Yep. Geddy and Steve Harris were the two that initially inspired me. I
have always preferred playing in a band with one good guitarist, as
opposed to two or three guitarists, no matter how good they are. The
thing about those two guys that inspired me the most was the fact that
they were filling the gaps and not just taking up space.
Sorry about the multiple posts - I'm taking a break from digitally
editing some music that has those gaps filled very nicely :)

yeah. I do, however, like when they do it live the DO extend it a bit.
It works in a live setting. It sounds more jam-like.

I think the opposite. :) I think that YNM is at once more commercial and
more complex and fresh-sounding than YoM.

heheh he did actaully play those country leads quite well, when I saw
Metallica a couple of weeks ago. Shame his more metallic leads were

Just for something different, I thought I'd ask a Dream Theater related
question...
In the song A Change Of Seasons, right at the beginning of the section
titled The Darkest Of Winters (Right after "She looked me in the eye, I
said "I love You....Goodbye") there's a barely audible conversation
between the father and son. It begins with "It's the most awful thing
you'll ever hear" and ends with "She's been killed", and , judging
by the lyrics from the section Carpe Diem, seems to deal with a plane
crash. Does anyone know the FULL conversation? I've listened to this
section a BILLION times, and STILL can't get the whole thing....

When I posted the remark about your joke about Kirk Hammett being fastest, I thought the sarcasm was meant as a slam to him. I've been extremely frustrated with people fucking with Metallica, esp. Kirk. (no pun intended) When I went off on my little hissy fit, I was kinda lashing out at all negative comments about them. The quote was not from anyone in particular, just kind of what seems to be the overall attitude of quite a few people. I did not mean that you meant/said all of that. So, I am apologizing for sounding like such an asshole.

The comments about Kirk's solos being handed to him by Cliff Burton were made by Dave Mustaine shortly after he was fired from Metallica. I have a feeling he said them to kinda get back at the guy who replaced him. As for Slayer, I was not referring to Jeff and Kerry's lead playing, but the ultra fast rythm. Most of their stuff is not really that tasteful (or even listenable sometimes :-] ) but being able to play that fast together is kinda impressive, even though that really isn't important.

Other suff: YNM/YOM: I like the chorus of YNM...but I also like the intro/outro/middle section of YOM...so I suppose I would prefer the demo with YNM's choruses...IMO...
TAMP: The demo is better than the album vers., IMO...but the album vers. does not suck by any means...

There's alot to be negative about. Just look at Megadeth. They're whoopin' Metallica's ass right now. Just what kind of a blues based country/southern rock band would call themselves METALlica? Metallica sounds more like a bad copy of Led Zeppelin (I'm sorry if I'm offending any Zep fans here) now, with a shitty, shitty, SHITTY lead player. Kirk seems like he needs the cocaine and the bad wife to be normal again (j/k :).

Well, Metallica has shunned the people that put them where they are (i.e. the hardcore fans). You don't fuck with your own kind. They're learning that now, 'cause their albums aren't selling as much as they used to. Metallica's unfortunately nothing anymore. They'd make a great METAL band, though. I used to think yeah, Load and ReLoad are just a phase, but no, it's really them.

Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. Understood?" And low and behold, when we started up again, it actually sounded like a song. The moral: bass players are idiots. Just kidding. The moral is, sometimes less is more, and sometimes more is more. It just depends. Had we been a jazz band, then what he was doing might have fit. But we weren't and it didn't. Like it or not, the role of the bass in most rock bands is largely one of support. There are exceptions, but that's usually how things go. That's not to say that you can't do interesting stuff within that context, nor do I mean to dennounce proficeny on the instrument, but just don't forget why you're there.

WOW !! Very critical stuff and maybe indeed time for an Adidas on rye. I would think that during the writing and rehearsing of a song, one will try different themes of a solo to see how they would fit. That is, unless a solo is just a brief single speed (normally fast) set of runs, etc. Some will fit, some wont. We were privileged to be offered some insight into what may best be called "dirty laundry". When I practice solos on my air guitar ...... oh yeah, never mind ........
I really think that for me, the different themes of a solo are what make a solo interesting. And how these themes integrate with the song, itself. And the greedy bastard in me is looking for a few more themes to be added, but again, that's the greedy bastard speaking.
Take Comfortably Numb and Mr. David Gilmour as an example. The original solo on The Wall was cool indeed. BUT, after playing the song for 10+ years, the solo evolved and new "themes" were added and integrated with some of the original themes adding to the greatness of the song. (To me, the best set of solo themes being played at the *end* of the About Face tour.) To think that all of this magic just happens spontaneously, even for the great ones, is very hard for me to believe.
And, have I said (ahem thar asswipe on the left coast) how much I appreciate the FanClub CD ??
