i must agree with Chris Ptacek on the Alternate picking, i used to do this
"Economy Picking" without really noticing, i always thought i was alternate
picking all the way, till i watched a paul gilbert video and actually paid
attention to my right hand more, and the fast runs i was attempting, the
problems were always at the parts where i would sweep pick between the strings
instead of alternating when i should, so i sat down and started practicing
complete alternate picking for hours, and in a few weeks i could play a lot
faster without the problems i was having before, it took a while to get used
to because i played the other way for years, but it was well worth it.
also, personally i have always used Dunlop Jazz III's as well, i love the
sharp edge, and when i switch to another pick i feel weird and it seems harder
to play, but its probably just because i'm used to the shape

hmm, i'm gonna have to study my air guitar picking technique, it could prove
helpful, i don't air guitar as much as i air drum though. i'm an awesome air
drummer, you should see my kit, it has everything, its fuckin huge...
but everything is really close together, maybe thats why i suck at real
drums.. hmm.. maybe i should try spacing out my air drum kit, its kinda hard
to with the size of my steering wheel though..

There are a few reasons I will skip a post, and the subject isn't
necessarily one of them.
1) The From: Line. If I see a post from someone who consistantly posts
crap, or incoherent nonsense, or has no grasp of the concepts of grammar,
sarcasm, or intelligent conversation, I will skip it. If I see a post
from someone that I know is currently in a personal flame war that should
be in private email, or who is carrying on about a thread I wish would
die, I will skip it (with the exception of certain people whom I enjoy
reading retorts from).
2) The Subject: Line. If it refers to a thread I don't want to read, I
will skip it. Re: Ytsejam #xxxx does not count here. I usually will at
least skim those posts. A good example would be the current Yngwie
thread, which I lost interest in before it even started, since in my
opinion Yngwie is a good player whose songs are infected with cheese
that's been fermenting since the 1980s.
3) The Appearance. If the post contains any of the following I will
usually skip it: double spacing <ahem, Mr Hough>, HTML code, MIME encoded
sections, poor cut and paste jobs.
4) The Content. This consists of a brief scan of the text to determine if
the subject matter is worth reading.
There are other influences and exceptions of course, but those are the
main ones. The point being that most people I know don't give a crap
about the subject line as much as they do about other factors.

Shawn Malone has a solo CD out called Cortlandt. It's not metal. Sean
Reinert helps out on drums.
I've also heard news of a new band with Shawn and Sean, featuring
appearances by John Myung, but for the life of me I can't remember the
name of the band or the CD or release date.
5) anacrusis' screams and whispers is really really really underrated.
Screams and Whispers is the only Anacrusis CD I have, and it rocks. I'll
probably end up getting more eventually, but I can't afford it right now.
They're a local band (St. Louis) that unfortunately broke up a while back.
I can't say that the CD is underrated, seeing as how I never heard anyone
rate it in the first place, but it's definately a good buy.

If Dream Theater did not exist, then the Ytsejam would not exist.
Therefore you would most likely not know any of us or have any way of
reaching us in such a public forum. Therefore no one here should answer
your question on the list, because if Dream Theater did not exist, none of
us would know you asked the question.
As for what CDs I'd listen to, check the web page. My whole collection is
in constant rotation.

Chris Ptacek aka someone@prognosis.com stated:
>See, I think that it's imperative to start someone off on Alternate
>picking, because it tends to lead the player to better timing.
I can agree with this statement (the part that alternate picking lends toward
better timing - at first) It makes your hand like a metronome. In fact, my
first issue when going back with Economy Picking was timing. With Alternate
Picking, I was at the point where I could double just about anything I played
and have it sound uncannily like the original (timing is always the issue when
it comes to doubling). When I switched back to Economy Picking, I had to work
on timing again. But with Alternate Picking, it had seemed no matter how hard
I worked on speed I was at my limit!!!!! With Economy, I could increase my
limit and all I had to do was reconfigure my brain so it didn't depend on the
constant up/down motion for timing. The very first thing I did was play
everything starting with an upstroke because I had realized that I had become
dependent on starting with a downstroke. Next was the simple practice of the
gallop rhythm ( Think Iron Maiden). Once the timing was down on that, I could
do that type of rhythm so much faster. And in a sense, my timing improved
because I didn't have to do two downstrokes in a row (this isn't straight
alternate picking, but most alternate pickers play gallops /\ \/ /\ /\ \/
/\ instead of /\ \/ /\ \/ /\ \/ atleast while on the same string).
With these two basic barriers, the timing quickly came to me. As far as the
single note string thing, that was actually always my strong point. My
problem was this
-----------12---------------------
-----15---------------------------
/\ \/
It just seemed like a wasted (and hard, for me) motion. I look at it like
this. The two strings are car doors. Is it easier to be inside the car
(between the two strings) and touch the left then right door, or is it easier
to outside the car (outside the two strings) and tought the left then right
door. If you were outside the car, you would have to run around the car to
hit the other door. That's how I felt. I had to jump over the next string to
hit it.
So now depending on where my picking happens to be at
1) If the last stroke I hit the 15th Fret at was a downstroke, I would play
it like
-----------12---------------------
-----15---------------------------
/\ /\
2) If the last stroke I hit the 15th Fret at was an upstroke, I would play
it like
-----------12---------------------
-----15---------------------------
\/ /\
Those are my two options. I don't arrange notes so I have two downstrokes or
upstrokes in a row, that is unmusical. Besides, how can you improv if you
have to actually think aobut arranging notes on strings. I want to think
about the notes, not the technique.
It's a simple concept. If I am going to a higher pitched string, I always hit
the first note with a downstroke. If I am going to a lower pitched string, I
always hit the first note with an upstroke. The only time I think about
whether I am going to start with an upstroke or a downstoke is if I am not
improvising and have had time to think which helps me perform it better.
Hey, I like that you said about Economy pickers sounding snakey. I don't know
what you mean by this, but I always thought that I like players that are
weaving in and out of a rhythm, as opposed to running along with it. Of
course, the coolest guitarists do both.
You wanna hear the weirdest thing. I suck at sweep picking. Although I have
improved a great deal these past three months. I have really been working on
using the littlest amount of pick to string contact as possible without
missing the string. (almost like I feel like I am air guitaring). This
helped me get better at sweep picking. The first technique I caught onto was
Eddie Tapping, then long legato runs, then eight finger, then straight all
notes picked, and the sweep picking. I have to admit I cheat with the eight
finger. Roy Ashen from MI got me started on using a pony tail tie (or
whatever you call them - scrunchies?) When I know I am going to do a long
eight finger run (not necessarily fast - I do this when I want to play
something originally on keys (large intervals) such as the keyboard part on
the beginning of 6:00. I did this when I had another guitarist in the band,
but no keys. I always volunteer for the keyboard parts. So much more to
learn. But I flip the scruncy right over the nut, and I am free to
concentrate on the dynamics of the note as oppossed to the ringing of the open
strings.
Back to Economy Picking, another jammer said he thought economy (slip) picking
felt awkward. I would say he should stick with Alternate Picking. Not that
learning both methods is bad, but if he had to choose one, stay with Alternate
Picking. Like I said, I don't believe anybody's guitar method can be deemed
as "The Right Way to Play". Some comment about using it when he air guitared
though. Maybe I am losing my sense of humor, but I think I missed the point
there. Maybe there was no point.
Well, sorry if keyboard players and drummers tried to find the end of this and
got bored out of their mind, but if you want to discuss your techniques, I am
not opposed to hearing it. I actually play keys (better than the average
guitarist, pathetic when compared to actual keyboardists).
One thing for sure, I am glad CD's don't wear out otherwise I would have to
preorder eight more copies of LTE right now.
Sorry if there are typos and words missing that make sentences awkward at
times, but I just type these things as my brain forms them. I think my
ability to type fast somehow helped my guitar playing. I never had that
problem the other guy mentioned about the pinky being underdeveloped. So
we're all practicing guitar as we type!!!

Actually, the big hair has alot of basis for it. Most of the supershredders have big hair. Notice how Joe Satch got real laid back after the hair came off? Started doing the jazzy, bluesy stuff? It' s the hair. And if you open any of their guitar cases, there's a collection of lighters and Troll Dolls[tm]. It's just an expoundment on the hair thing. The more hair the better. I bet non of you knew that Crystal Gayle was a supershredder. She was just a closet shredder. She'd hide in the closet and shred. But of course if you spill green ooze on a turtle, you've got something else. A hairless reptile should in fact be incapable of playing guitar. Let alone with three fingers, but somehow or another Leonardo had the best ability of them all. I saw him live, and believe me, he could cut Yngwie into piece. But I digress.
