    Hello more experienced 'Jammers,

I will be attempting to interface with OFB members after the Daytona's show
tomorrow night. What is the best way to go about this, without being a
    jerk/nuisance/a-hole/etc.?
This is a sincere question, and I would appreciate genuine responses. Just
want a couple of sigs, and pictures, if possible, with the guys. Thank you
for your kind consideration, and please be nice to others. :~)

    Kez

P.S. First show of the return to the states. Any guesses on set changes?

It's not a matter of Ged and Alex "telling Neil what to do." It's
simply the way they write. Ged and Alex go into one room and write
music. Neil goes into another room with a small drumkit (I guess to
fuck around on to battle writer's block) and writes lyrics. Then they
get together and put it all together.

    > Check out some VH tabs, do you really think that everybody in VH had some
    > musical input in songs like Eruption or 316? Don't think so!

No, that was a deal the band made early on, so that they could all
    share in the royalties.

    Finals suck!

Well, as far as this thread gows, let me add some humble thoughts...
Someone mentioned before that playing fast is important, I must admit taht
I do not agree with it completely. No, I don't mean that one should always
play whole notes or something like that, but sometimes the bassline just
becomes more emotionous (is that the right word?) when it doesn't even
include fast passages all over the neck. Listen to some Yes (I can't
remember the names of the songs) and you'll get what I mean, or PF (early)
    - that's just awesome.

Another thing is the pick -to use it or not? Somebody said taht he would
fire the bassist if he only starts playing with a pick, but, hey, it must
be admitted that if you're gonna play some Metallica-linke crap you'll most
definetely need a pick. With the guitarist in my band I have got just the
opposite problem - he forces me to use a pick, cause when i play with my
fingers I can play more notes per second than he does and that starts to
    bother him. :-)

As it goes to choosing the instrument, I must say that I am very surprised
taht a man who once tried bass can forget about it and start playing
something else. For me BASS is just the right thing - this was the
instrument I started with, I don't know why - there was some magic about
it. And let all the darn guitarists who say that playing the bass is easier
f*ck off - playing bass is not easier at all!!! For those interested - I
also play the guitar, the keys and the drums a bit. But I only started
paying these instruments in order to be able to explain my ideas to other
    band-mates.

And the main point - what makes a bassist good. As I said it's not
necessarily speed, though it's important as well. IMO the thing that makes
a bass player good is when he can figure out what type of a bassline a
certain songs requires - it can be the funky shredding or the simple
quarter-noted bassline, or a melodic bassline in the vein of Geddy Lee, or
some Jaco-like shredding, or guitar dubbing lines like JM does.
In this connection I can just praise Stu Hamm - the man knows what he
should play!!! His solo albums feature extremely technical lines, but when
he starts playing with the shredders like Satch or Marty Friedman he knows
his place as well - just simple lines. In this case his work with SyVy
stands out - it features both - excellent rhythm section and some tap-work
    (like in Blue Powder).
Ahh... Just can't wait to hear what he did with Frank Gambale on their new
    project...

..Bash me for using a pick sometimes now... :-)
    Pete

I've got a problem here. I get my DT tix for San Antonio in the mail on
saturday, and that same day my parents say that we might be going out to CA
to visit my brother and his wife (it's memorial day weekend). The trip
isn't set in stone yet (i think) so I might not have a problem if we end up
    not going anyway.
There's no way I'm going to miss DT if i can help it, but I haven't
seen my brother since Thanksgiving, and they've moved into a new house in a
new town and it's a big ol' deal, and a trip would be great before summer
school starts but I can't miss DT, especially with the tickets in my hands.
But either way, I'm going to feel bad for missing the one I missed...

    >concentrate on III stuff
I haven't seen the MTV special yet, so I don't know which songs
were cut out, but the complete set list for the Sydney show had five songs
from the new album (not including "Dirty Water Dog" which appears to have
been dropped, at least temporarily). Definitely not a lot, but it's not
too poorly represented. I hope that "Once," at least, is played on the
upcoming US dates, especially since AVH mentioned that in an interview
    regarding stage visuals.

Both of those songs were played at the concert. I guess they
    weren't broadcast.
As an aside, I'm surprised how impressed/satisfied with the "new
Van Halen" most of you seem to be, especially compared with those on the
    alt.music.van-halen newsgroup.

Well, if you check out Braindance (www.iuma.com has info on them), their
female guitarist, Vora Vor, is awesome! She's very jazz-based in her
playing, and she's fast, clean, creative, and talented. If you want a less
complex female guitarist/band, check out Drain s.t.h. Flavia is a good
guitarist--very solid, although she doesn't solo much. Veruca Salt's solos
are decent, but not very creative (basically repeating the main musical
    theme with some variations).

On another related note, I just got my new bridge installed (wilkinson),
and it's really sweet. I've been having fun learning tons of new material.
Hopefully, as it seems to be doing, my playing will grow as a result....
Anyone have any recommendations on places I can learn some speed exercises?

Anyway, sorry I'm so behind...trying to study for finals and write a
    25-page paper....

I hate to have my first post to the list be on the Metallica topic, but
there seems to be a common misconception in all of these posts regarding
Load and ReLoad. The assumption seems to be that since they've done two
albums of this less than sterling material, this is their new style
forever. Actually Load and Reload are more or less one album. They were
recorded in the same session, and rather than releasing a double album they
split it up and released two seperate albums. I don't know why, maybe
there was more money it for them or something. Like the general says in Dr
Strangelove, I don't think it's quite fair to condemn the whole program
because of a single slip up. And am I the only one who found it amusing
that after saying how glad he was that Metallica is changing James followed
it up by saying he was going to a Metallica concert because he wanted to
hear their old stuff? Anyhow I think I'll give Metallica one more shot
before I give up on them.

triple stroke roll down the octobahns and then do a cool little

My opinion is that every DT album has a different sound... But, if this is what you wanted to know, yes MP uses Mapex drums and a piccolo snare in ACOS (Am I right Mike?). That may be the "difference".

I believe Full On the Mouth is opening for this whole leg of the tour(might be wrong, though). Go to www.fullonthemouth.com for the stuff.

The game was called Necromonicon, and you can download the MP3's from a site that is linked to UACM. Go here: http://www.prognosis.com/dream/main.htm and then link to Sounds, and then to Tom Feiner's DT page.

    Hope this helps, Kez
