    A good sad song:
A little ditty I wrote myself called "We're Out of Liquor"

    Spooky songs: (serious)
"Raise the Knife" - DT (this better be on the next record!)
"Prelude to Agony" - Type O Negative
       "Jesus Christ Pose" - Soundgarden
I could go on forever, which is a good reason to stop here.

So anyways, I have tons of copies of a compilation album that featured my
old band Inner Sect, and I'd like to give away a couple of them totally
free of charge to you. The only thing I ask in return is that you tell me
what you think of our song. I'll cover shipping, I just wanted to get rid
of a few of these things. Mail me back if you're interested.

And regarding the live album, I'm wondering if they are going to be able
to keep all the little snippets of other people's songs in there, or if
they will forced to take them off. Putting "Have A Cigar" in PS really
was a great idea that I look forward to having a copy of. Ciao.

I'm as happy as Bill Clinton with a pair of ears in his hands!
A few days ago, I had a friend over to visit. I played the LIT video
for him. After I picked him up off the floor, he was VERY interested
in hearing more.... so I played ACOS, LTL, Metro, TOT, and a few
of the MP3 demos on the computer. He's hooked! Last night he wrote
down the concert info on the DP/ELP/DT show scheduled for Aug. 23rd
    here in Minnesota.

As an added bonus, I went to my sister-in-law's house tonight to
look at the brother-in-law's computer, and get a hair cut.
Low and behold, Awake was blaring from his CD player!
When I said "huh" he exposed the jewel cases for I&W and ACOS!!!
About a year ago I gave him a ride about 100 miles up north to visit a
judge about a DWI matter. I played DT the entire way there, and King's X
for the return trip. The first thing he did (after the fines were paid) is start
acquiring DT Cds. Now the prick has better seats than I for the DP/ELP/DT
    show here. Gotta love it!

Hello Fellow Prog Aficianados: I very rarely post to the Jam but read every digest I can fit in timewise (so damn many!). This is where I find a lot of the lastest informaion on both my favorite bands and bands that become my favorite bands. For this I wanted to return the favor to all of you. I received a sample tape of a band from New York called October Thorns claiming to be progressive metal in the vein of Dream Theater, Symphony X and Lemur Voice. Well, damn I had to hear this! Those are some of my favorite bands right tthere. What got me nervous upon receiving the package was the apparent boast of writing two of the songs in two days. That, to me, is just not nearly enought ime to write good progressive music much less what they were claiming to be. I still popped in the tape giving them the benefit of the doubt. Okay, here I am saying I would help these guys after they told me their supposed influences then I hear this... pradon my French - shit! The deal is they are looking for a new singer and were asking me if I could take a listen and think of some guys that would fit the bill. Apparently from listening the first guy got a clue and decided to leave this medicore band at best. So they're looking for someone who sounds somewhat like the first guy who was reminiscent of James LaBrie and Ray Alder to my ears. He was simply singing to overly simplistic and poorly thought out music. So you may think twice before either trying out for the vocal position in this band or going to see them if they ever make it out of their basement. If they do, still claiming to be progressive, then we have a band here in the form of October Thorns that could really leave a bad mark on the good progressive name. Sad indeed... That is all. Continue whatever it was you were doing. NP: Empty Tremor "Apocolokyntosis"

Buma/Stemra is an official government organization. That, combined with their mission (to eradicate bootlegs), makes them evil to me. If you do trade to Holland, don't send a big package.

    > Of course, I'd like to avoid creating problems to my trading friends

It still bothers me that I wasn't able to complete my end of the trade. That is the only time that has happened, and it really bothers me.

Where does that leave DT, I mean - you wouldn't blame JM and DS for being tempted by some bigger money, I know when I was in a band (desperate to make it and never quite achieving it) I would have given a great deal of thought to a better offer. That's not to say that DT aren't getting places but they're not exactly huge.

Not for nuttin' Dave, but I just want to set the record straight..... DT sells AT LEAST 5 times the records King's X does. And I am not just speculating that....I do personally know all 3 KX guys... Mike Portnoy

The other Trev wrote: But if you read liners, notice that only James and JP appear courtesy of East/West America. My guess...Derek's name isn't on the DT contract. Does that make him anymore than a hired gun (who probably gets a cut)?! Just curious. His solo smokes either way!!

Also it says Matt & Matt (Dali's Dilemma) are MC artists. Does that mean we can expect a DD release soon on MC?

On sad songs: Thanks Arash for mentioning instrumentals. To me, these are the saddest, because you can put in your own sad thoughts/memories as the lyrics and they fit perfectly because they are your own. No song has ever made me cry just by listening to it, but only if I was going through something that related closely to the lyrics like hearing a break-up song right after you break-up or something.

It has that distinct Magellan sound. Now can someone please tell me what it is that makes it distinctive? Is it the vocal harmonies, instrumentations, keys and chord progressions or what? I just know there is something in Trent's music that instantly identifies it as such, I just don't know what it is. Same with Spock's Beard.

OK, well I am guilty of not having listened to this CD with headphones yet. I've only had the album for a day, not five weeks like some people. ;)

    > I can't accept that being called laid back, because I don't know of > another drummer who could write that, and I only know of a handful who I > think would have a prayer at playing it. I'm not offering this as the "If it's > so laid back, why don't you do better" argument... I'm saying "Try to play > this stuff." I know from the little bit of drums I've banged upon that > this is inhuman.

Well, some of the stuff (a lot) is technically difficult, I will give you that, in a performance standpoint, but I guess I am more interested in drum pyrotechnics ala Mike Portnoy, who is quite a bit flashier in his drum parts. I'm not trying to compare the two, and say one is better than the other, but this was really Bozzio's chance to shine, in the context of a progressive shred-fest, and I feel a little jipped, that's all. All of the above statements were all IMO of course.

The reason could also be that he was sick during the tour. I heard that some nights, his neck was really swolen and stuff. After the show in Ft. Worth, he got on the bus and went to sleep while every one else was signing autographs.

Yeah, that's right, I went to a Firehouse concert last night. It was part of the "Rock Never Stops Tour" including Quiet Riot, Slaughter, L.A. Guns and Warrant, but all the bands don't play at the same concerts. The show was great. Brought back alot of memories from the early 90s. This was the setlist:

Overnight Sensation (my favorite off that album) All She Wrote (the classic, still just as good) When I Look Into Your Eyes Love of a Lifetime Lover's Lane - drum solo (basic metal drum solo) Reach for the Sky Hold the Dream (I love this song, sounded great live too) Here for You Acid Rain (new album: played it 3 times, they were filming footage for a video) Don't Walk Away - bluesy guitar solo Hold You Fire Shake and Tumble Get Ready (new album)

It was awesome, the guitarist, Bill Leverty and the drummer, Michael Foster are both from Richmond, VA. They had a great time, got to talk to them after the show and got my Firehouse CD signed. All in all, it was a great trip back to "classic" metal.
