Anybody who disagrees needs to take a week out of their summer and travel
to Berklee for the summer guitar sessions. Sit in Joe's class and you will
see why. However, even Joe admits that there are random guys all over the
world who could be faster than he, but Joe will also play an Impelliteri or
Yngwie solo note for note to show he's faster than anybody YOU'VE heard
about. I remember one of our classes had a long discussion about all the
players that have been brought on this list in this discussion. Buckethead,
Michael Angelo, Impelliterri, Gilbert, all of them were compared. But none
could top the mighty Stump. :)
Oh by the way, after you take Joe's class. Go to Jon Finn's class where
you'll learn something called DYNAMICS. Why don't we ever have
conversations about that on this list??

Greetings, fellow Ytsejammers!
In YTSEJAM Digest #3590, DragynLMC3 (Lisa) asked the $64 question:
<< I was thinking (oh ow, that hurt) and I was just wondering that if there
was no DT (prog gods forbid) what would you have in your 10 CD player? (i do
not have one, but this is after all just pretend...no more than 10 we don't
want to scare people now with all your CDs) >>
I'm thinking (OW! Hey, that *does* hurt!) that I'd want to have--AT
LEAST--some Rush, some Allan Holdsworth, some Yes, some Steve Morse/Dixie
Dregs, some Kansas, some Genesis, some ELP, some King Crimson, some fusion
(maybe Brand X, maybe some Mahavishnu Orchestra, maybe some Return to Forever,
maybe some Boud Deun, maybe some Jean-Luc Ponty or Shawn Lane), and at least
one Shrapnel or Magna Carta or Legato release (but by whom? Greg Howe? Tony
MacAlpine? Jason Becker? Cairo? Lemur Voice? Shadow Gallery? Altura?
Brett Garsed & T.J. Helmerich?). Oh, and maybe some Black Sabbath or
Marillion or Fates Warning or Rainbow or Twelfth Night or Threshold or Spock's
Beard or Echolyn or Symphony X or Gentle Giant or UK...?
You know, this would be so much easier if I only owned ten CDs. *sigh*
That's probably more than ten, but I'm not sure. My head hurts too much to
count now. Where's the Tylenol? OW!

FYI-That's the Berks Jazzfest, taking place in Reading, PA. It's named after
Berks County, where I grew up. I don't live there anymore, actually I live almost a
thousand miles from there; so obviously I won't be going. For all the Bela Fleck
fans on the Jam, he and the Tones will be playing a Reading 250th anniversary show

So top 10 lists are bogus (especially when people posting obviously don't know
how to count to ten!), but I think it is good to sit back once in a while and
think about what you really like and post. Besides, I've already seen a
couple I can't wait to get because of repeated Top 10 postings. I've been
waiting for Impulse music to send me my damn Savatage "Wake of Magellan"
forever now!!! And now that I see it repeatedly posted, it only makes it
harder to wait. I had also given up on Megadeth's CW but witht he
comparison's to Rust, I may have to check it out! Okay here it goes, I will
preface wtih saying #1 doesn't mean it is my very favorite and so on.
1 Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
2 Magellan - Impending Ascension
3 Beatles - Revolver
4 Craig Goldy - Insufficient Therapy
5 Haji's Kitchen - self titled
6 Genesis - Trick of the Tail
7 Tony MacAlpine - Maximum Security
8 Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
9 Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
10 Savatage - Streets
10 Seal - Seal (2nd album)
10 Wolfgang A. Mozart - Requiem
10 Adam Sandler - They're All Gonna Laugh at You
10 Dokken - Back for the Attack (Hearing "Mr. Scarry" made me go buy a
guitar)
10 Liquid Tension Experiment (is that cheating?)
Whew, that was harder than I thought. Never thought I would be able to narrow
it down to 10. Oh yeah, and if I couldn't have Dream Theater, this band
called Majesty has some pretty cool stuff too.

I agree. I was referring to the "Gee... I'm tired" kind. The "shreddaz" who
actually tire out, as in have to put their pick down, massage their hand,
massage their shoulder, drink some Gatorade, etc. Some choose to hold their
breath while playing and tense up their arm so that the picking stems from the
whole arm shaking instead of a controlled hand motion. These are the sort of
people who can't masturbate for longer than thirty seconds, either. It's all
in the technique! Loosen up! Stop making your entire arm rigid! Recognize the
flexability of the wrist! You'll be more satisfied, and not just with your
guitar playing!
Boy, what a foul thing to say. (punches self)
What I MEANT to say was that I was referring to the shreddaz who mentally bug
out after fast passages with that "I can't play any more notes" attitude, i.e.
"We usually don't play that song until last because I can't make it past the
solo blah blah blah." Usually it's due to lack of warming up, but there are
guitarists whom I have patiently listened to who crash and burn after playing
fast for too long, be it thirty seconds or two minutes of chromatic drills. Be
the limitations physical or mental, it's still amusing to see someone who can
play faster than you for a minute or so, then promptly devolves into a numb
sponge of shred inactivity.
Once I figured out that I didn't need to tense up my entire upper torso
(including the eyebrow muscles) to play fast, and discovered that I could
actually play the guitar from the elbows-down, from out of nowhere I suddenly
had the stamina to practice for longer than an hour. Clarified?
> I have never met someone who has practiced speed fundamentals
> and not become a reasonably fast player.
This issue also depends on one's standard of speed. Mine has changed several
times over the years, usually whenever I hear a level of playing I've never
heard before. "Whoah, I thought THAT dude was fast...but THIS dude...THIS DUDE
IS FAST." Your definition of "reasonably fast" just might be Kirk Hammett,
whereas mine might be Mr. Malmsteen himself. Do you base the definition of
"reasonably" on what YOU can do, or by how many other guitarists can play at
that level? Is that standard set by Shrapnel Records? Is "reasonable" defined
by what the individual is "satisfied" with? Or by the amalgam of what is
considered fast playing in the world of guitar?
> Believe it. Everyone who practices the right things can learn to play fast
> in one way or another.
This is true as well. When I said "NOT EVERYONE CAN PLAY FAST" I was referring
to the mental aspects as well as the physical. Practicing complacency is much
harder than practicing arpeggios, but both are necessary to succeed. The
defeat usually lies within the mind. Occasionally there are physical
limitations, such as low manual dexterity. More often than that are people who
just can't think that fast, and they will actually say "I can't think that
fast, my ears can't keep up with that stuff, etc." Sometimes they break free,
sometimes their fear confines them. It is a lack of belief in oneself that
keeps one from true shredding. Even those who believe in themselves can
sometimes get carried away and begin believing in themselves TOO well,
becoming impatient with their slow progress, becoming angered, and finally
giving up, frustrated and cursed to remain at 80% of their full potential.
Belief in oneself is not enough; patience must follow, for without time
nothing can develop.
Now, go home and practice. Patiently. And warm-up first. And stop doing that.
Dream Theater rules.
Bafu Vai
p.s. this must be boring the hell out of the non-guitarists.

Subject: Economy Picking
Message-ID: <fa905ddf.34fa47da@aol.com>
Now let me start off with - am I the fastest guitar player on the planet? No.
Am I close? Not even. So don't take the following as anything but a personal
experience with guitar technique.
I noticed that Alternate Picking was #2 in what is already an infamous list (I
liked the breakdown personally). Any guitarist should be able to play atleast
with some degree of accuracy and fluidity, all techniques. I usually just
leave it as legato and staccato, because everything else (besides
experimental) is just a division of these two effects. Anybody who excels in
one and can't execute the other is just a circus show. Well, I take that
back. I lean more towards guitarist needs help if they turn licks all legato
because their staccato is poor, and vice versa. It is like Petrucci so
eloquently put: The expression thing is kind of blown if the technique isn't
there to express yourself (that's a paraphrase, don't want to go find the
actual issue and quote).
But where was Economy Picking in the list? For a quick reference, this is
economy picking (because sometimes the term has been bastardized)
---------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------6--7--9--10------------------------
-------------6--7--8-----------------------------------------
--5--7--8----------------------------------------------------
/\ \/ /\ /\ \/ /\ /\ \/ /\ \/
/\ = downstroke (as in towards the ground)
\/ = upstroke (as towards the ceiling)
Sorry, if it seems so "trivial" to do this, but just because you love Dream
Theater, doesn't mean everyone is familiar with some guitar jargon, even
guitarist.
The Frank Gambale method!!!
This is how I started playing when I first picked up the guitar (I also
started with a Dunlop Jazz III pick), but then I took lessons and my stupid
guitar teacher told me I should pick everything Alternate Picking and get rid
of the tiny little pick! My first year I progressed quickly, but I could
never play as quickly or as cleanly as I wanted to. Then I went on for a
couple years with little to no progress until I got to MI. Then my roommate
from New Hampshire said I picked funny (Alternate Picking) he showed me
economy picking, where I responded "That's how I started playing, but was told
I would never be fast this way." Well, I started to revert back to economy
picking, bought some Jazz III picks, and within a matter of a month I was
playing much, much faster and cleaner. I had also noticed that with the
economy of motion, I felt like wasn't even working hard. I could play for as
long as I wanted with no fatigue. It just didn't feel like I was struggling
anymore!
So the point(s) I am trying to make is 1) Economy Picking was left off and 2)
Alternate Picking is just as valid, but play however you feel natural (as long
as you don't forget dynamics!) is the best way of picking. If it feels
natural to you, odds are you will struggle with it less later on.
Economy Picking seems to be the minority compared to Alternate Picking. In a
sense Economy Picking just combines Sweep and Alternate Picking, so it's like
two techniques in one. Does anybody else Economy Pick? I don't switch
between Economy and Alternate picking because that just makes both of them
sound sloppy because I could never feel comfortable doing both. So I kinda
threw Alternate Picking out the window. My own personal shortcoming, I'll get
over it.

I should have made myself more clear. That was my ranking of how
techniques are respected and acknowledged. Sweeping and 8 finger
tapping are, without a doubt, the fastest non-power-drill way to play
the guitar. But at maximum speeds, 8 finger tapping becomes
difficult with respect of having anything else to play, and sweeping
is usually limited to chord tones, and sometimes you want to play
parts of scales as well. I am aware, of course, of Stump and
Gambale's alternative picking method that applies a slight bit of
sweeping technique to alternate picking... I just don't care to
practice it, because I'm not hurting for that extra 15 BPM in my
playing... I'd rather just work on getting everything clean and
smooth.
