    Hello, fellow jammers.

You might try downloading the Media Wizard.(use www.download.com to find it) It's a really nice programm for playing all audio and video-files. It also features convertion from CD-track to MP3 or WAV and conversion from WAV to MP3 and vice versa. Only one minor problem: you can use this shareware-version for no longer than 20 days.
Does anyone know how to crack it?? Please male me if you know.
Oh yeah, my apologies to the people who do put 'correct' transcriptions for bass on the net. Last time I didn't look good enough. Maybe there will come some transcriptions of my own, if they are approved by the manager of the UACM-site.

    Commenting on many recent posts...

    "THE UNKNOWN KICKASS SONG"
I thought that they had never recorded a demo of Metropolis II. If that's
correct, then whoever performed this did a damn good job of imitating Dream
Theater! Specifically, the guitar and drums remind me *a lot* of John and
Mike. I can't get a feel for the keyboards or the If it *is* actually
Dream Theater, it sounds too disorganized for my taste, but I'm sure that
will change as time goes on. (It did for A Change of Seasons.) Pretty
creative writing, and amazing performances as usual.

Could this be part of the Explorers Club CD? Has anyone out there heard
both the Explorers Club CD and this new song?

    CREED
I saw them in concert last week, and thought that they put on a fairly good
show. If you're thinking about seeing them live, do so. (On the other
hand, the opening acts -- The Ghandarvas and Fuel -- SUCKED. Next time
I'll arrive late.) Specifically, every time I listen to them, the drumming
stands out. I've heard "Torn" on the radio about five times today, and the
drumming somewhat reminds me of Mike Portnoy's. (It may help that he uses
some of the same equipment.) He seems to have a lot of talent and a very
crisp, precise sound. Do any of the rest of you think this way?

    DRUM CLINICS
I am unfamiliar with how these work, and I've got a few questions. They
take place at the music stores which sponsor them, right? How early does
one need to arrive to get a good seat? People SIT in CHAIRS at these
things? <g> And the staff allows you to record it? Even with a camcorder?
How long does the clinic last? Does Mike stay and chat individually after
    the clinic?

    SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
I agree with Mike Bahr. So far, this movie is the best of the year. I saw
it last night and am probably going back tonight. I'm not a big fan of war
movies, but this isn't just any war movie. It reminds me a lot of Empire
of the Sun, the only other "war movie" I really liked. You should all go
    see this movie. Right now.

If so, visit the Ultimate Band List's Dream Theater card
a buncha times a day for the next week or so. This week,
Dream Theater is at the number one spot in their top 100
but I'm sure we can get it in the top 10, next week. ;-)

The URL for their Dream Theater card is :

Or even better, go to UACM and click on the big UBL logo

If we manage to get Dream Theater up there, we could try
it again when the live double album gets released... :)
We could do the same thing with *other* websites to make
sure Dream Theater gets the attention they deserve, once
the album hits the stores. Just a thought...

nice subject line , eh? anyway, i was just listening to awake, and since i've
been getting more into drumming and hoping my folks'll get my a set soon, i'm
14 (i'm sure you can imagine how annoying it is trying to learn on my legs,
and painful...) and i noticed a similarity between them that i 'm not sure
anyone has before. you see, whenever someone brot it up, i by assumption, thot
they ment the keyboard parts, both seeming to be snippets of SDV. but i found
a new common bond between the two, if not new to all of you, at least new to
me: the part from 2:20-2:25 in The Mirror (right before "Hypocrite, how could
you be so cruel??") and 5:08-5:13 in Lie (right before the aforementioned
    keyboard part)
    so there you go
flame if you must, but if this post wasn't at least informative, than i'm sure
it was highly entertaining, as is every oppurtunity to feast upon my unique
writing style (look ma! no grammar!)

Also, what other singles were there for Awake besides Lie with To Live
Forever, Another Day, and Space Dye Vest, and The Silent Man with TTT remix
    and Eve?
Secondly, can anyone name all the songs that didn't get on Falling Into

Metropolis Pt. II, but I forgot the others.

hahah, no pun intended i assume? Well, i would guess maybe time. It takes
time to prepare alive cd - mike keeps mentioning that he's working on it
all this time. in the case of a boot, it's some dude gathering the
material, mixing, mastering, doing the graphics, getting the liners
printed, and whatnot. He doesn't have normal band duties to fulfill. The
band, on the other hand, does. :) And i doubt they want to spend their
little free time preparing CDs. Anyways, that's my answer. Dunno if that's
why they do it, but that's what i think. Moo.

the first battle that the Scots won was at Stirling Bridge. in
the real battle, the bridge was important, since Wallace waited
to attack the english until half their forces were over the
bridge, thus ensuring he would face only half the english heavy
cavalry instead of facing all of them. the bridge itself got
clogged with dead and the rest of the english forces could not
cross over, the Scots crushed the isolated part, and then
    routed the remainder.

there was no bridge in the first battle in the movie. it was a
fun movie, but i don't think it was really accurate.

check my home page for a link to a very cool William Wallace
page in Scotland that has info on the real Wallace, some other
thigns in the movie that were hollywood-ized, and info on a
very interesting new biography of Wallace.

Perhaps I'm a bit behind here, as I have yet to read the 3 latest jams, but... I think that LTE can be summed up pretty well by two of our favorite things strung together, namely "musical masturbation." :) Now, the thing that sets LTE apart from your typical shred-session (read: Yngwie (sp?) Malmsteen guitars) is that to these four guys, the thing that pleases them the most is music with depth. Now, isn't that what MM really is? Playing what makes you happy? Granted, 3-Minute Warning may not be the most "deep" song ever written, but for a 30-minute off the cuff jam session, I think it's damn impressive. Not only from a technical standpoint, but even the fact that there ARE certainly distinguishable high and low emotional points. THAT's impressive. To anyone else who may argue that point with me, I suggest that you give a careful listen to Osmosis and Point of Grace, and even (gasp!) certain sections of Freedom of Speech. Oddly enough, I think that one of the most intense emotional parts of the song is right where the key solo leads out of the guitar shred part. Those of you who listen to that song non-stop (like me) know what I'm talking about. Just my 2 cents (maybe 3) on LTE.

The first DT song I ever learned to play (drums) was Another Day. Not too hard, except it took me a while to figure out that the sixteenth notes actually alternate between the ride and hi-hat. But the real kicker was learning "Surrounded." I remember trying to get the "pre-verse" down and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why I was getting off beat. it thought I was going crazy, until a friend and I figured out that it was actually in 9/8. That was only the first hurdle. Many an afternoon were spent dissecting the song in 30 second installments until I could nail the entire thing. What an accomplishment that was! I'll say this for learning to play DT: it makes you a better musician. Granted that anytime you learn a new song by any artist you're probably becoming a better player, but with DT you can actually FEEL yourself getting better. Or at least I can.

    Somebody wrote:

As much as I loved Extreme, I always thought Paul sucked. Not that he was terrible, but I found his playing to be very unimaginative. Mangini, on the other hand, is a fucking monster and should have been with them from the start.

I think this is why he left Extreme.

I thought he left Extreme to get into the business end of the industry.

Nuno actually sequenced the drum part on Cupids dead so that it was > the way he wanted it. This is probably why Extreme never played Cupid's dead > live while Paul was the drummer.

I don't know about the sequencing on Cupid's Dead, but I know for a fact they played it live w/ Paul. In fact, I have a show they did in London on the III Sides tour where they not only play the song, but insert serveral horn jams, a drum solo, and some percussion accompaniment. The whole song lasts for about 17 minutes.

I would suggest visiting the CA one before committing. The neighborhood is...interesting.

Created during a sick and twisted mood . . .

I've noticed something in todays music. The true sad and depressing song has gone by the wayside. What ever hapened to them? I mean, when i was in the right mood, I could listen to songs like that for hours. I still do, as a matter of fact. yes, there are sad song sout today, but to me, they don't seem to have the same kind of emotion that they used to have. I don't know, i could be wrong. I'm only human, and god does that depress me.
