Right on! I'm surprised at the number of people who are complaining that DT will be opening for two big-name acts, instead of headlining their own club shows. Many of us here in the U.S. already got our chance to see them do the headlining thing back in Oct/Nov/Dec of last year, and hopefully in May they'll play some of the places that they didn't play then. And this business of opening for a big act is something that they have needed to do for a long time. The increased exposure will inevitably lead to increased album sales. I'll give an example. How many people here bought a CD by Big Wreck, Fates Warning, or I Mother Earth as a result of seeing them open for DT? I know that at least a few people did, because I fit into that category, as do several of my friends. I knew almost nothing about Fates Warning before I saw them open for Dream Theater on the Awake tour. Now I own SIX Fates Warning CD's, largely because I got that initial exposure to them by seeing them open for DT.
The bottom line is that the more people who hear Dream Theater, the more albums they will sell, and that means a more secure future with their label, which means MORE ALBUMS and MORE TOURS in the future.

Prog-Net was introduced on Thursday, March 26, and now it needs your input, opinions, and CD reviews. The Web Site is an experiment to see if I can bring the fans of Progressive music together in an organized and helpful way. I am always looking for advice on what to buy next, and some of the best music I own came to me because someone said, "You like this band? You HAVE to try that band." I would like Prog-Net to become a daily magazine that will have new CD reviews, announcements, and even <gulp> surveys - ALL contributed by the readers. In order for the site to work, I need your help, so PLEASE stop by and visit (yes, it's completely free). You can find Prog-Net at:
http://www.isminternet.com/prognet/
Please let me know if you have any problems, complaints, suggestions, or anything else under the sun.
Thanks,

p.s. Let's get some prog-metal reviews up there, so our readers won't fall asleep. :)

Greetings, fellow Jammer-type people...
In YTSEJAM Digest #3680, "Trevor W. Hoit" <TrevorW@ms.kallback.com> asked the following question concerning Jens Johanssen's recent "Heavy Machinery" album:
<< Has anyone heard his new one or have a review of his last one with Holdsworth? >>
Well, now that it's been released domestically on the Shrapnel label after previously being available only as a hard-to-find and rather expensive import on Jens' own Heptagon label, hopefully a lot more people will take advantage of the opportunity to hear it, because it's some of the hottest progressive jazz-rock fusion this side of Scott Henderson's Tribal Tech, IMO. Jens composes the kind of anarchic, yet structured tunes that soloists beg to solo over, and his lightning-fingered solos prove yet again that he's right up there with the likes of Jordan Rudess, Patrick Moraz, Scott Kinsey and our own Derek Sherinian when it comes to setting the keys on fire. And he does such a great job playing the bass lines on synthesizer that you don't mind the absence of "real" electric bass *too* much. Meanwhile, on drums, Jens' brother Anders lays down all the monster power grooves, breakneck double-bass work and dynamic fills you could hope for, providing a furious yet solid rhythmic foundation for Jens and Allan to solo over. I'm always amazed at how overlooked and underrated Anders is; he's been on my 'Top Ten Drummers' list for a long time now, and this album shows why. As for the venerable Mr. Holdsworth: while many have said that "Heavy Machinery" contains his finest work in years, I wouldn't call it a 'comeback,' because as far as I'm concerned, he's still the standard by which all others must be judged when it comes to creativity and unpredictability in soloing. Even today, no one soars into the stratosphere quite like Holdsworth does, and it's a real treat to hear him feeding off the Johanssens' energy, trading insane licks with Jens, digging into Anders' grooves; they really mesh well together. There's even one track ("Good Morning, Mr. Coffee," I think) on which Allan takes a quasi-blues turn that has to be heard to be believed. To sum up: this CD is a must-have for fans of superior quality progressive jazz-rock fusion fans. Guitarists, keyboard players and drummers in particular will find plenty to make their jaws drop to the floor, but non- musicians will enjoy the accessible grooves and tight ensemble playing here as well. If you like this album, then be on the lookout for the Shrapnel release of "Fission," the follow-up to "Heavy Machinery," which, as I've mentioned in a previous post, features the phenomenal six-string talents of Shawn Lane and Mike Stern, with Anders Johanssen behind the drum kit once again as well. Oh, by the way: not only is Jens featured on the new live CD from Stratovarius, but he also plays all the keyboards on Mastermind 's upcoming new album, which will probably take guitar genius/singer/songwriter Bill Berends' ELP-meets-the Mahavishnu Orchestra brand of high-energy progressive rock to its highest level yet. Whew! With all this going on, I wonder if Jens ever gets to sleep...
Hope this helps!

Wow. My mom heard Voices (well the first 2 minutes at least) and the first thing she said was that it sounded like Moody Blues. I think it has something to do with that gated "leslie" guitar part. I've heard a few MB songs and I didn't notice any particular linkage.

I recently picked up a Sony Car Discman, after years of suffering with noisy cassettes. Now, I'm going back to my old discs and hearing them in an entirely new light. Now, I've had CD players at home for a long time, but like many people, my car is my listening room. I'm rarely alone at home, and I certainly can't crank up my music without fears of my neighbors calling the cops...so my car naturally becomes my musical sanctuary. Now, on CD, I'm hearing new DT stuff that I never heard before, even though I've listened to them hundreds of times. For example, in 6:00 (during "Inside..looking outside.." part after drums kick in), before JP's wah-drenched solo part (right before "So many ways to drown a man...), KevMo plays the exact same notes as JP's following solo. I just thought it was cool that I heard something I never noticed. I didn't think there was a note on Awake that I hadn't torn apart and analyzed...I guess I was wrong. Now that I think about it, I've never listened to I&W or Awake with headphones, either. Maybe I should spend some time this weekend listening to all their CD's with headphones. Maybe I should spend the weekend in serious counseling ("...and when did you first notice this lack of observational skills?")..who knows?
Keep 'jammin'!

People need to remember something. Deep Purple is bigger than DT, but they're not that big. It's not like opening for the Spice Girls or something. Not to mention, the average middle-aged burnout at a Deep Purple gig isn't gonna give a tin shit for a band like DT. They'll get some much-needed exposure, but this isn't some magical popularity pill by any stretch of the imagination.

Does anyone have sales figures for FII and how it compares to I&W and Awake? Is the new, more commercial DT actually selling more records or has the change been a waste of time? If I&W was their most successful album thus far, perhaps the next album should be another progressive masterpiece if they want to increase sales. How about 75 minutes of Metropolis Pt. II?!! :)

Jammers,
I'm just an amature guitar player and I don't really know much about the technical stuff. What is the difference between "Overdrive" on say an amp, and a "Distortion" processor pedal? I'm looking through these magazines and it doesn't tell me much about the sound they produce. I can never get my "overdrive" on my amp to get the distortion that DT, Symphony X, or anybody else gets, so I'm assuming they're using distortion equipment instead of overdrive. Could someone please enlighten me on this? Thank a buch
