Heh...riiight. Well, I have itty bitty hands, and I'm managing with
guitar. Some of it is a pain, but hell, I suck anyway. I just keep trying
and strtching. I can play the whole beginning part of Erotomania, and
parts of that are a bit of a stretch on jumbo frets....
Re: tendonitis. I have tendonitis in both my wrists (from decorating ice
cream cakes at Carvel...don't ask). If you play guitar in such a way that
your wrists aren't too sore when you finish playing (and keep doing this
every time you practice; don't play for too long!), I've found it actually
becomes therapy. My left wrist is a LOT stronger than my right wrist now.
I play oboe, and the right wrist, which supports the instrument, gets tired
very quickly still, while my left wrist, which used to hurt after a half
hour of guitar, can last for several hours now. :)
As far as keyboard vs. guitar goes...well...I think they both have merits
and disadvantages. But think about this; you don't have to worry about
breathing when you play guitar or keys; wind instruments are so fucking
hard to play, especially oboe and french horn! >;p So there.

Regarding the vocals on Yes's DRAMA. Well, part of the reason they don't
stand up as well is it's not Jon Anderson, but Geoff Downes. Personally, I
don't mind them, and think he mostly does a decent job of sounding like Jon,
though he's not as good a singer.
But then, I like all Yes's vocals, and like Jon Anderson. And someone
mentioned falsetto. Jon rarely sounds like he uses falsetto. He just has a
very high voice. Take for example the interviews on the YesYears video.

They didn't play LtL? Man, is my memory going. I do however,
distinctly remember surrounded, and also TTT with Galactic Cowboys on
backup vocals. That was fun. I also remember John Myung swingin' his
long hair in circles, heavy metal old school style. Anyone else
remember this? I just remember a strobe light goin', and John in
front of it swingin' his hair like a wild man. Maybe I was just
imagining it though. It's funny to see how his stage presence has
changed over the years. Anyways . . .

Okay, so I've read all the Jams I missed, and there's been some discussion
about the Japan HY. Sorry about my post in the last Jam then... my bad.
Thanks, Graham, for the review. So now my question is: how is CDNow to deal
with? I checked them out, and they have it for like $17.99. They're pretty
reputable, as far as I know. Any comments?
Secondly, I'm in the midst of a brain fart. Can someone drop me a line and
let me know what the name of the CD is that features JP, Steve Morse, and
other guitar heroes? I think it's a Japanese release, and Jart Music was
advertising it a while ago. I checked out their web site and I'll be damned
if I can find it on there.

I too picked up 'Crystal Planet' afte rthe early excited reviews on the
jam.
Good stuff, an improvement on the last disk, but still short of the standard
of 'Flying'. Am I think only fan who thinks that the addition of some vocals
would make it even better?
Caught 'Yes' on thursday night for the first time - (what an awfful thing to
admit after being a fan for 25 years). They got a hell of a reception from
the crowd at the Hammersmith Odeon (good to see the place being used
for Rock Concerts again now that 'Riverdance" is finished). Jon's voice
was faultless and all the classics sounded perfect. Didn't miss Wakeman,
(busy with TV work and spreading the Gospell), the russian keyboards
player was excellent. Just had to buy a ticket for the next London gig at
the end of April. Don't miss them .
Talking of Gigs, besides the obvious DT gigs, there's Satch and G3 in May,
Tori Amos in June (seems ages since her name was mentioned on the Jam)
and Re-Genesis in April. Also looking forward to the prospect of those Lemur
Voice gigs with Orchestra.

Calvin, I really enjoyed your writing about the sound of DT. I agree
with much of it, Labrie sounds MUCH better in FII, performance wise and
production wise. As for the Guitars, I like Petrucci in Images and
Words production wise, but he matured just like Labrie, and his
performance in FII was his most expressive. Myung has always been the
underman, but I think he also shined most in FII(I know, I know, it
seems like I'm just ranting about their latest, but it has impressed me
like no album has since Promised Land by QR) I play bass as well as
sax, and I have always appreciated his playing, but he was mixed a
little higher in FII, which I really enjoyed. Portnoy, like you said,
can do no wrong, he's a god on the drums, really incredible. I didn't
care much for the lack of dynamics in I&W, but his performance was still
impeccable. I'd probably agree that Awake shows some of his best work,
although FII is also fine, though he doesn't get as much of a chance to
just let loose...
As for what you said about rap, dance, and all that other stuff, I can't
really agree with you there. Most of what is done, especially in the
rap and r&b world, is done thanks to the producers. I do like
Industrial, mostly because of all the different sound textures
used.(Even though typically it puts me in a seriously screwed up mood)
Rap(and I may get flamed for this) is more entertainment than music. If
you classify music as the "art of noise" then rap, jazz, classical,
gunshots, and a toilet flushing are all music. I dont' personally go
along with this definition of music. I believe for something to be
musical, it has to be melodic as well as rhythmic, with harmony also in
there. rap disposes melody, and nearly disposes of harmony. All you're
left with is some repetitious, sampled rhythms.
My main influences have roots in Latin, jazz, and funk. I've also grown
up with metal, but really only DT and QR have really influenced me as a
musician, although i listen and enjoy other things.

At the show in Oslo, Norway 1th March, someone asked Derek: "Do you guys change setlists at each show?" - "Yeah, do you guys enjoy it?", Derek answered. The same person said that he could see that the band enjoyed changing setlists as well, and asked whether this was the case. As far as I remember, Derek agreed. So, I believe you will have different setlists when they come back to the States!

Geoffrey Downes has nothing to do with it. If you take Drama as just an album, and not as "an album by Yes" you'll realize how perfect it really is. No one (and i mean no one) could come up with a masterpiece such as _Machine Messiah_ except for the 4 musicians (not counting Horn) that were in Yes, circa 1980.

A few days ago I got Empty Tremor's album "Apocolokyntosys" and I'm really impressed. This is the I&W-progressive metal style that I love! I can't believe that the members of the band are this young, their technical and musical skills are amazing! I'm not very good at describing music, so I won't go into details now, all I'd like to say is: Check them out !!!

Yo boys, I haven't seen anything about this yet so I thought I'd update you people. Ibanez has just released two new JPM series guitars yet again. First, Ibanez chose JP as one of the FOUR artists to have a 90th anniversary model release for. The others are Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Paul Gilbert. The London Philharmonic Orchestra (i think that's right at least...I've got the cd, just haven't paid that much attention to it) did a Cd called "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin."
Songs: Kashmir Battle Of Evermore Stairway To Heaven When The Levee Breaks Going To California Friends All My Love
plus: 2 non zep songs
The Same orchestra also did an orchestral cd featuring the works of Pink Floyd though I can't think of the name of that CD.
The "Symphonic Led Zeppelin" CD was prodoced, I believe, by a member of the band Killing Joke.
Pretty good cd. I'm a big fan of Led Zeppelin and I do like this CD. (Favorite bands: Led Zeppelin & Dream Theater)
