Yeah, I have a new email address. Sue me. :)

I bought the new Satriani last night. Honestly, even though I *love* the man, and think he's one of the most talented musicians ever, this album is terribly disappointing. The only songs that grabbed me were 'Raspberry Jam Delta-V' and 'Ceremony' - other than that, nothing really stood out at me as being the Satch that I know and love. Maybe it's his sound that's turning me off of him (his sound, IMO, is really bad), or maybe it's the fact that the songs just kinda wander aimlessly without making a point... I don't know. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get, I think, my money's worth on this album.

You know what DID impress me about it, though? Jeff Campitelli. Man, he's awesome. What a good sound they got for him.

And you know what else? I think the reason that I think FII is the best thing that DT has ever put out is the fact that they now can groove. I mean, they've found ---> THE GROOVE <---. What? An example, you ask? Listen to the bass and drums in Derek's solo in ToT. I was blasting this the other day and I was just thinking to myself, "Man. NONE of their other albums have this! This is friggin' insane!!" Every band should learn to be this good. Any thoughts?

    MASSACHUSETTS / NEW ENGLAND JAMMERS:

Joe Satriani will be at the Tower Burlington Store on March 22nd at 3:00 PM (it is a Sunday). He'll be doing the autograph thing, and you can enter to win one of his guitars (it's black and hanging on the wall, and it actually looks pretty good in the display there). The place will probably be packed to the gills with people, but hey - it'll be a good time nonetheless. Anyone who's met Satch knows that he's a super nice guy (I partied with him once), and it's worth meeting him.

Me, I'm gonna ask him to sign my G3, "To Nick. Yours, Mr. Clean" :)

    Brief thoughts...

I bought Yes' Drama about 6 months ago having heard all about their progressive roots and technical ability. The music is brillient but the vocals... dear God the vocals are rotten. Chris Squire is a class bassists; I regularly play along to that album from beginning to end but the vocals.....

Anyway, I got a copy of Hightlights - ok music, a bit airy-fairy but the vocals are brutal.

Yesterday, I bought Magna Carta's Tales of Yesterday. This is alot better. All the magic of their music with passable vocals. Robert Berry's "Roundabout" is excellent. I didn't like Shadow Gallerys cover; the vocals were probably accuratley recreated but it hurt me to listen to them - the music was excellent though.

Is this a common complaint of Yes' music?

    Rob.

    >>LtL > >Thank you lord, thou hast blessed us, DT has played LtL live on this tour. >Maybe that means Ill get to see it when the come around to the west coast. >I would be able to die happily then. > >Jon

You said it, man. Despite it being an awesome show (and me grabbing a Petrucci pick :), I was so disappointed when they didn't play LtL in Rochester, NY on their I&W tour. WFS and LtL are my 2 favorite Dream Theater songs, if you can really call them 2 distinct songs. Take the Time is probably right behind those 2.

I am listening to Crystal Planet right now. You guys were right, Satch is back! :-) He was great when I saw him on the G3 tour, even if his guitar did blind me! :-) Btw, according to the person at Newburry Comics where my roommate and I bought our tickets, we got the last 2 seats in the house at their Boston show! She might have been kidding, but its still a cool thing to brag about ;-)

With all the cool music suggestions lately, I have had to make a ytse-recommended music list.

Hey, any idea why Working Man is listed as $35.99 on CDNOW? Is it a 2 CD set, or just out of print?

I'm visiting my grandmother in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2 weeks, and she's invited me to go see the Jax symphony with her. I said "Yes" very emphatically. Then she told me that they are doing Led Zeppelin. Has anyone here seen or heard this done before? I've been a Zep fan for years, but....

I'm in the minority, being that I actually like Anna Lee. It's great to see that they've played it live recently. Here's to hoping they'll do it when they get back to the states this summer. And maybe Nightmare Cinema can do "Burn" instead of "Perfect Strangers." I can already hear James singing "All I hear...BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!"

Hey, I'm trying to get into Yes also, and I agree that the worst part about it are Jon Anderson's vocals and the vocal harmonies. I don't know exactly what is the point that makes it very hard to get into, but I think that the falsettos are the main reason.

But I keep wondering, because I like a lot of music that has falsettos...

I really, really prefer those wicked, weird instrumental passages. The weirder, the better. :-))) Yeah!

But I think that J. Anderson's vocals can get more and more acceptable with some listens, but I definitely think you won't end up loving his vocals -- only accepting them.

Oh, sorry for the ignorance, but is this a tribute to Yes (that's what I understand from this paragraph)???

Don't know if it's common, but I also suffer with this...

I listened to this album only once and was completely blown away by the music! Really incredible stuff, with that "Petrucci Sound" (of course, I know that Petrucci has borrowed a lot of elements from Steve Morse, but hey, everyone makes comparison to already known elements and that was the first time I heard Steve Morse:-) ).

hiya guys, just a short note for Rob re:ytsedigest 3618. My lead guitarist plays a Yamaha Pacifica and basically uses 0.010s most of the time (also used D'Addario 0.008s while jamming etc.). As far as picks go, they're just the big Dunlap stubbies (I'm sorry I don't know the size). He's basically into a lot of shredding and we are a guitar-based band. Some of the covers we did may give you a better picture of the kind of stuff he plays with the combo above:

1)Stressfest (Morse) 2)For the Love of God (Vai) 3)UaGM (DT) 4)Black Magic (Reb Beach)

However, after seeing a lot of bands I basically feel that you can get the best results out of the stuff you're really used to. It's probably a good idea to stick to your original combo (which, btw, sounds good to me) and build on it unless you can find a big difference with another one. But hey, I'm a guitar illiterate and there's no shortage of axemeisters on the jam who can give you the best possible advice. I look forward to seeing their ideas. Just sharing, @66@$
