    Ok guys,

Here are some things I've thought about during this assault on LTE
(I dunno wether any of this is *absolute* fact though as I wasnt there
of course for any of these).............

-All the old Rush records that were written on the road and recorded in
about a week's time (Alex has said in Guitar World that the 'La Villa
Strangiato' solo was all the same take).

-Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independance in one sitting
(I know, obviously not the first sitting but still...).

-When Yes entered the studio to record _Close to the Edge_, about all
they had was the guitar riff, Wakeman's solo (which was originally a
guitar solo) and a rough draft of the lyrics. Once in the studio, they
used the write-as-you-go approach, basically writing the whole tune
right there as the reels were spinning. Today, 26 years later, the song
*still* has as much, if not more meaning that when it was initially
    recorded.

So what we've got here is CttE, which contains a lasting quality
partially due to its being thrown down in a short amount of time, but
LTE lacking a lasting quality due to the short amount of time in which
it was recorded!? LOL! This whole discussion on LTE has just cracked
me up the past few days, a big rofl! to all you guys. I suppose that
according to all the ytsejammers, a minimum amount of physical time
*must* be spent on a song for it to have a lasting impact. I can just
picture the conversation now, while DT is in the studio recording the
    next album........

Kevin Shirley: Ok guys, we're just about done with Met2, that went
    surprisingly fast.......
MP: Nono Kev, I read on the ytsejam the other day that we have to spend
a pre-approved amount of time on this tune so that it has enuff
    sustaining qualities for them.

    Sick, eh!?

Feeling the flamers hit the reply button,
    -Nate

Means that I am trying to sell a whole army of engl stuff but nobody interested. Ain't life a bitch? Besides, does anybody know bad things about Montclair,NJ, apart from the ripper, the war, KKK and what not a joke you might come up with?? Maybe I'll live there for a year.

The scene is Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI, right on the water of Newport Harbor. It's around 90F outside making for a crowded day in a resort town such as this.... WOO HOO!!! A perfect day to shred :)

Ok, it turned out to be $32 the day of the show ($15 in advance), plus $6 for parking. Newport is all about money, but Steve Morse is all about shred :), so it didn't matter to me if anything else was worth listening to.

They had least 6 bands each on two different stages over the course of the day, tents set up with clinics, a place to register to win a Shelby Mustang :), places to check out the latest models of Gibson, HMV had a tent set up. We noticed Petrucci coming in at #98, and figured that once you look at the rest of the list, that #100 was the best, and so JP didn't do all that bad. What a joke!! We laughed, didn't buy anything, and proceeded to the porta-potties :)

We had no idea when Steve was going on stage, so we got there early. Turns out he's not going on for 3 hours, so we check out some of the other bands, the clinics, and walk around the Harbor. My buddy Ed was a little disappointed that there was no beer available inside the place. He disappeared on several occasions, we can only surmise to double-check. His pain was only intensified by this woman who was completely faced, and was just so proud that her 9 year old daughter knew how to use a cell phone, as she repeatedly called her on it. Poor Ed :) I pacified him with a Lemonade...

Steve is due up after James Cotton (yeah, there was everything from bluegrass, to blues, to jazz, to latin, Nils Lofgren, Bo Diddley, you name it). The place is getting anxious to rock, even though it took only 15 minutes to set up in between acts. You could hear people screaming "Dixie Dregs" or "Deep Purple" as the shred was imminent. Steve and his knee cap length blonde hair come on stage to an immediate standing ovation. He announces Dave LaRue on Bass and Dave Dicenso on Drums.

    WAIT!

Dave Dicenso from the Jon Finn Group? I run to the tent selling summer clothes, purchase a clean pair of shorts and return, all within 90 seconds :) Ok, so far this will be my second time having seen Steve Morse Band and I have not, as yet, seen Van Romaine on drums. Didn't matter, though :)

Dave was out of his tree!! Anyone going to the Hampton Beach DT show on the 4th will get a wonderfull treat as the Jon Finn Group are opening for them. Check out what Dave can do on a small KIT! He came out afterwards to talk with the plebians. Dave rehearsed the gig the night before with the other two! How the heck did he nail this stuff down so well in ONE NIGHT???????????? I guess that's why he's one of the most sought after session players in the NorthEast. DTC: I saw a couple of people turn around and smile when I asked about JFG opening for Dream Theater next week :)

I don't do setlists. They played many favorites including Cruise Control, Dreamland, Foreign Exchange. Steve and Dave LaRue did a Handel influenced tune (the same one they did at the Berklee gig) where they stand side by side and give a live clinic on scales. LaRue is a fucking monster on bass! He's looking for something to rest his left leg on, as he wants to use ensure correct form on the bass. The song should be named shredstahpuntal! Even got the 80 year olds applauding :) Stress Fest stood me on my feet! Great combination of Balls 'N Chunk, Shred, Emotion, and Chops!

For those of you planning on leaving a DT/ELP/DP show after DT finishes, you are a ytsefool! You'll be missing Morse on guitar, in case you didn't know that he's playing with DP. The rest remain misled....

Anathema Marie Alberghetti lightly tosses up an afternoon meal containing this: >Does anyone else agree with the thought that LTE just seems like everyone >is trying to play louder and faster than everyone else. Like a >competition.

Uh, no, that would be the ytsejam mailing list, where everyone thinks it's a competition for whose opinion is louder.

    Don't mind if I do :)

Anyone who thinks the guitar solo during LTE's "Kindred Spirits" or most of the guitar on "Univsersal Mind" lacks emotion, should have their heads lobotomized, because it was clearly a failed medical experiment leaving it in :) If monkeys can water ski, surely there are other members of the class of non-human primates who could benefit from a transplant :)

Why even bring up the fact that it supposedly lacks enough of the things you declare would be in there when you knew from (at least) the liner notes that it only took a week for them to make the disc? "We would have made it to the show on time, if only we weren't late" :) At 00:37 of UM, JP draws about as much of that wah pedal as he can before the thing caught on fire! Go back and listen to JP at 1:13-1:25 of UM and shut yer trap :) Must he spontaneously combust before you decide he's given enough of himself in terms of emotion?

Listen up, superlative BOYEEEES, I hope they take a mere afternoon to make LTE2, just for you :) Face it, Korg, you're pissed cuz you know that Kurzweil is a vastly superior keyboard to the Casio^H^H^H^H^HKorg. Deal with the fact that you made a serious financial blunder in your purchase, and move on already! No need to insult your parents, the mistake was obviously influenced by environment. :):):):):):)

Come back when you can spontanesouly jam for over 28 minutes and keep from tripping over yourself, let alone stay on key/beat. Till then, sit the fook back down :)

Try Space Dye-Vest or Wait For Sleep. Surrounded's not too hard either. I, for one, never could learn anything off Awake (and I mean ANYTHING). The keyboards are just different and not so clear. This album has some real diffecult and unusual chord progressions...

About your first topic - It really pisses me that no one can teach you how to play the keys. I mean you learn classical piano or jazz piano, but if you wanna learn how to play a Rhodes, Rock Hammonds, Jazz Hammonds (and those two approaches to playing the Hammond are very different) or just play synths (like lead stuff), you have to buy tons of CDs and listen to them a lot and play along.

    Any comments from other keyists?

    Cheers,

Well, now that I'm past my initial first response of being pissed at finally getting it in over 6 months with cracked jewel cases and a crinkled liner page... I put it in the CD player.

DAMN!!!! This CD set is excellent!!!! I haven't noticed any "hiss" as other people have mentioned (other than usual bootleg "hiss")...except for the "demo"-type stuff on the very last 2 tracks of disc 2.

The Nightmare Cinema tracks are GREAT!!! I'm listening to Scarred right now, and I am blown away. God these guys are fuckin' unbelievabler, and this is a great boot. This (Streams of Consciousness) and "Fasten Your Seatbelts" are a great capturing of the FII tour...

Believe me, if you want a truly excellent bootleg from the FII tour, then try to get your hands on "Ancienne Belgique". The sound quality is so much better than that of SoC and FYS -- not to mention the really professional layout that the bootleg maker put. Not even the slightest click and no hiss throughout the whole bootleg.

The setlist is good also (not as great as the setlist from Tokyo, Jan. 16th, 1998), but the sound is good. And the Tokyo boot is also incredible. "Speak to Me", "You Not Me", "Trial of Tears", "Scarred", Nightmare Cinema and Nicky Lemmons are present in this bootleg.

Also worth noting is the Chicago (11/1/97) bootleg... Incredible energy there...

If you can find them, but them. If not, trade them. :-)

Hi, "If the patient feels dizzy, feels all his joints and has shivers or spasms of cold, he should go to bed immediately. If he can sleep, allright. If he wakes up at night still not feeling better, he should call no Dr. but act according to the following instructions: -increase the temperature of the room he's in -put on a sweater and socks -pull the sheets up to the head This will increase the body temperature. Now the patient has to sing (aka drum, play keys or guitar) through at least 3 Dream Theater songs, which will increase body heat even more, since every fan gets hot on DT. After 15 minutes of sweating the patient should change his T and repeat the actions, but longer (one might want to try at least ACOS) until he is really wet. After that it should be better and the patient should change the T again, eventually the blanket and let himself cool out again. Just remember to keep the kidneys covered. "

Unfortunately one gets very awake by this, so here I am sitting at 2.30 a.m. But I am clear again though and happy that DT once again saved my life.

Does anybody know a country song called "Nothing but a campfire tale"? I saw it once on Oprah (OH, fuck those German kids) and really liked.

I am probably the only person who thinks this.. but "Lightning Crashes" by Live is a very nice emotional song from the 90s. I don't know how many people actually like "Live", but despite their alternative label, they are a very real band with some great music.

Which leads me to another random thought - man I am gong to miss the music fo the Northeast US... I am 6 hours from the hometown of RUSH, 1 hour from both Live and DT, 8 hours from Phish (YES I admit to liking Phish!), 1 hour from the Machine. Damn. I hope I dont get stuck in bumblef**k where I get to see these bands like once a decade as opposed to 5 times a year!

Of course, right now Ive been listening to "Wake of Magellan" over and over and over and over again. Especially "Morning Sun". Now thats an incredible song!!!

and with the Empty TremorT song.. yeah.. I've noticed a lot of DT in there. But then again.. FII has a lot of other musicians work in there.. I never know what to think. It is the very rare band that invents its OWN music. Most music builds off of other music, putting the different ideas together in ways that actually define a new sound.

What do you guys think about this point? I am always in an internal debate over the validity of using someone else's riff in a song., such as "Tom Sawyer" in New Millenium, Metropolis 1 in the ET song, etc etc.

A contiunace of the sick and demented thought . . .

Sad songs are written by everyone, I agree, and yes, some do still have the emotion that whole ALBUMS used to have. My personal favorite . . Black Sabbath's Mob Rules. It has a song for every mood. Personally, this is the pinnacle (sp?) of Emotional music. Leave Alanis at home (or in your trash) leave you grunge-era angst rock in the blender, and give me that kind of emotion. That is what I really mean. I should have clarified. You can all beat me with soggy lasagna noodles later. As far as the KevMo Download goes, let me know where to get it, and I will.
