius) you can't go wrong. Once again, that is IMHO.

I think it's a great tracklisting. A live album for prog fans. They didn't take :
"Burning My Soul", "The Silent Man", "Anna Lee", "Speak To Me", "Cover My Eyes" "Under A Glass Moon" on the 2CD, but all the great long songs and solo's. THANK YOU MIKE.
The only negative thing is that we won't hear "A Clockwork Orange Theme" and the kick ass "Crack In The Mirror" :-(
Another thing :
I hope DT will NOT PUT "Speak To Me" and "Cover My Eyes" on the next studio CD. I mean, both songs are not bad at all but under DT's standart. Those songs are good as b-sides like "The Way It Used TO Be".
- Speak To Me is an U2 clone. 100 % non prog, terrible druming and alternative sounding guitars. Even KJLB sounds like Bono !
- Cover My Eyes is soundig like an "Extreme" song. Not progressive. I don't like the guitar sounds but the middle part (solo ?!) is great. It reminds me a bit of "Caught In A Web".
Come on people: "Raise The Knife" and "Where Are You Now ?" are 10000 time better than "Speak To Me" or "Cover My Eyes".

I've asked these guestions before and will no doubt have to do so again but I shall persist:
Are there any demos or working versions of tracks from the Awake recording. I realise that they recorded this album very differently from FII but there must be something floating around out there.
Secondly, the only sales figures I have ever heard mentioned with respect to DT were when they were compared with QR's Op Mindcrime sales of Gold in the USA (is this 0.5 million ?? surely not !!) any way what is the deal with all their releases, will elektra be any more forthcoming on this sort of info ?????
I've been sorely tempted to e-mail Mr 420 himself but would only bother him with this sort of 'fan trivia' as a last resort...

If he sang like that in France, I'll use the live CDs as drink coasters.
On an unrelated note, I think Enchant (especially after last night) really deserves to be my favorite band. Aside from being ever so slightly lyrically challenged, they are simply the perfect band. Has anyone ordered 'Time Lost' from Laser's Edge yet? What did it cost you? I'm dying to have it.

I've always felt that James has done better in the studio than he has on the stage. As a frontman, I've always found him rather annoying. His attempts to get the crowd into the performance are usually weak compared to what Mike and JP do. His pronunciation of certain words really drives me crazy sometimes. (A good example of this is when he sings "Seeeeuuuummmtimes" instead of "Soooometimes" [yeah, I'm an english freak, shoot me] ;)
I think the producers really have to push him in the studio to get what sounds good. When they're on the road, James performs how James wants to perform.
