I am a music supervisor for Best Buy in Charlotte, NC. If the Cd's are really out of place at the store you went to, then that store is not holding up to the standards Best Buy has set for them. We have to go through the entire cd section 1-2 times a week, keep them straight and in order, and have artist title cards on them. While it is true that Best Buy does not have a lot of the artists that are frequently discussed on this group, I already have claimed dibs on the first Liquid Tension album that comes in, as well as the new Helloween, & Iron Maiden discs. I think tomorrow I will buy the new Satriani that came out today, and maybe the new Richie Sambora (the first disc was really good blues rock, not much at all like Bon Jovi material).

Guess I'll hop in on "drop your pants and show us your gear" thread.

Drums : Pearl Exports - 12,13,16" toms, 20" bass chrome finish (old, short-lug series) Pearl Free Floating maple snare - 3 1/2" X 14" black finish (sweet!) Remo roto-toms - 6,8,10" Pearl double pedal

    Cymbals : Zildjian - 10" A Custom splash, 10" A splash, 17" A med crash, 16" A Custom Projection crash, 13" K/Z hihats, 20" K Custom ride Paiste - 20" 2002 China (big ol' beast I got used a while ago) Sabian - 6" Cymbal Disc (ding!)

Misc : Sticks - Promarks, usually some form of 5B's. "The Naturals" are nice. Throne - Roc-n-Soc, motorcycle seat with backrest. Keyboard - Yamaha PSR-510 (and a Boss Heavy Metal pedal ;) ) Droids - R2-D2

Recording Stuff : Tascam 644 4-track - King of All 4 Tracks Alesis Midiverb IV Strobe light and track lighting controled from my rack :) A couple of SM-57's and some Radio Shack mics Miles of cables More adapters than the stockroom at Radio Shack

In a couple of years, I hope to get a new drum set. Maybe a Pearl Master Series or something like that. Probably get all smaller-sized toms and go with a rack setup. I also plan on getting a much better home studio setup with an ADAT or two. Maybe adding a compressor in a week or so as a b-day present. Anyone have any compressor recommendations? I've been hearing alot about the RNC. It's not dual-mono though, only stereo with 1 set of controls.

I just picked up the tribute CD Working Man from Circuit City (of all places). That is an awesome CD. It's good to hear S. Bach again. He has an awesome voice.

I was wondering if Ty-Bor and the Snow Dog has those little solos that MP has in the original Rush tune. Just wondering.

This is dead on. I saw them open for Rush once and they were just about the worst opening act I had ever seen. I remember thinking to myself, "Whose bright idea was it to have them open for RUSH??"

and Eric raved about Satch's new effort, "Crystal Planet": > Kicks ass. Oh man, by far his best effort. Very intelligent piece of > musicianship. Dammit, you people are *really* whetting my appetite for this one. I *knew* I should've gone to get it during my lunch break. I've been playing Satch all day at work here in honor of the new release. :) I was dreadfully disappointed with the "Joe Satriani" album so I'm glad to hear Eckie n' Eric's good reviews. Looking forward to picking it up....

I just heard Richie Sambora's stuff on Howard Stern this morning, and it did absolutely nothing for me. Not that I hate the guy or anything, I've heard some of his solo stuff before, but based on his performance this morning (yeah, it's in the morning, yadda, yadda) and on clips of the CD, it's definitely one that gives a "ho-hum" rating in my book....

It's interesting. I don't think that his self titled album is such a disappointment. In fact, I dig some of the songs very much. But, of course, that's an album which isn't appropriate for certain moods: you have to be in the right mood to hear "Down, Down, Down".

But it's certainly worth the experience.

I do the car drums all the time, but another good set is in an elevator. Elevator floors make perfect bass drums, and if you have a set of keys or some change in your right pocket, you've got the hihat. Simply use your left thigh as the snare, and you've got a good sounding set. Toms and cymbals have to be mouthed, though.

I am thinking of getting a 7-stringed guitar i have always wanted one but I do not like the sound of the pickups either i have dimarzio evolutions on now and I don=B4t think I can live with the sound of the Blaze pickups on the 7 stringed when I am used to the evolution sound. I have tried some Universes and the Multicolored and the White feels better in quality than the Black with green pickups. But However the Black with green pickups is cheeper. The New UV777PBK Is the greatest in quality and finish. HAVE A NICE DAY ALL MUSICLOVERS!!!

I used to like Candlebox. Then their lyrics started to get to me. Have you noticed that every one of their songs has a TON of "you"'s in it? "You, its for you, only you...blah blah you".

But _You_ isn't the only song with the you syndrome.

Also, its true that they weren't very good live. I saw them when they opened for Rush on the Counterparts tour. Quite un-inspiring.

    > though, they were not very good live, and the singer sucked live > (forgetting lyrics and shtuff like that..........)

That's not the reason that Candlebox's singer sucked. The reason is that he damn near killed me.

Now, I'm really not a hockey fan, but I'm from Long Island, so I'm rather familiar with the sport, as well as with the local rivalries. The Rush tour with Candlebox stopped at Nassau Coliseum (home of the NY Islanders) and the singer from Candlebox had the balls to come out on stage wearing a Rangers jersey. Well, at first there were some minor cheers and boos, and then it started. The "1940" chant - berating Rangers fans by chanting the last time (at that point) that Blue had won the Stanley Cup. I'm from LI (as opposed to the city), so I thought this was hysterical -- mainly because most of my friends have had these debates before, but also because it's usually a lot of fun to pick on frustrated Rangers fans -- and I started to laugh. I was sitting in floor seats, and the extremely large, unpleasant, and intoxicated man next to me happened to be a Rangers fan.

"What you laughin' at, kid?" he said, not smiling. I thought I was dead. And I probably would have been if some guy on the other side of this sizable gentleman hadn't started actually chanting "1940." By the time that guy was sufficiently mutilated, he'd forgotten about me. *phew*

    That's why I hate Candlebox. :)

By and large, Mike was extremely faithful to the original recordings. Most of the changes he made were obvious and clever, like the YYZ rhythm during The Trees. Obviously a lot of the fills and solos he did are different than Neil's, but they are mostly in the same places and last the same amount of time.

    And it's "By-Tor," not "Ty-Bor." :) -d

Hi, there! I just bought two awesome albums. One is called VanZant "Brother to brother" which, as you may guess, is the new effort from two brothers: Johnny VanZant (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie Van Zant. Very melodic, well played blues rock. I think a definite MUST for people who like Skynyrd and Stevie Ray. And, of course, the second one is "Crystal Planet" - probably a lot of you have already bought the album. Kicks ASS! Once again Joe showed everybody their place. Concerning the discussion about whether Angra will be signed to a major, I think we cannot exclude such possibility since in France, for example, this band has an enourmous success; they sold out the same venue as fast as Dream Theater did. I personally think that Andre and Co. are enough talantive and enovative to become one of major power/prog. metal bands. Thought I'd share. Jacob. provibe@club-internet.fr

Okay, I made this statement and put it in all caps. I put a small disclaimer however, which I will now expand on. DO NOT LEARN THEORY FROM A GUITARIST isn't saying GUITARISTS CAN'T TEACH THEORY WELL. Two totally different statements. Yes guitarists can teach Music Theory. And a minority can teach it well. But because guitarist tend to be more "self-taught" than most other instruments, they also tend to interpret things incorrectly sometimes.

There are so many GUITARISTS out their who give lessons out there that really don't know Music Theory that well, and definitely don't understand the it's application. You don't conform to Music Theory. You don't have music theory conform to you. It is just a learning tool. Theory is an evolving practice. When Bach wrote some of his compositions, they were later used as the basis for teaching Theory. However, Bach didn't LEARN MUSIC THEORY and then write the songs.

Well, quite simply: Guitarists CAN teach Music Theory, BUT you have a much better shot of getting a better MUSIC THEORY teacher if you go to a non- guitarist. There are A LOT of GUITARISTS out there who can really CONFUSE a new student because the GUITARIST (TEACHER) is confused themselves.

Get the picture? Can you disagree?
