i wasn't refering to you about that comment, i've never heard your music, i
wouldn't judge something i never heard. i'm generally not one to judge stuff i
even have heard, but i was refering to the people who DO mindless wanking,
like slayer did. i'm sure they had no idea what they were doing when they were
"writing" the solos, and as far as that....

i see your point there, but personally i try not to use modes when i improvise
guitar solos. a little thing i learned from an Al DiMeola vid that helped my
playing greatly was to sit down and play a solo for about 10 minuites on one
string, then 10 mins on the next string. when you do that, you farmiliarize
yourself with the whole neck and get to know where are your root notes and
3rds and 5th and 7ths are, and basically you can get yourself away from the
"position playing" and i try to throw chromatics in my solos a lot, and
attempt key changes, but i generally stick to what i think sounds good, which
is usually in key for the most part. What I am saying is that it's really
unoriginal to stick to Hard rules when writing music, it's always good to let
your mind and music wander about your instrument, and just go off sometimes,
because you never know what you'll get, but having a knowledge of music theory
makes it so much easier to form a base for your music, instead of having to
guess whats going to sound good each note/chord at a time.

Obviously. But having command of your instrument is basically a function of
manual dexterity, not music theory.
> When you look at
> great musicians, what do they have in common?? They all KNOW THEORY.
That's your unsupported opinion. Define 'great musician.'
> respect the idea of music theory. You say that music came before rules,

Ummmmmm no. Western music has been around longer than theory, my friend. Theory
came later as a tool to explain the music. You think 'western music theory'
suddenly occured to some dude and *then* everyone started writing music? What
are you smoking?
> if you want no rules, or think that "anything goes," then go pick
> up the latest #1 CD or some other shit that some popular band comes out

Ummmmmmmm no. Those bands aren't using 'no rules,' they're using too many rules;
specifically the formulas for shallow chart success. Simple chord changes, a
catchy chorus and lyrics that the average person will find halfway entertaining.
> There's some simplicity for you, where the guys think they can
> pluck anything that "feels good"
This is exactly what I do, and I'm damn proud of it. You're saying I can't? Too
fucking bad, buddy. Sure, 90% of guitar players are faster than me, have better
technique...but I write exactly what I want to, nothing less and nothing more. I
didn't ask you to listen to it, prick, so don't tell me how to write it.

Hello everyone,
I just thought I'd mention the extrememly brilliant new Helloween album
"Better Than Raw". I finally got my hands on it the other day and I think
it is amazing!!! Andi's voice sounds slightly different to me, for the
better though, and the instruments are perfection. I recommend this album
to everyone, but I'm a little curious if people consider them Prog? Anyway,
check out track 6, "Revelation", and the way they've synchronised the drums
and guitars exceptionally well. And the intro Classical music is also
amazing and sets the scene for the first track, "Push", very well. A "Must
Buy" for everyone.
Secondly, I wonder if Spock's Beard have the right to use that name for
their band? Wouldn't there be some kind of copyright laws for the name
"Spock"? BTW, this is a serious question here, just in case any of you
think I'm taking the piss. I bet "Spock" is a Regd. Trademark of Paramount
Pictures and Star Trek.....
Finally, that elusive name "Jennifer Batten" is reappearing in 'Jams again
and I still haven't heard a single thing about her! Please someone direct
me to a website about her and her music, PLEASE!!! I'd also appreciate
private e-mail about her music because I'm finding it hard to read 'Jams at
the moment because of time constraints (Exams....) so I may skip all the
wonderful repercussions from this post. Sorry!
Actually, this is the final bit, why can't I access Helloween's official
website? The address is <http://www.helloween.com/> but I never get there!
Please let me know if anyone CAN access this place as it's been on the
liner notes to the last album AND the brand new one!!!!

Seems to me that if you want someone to like a band, you should give
them a tape of that band, not a tape of a band that has 1 or 2 players
from said band. Call me crazy, but if you want someone to like DT give
them a tape of DT not LTE.

<< follow what is in my head. How can that be wrong? >>
well, if whats in your head is completely messed up, well then...anyway, I thought I'd throw my two cents in on the whole "Music theory" thingy. I don't think that sticking to music theory and using that instead of what you call "emotion" or the stuff in your head is necesarily wrong. If music theory is so broad, covering so much, how can it be limiting if music theory itself has no limits? I agree with the statement John made about hearing stuff in your head and not being able to play it because your technical ability doesn't support it. And let me tell you that gets pretty damn frustrating. I've encountered that dillema myself several times. It is important to master the skills of your instrument in order to fufill your creative desires. Unfortunately, many people don't have the patience to put in the time needed to do this, thats why so many of these "popular" bands aren't good musicians, because they lack the patience to be. Popular music isn't necesarily no-talent. In the 70s bands like Yes, ELP, and Led Zeppelin were popular, did that make them any less talented? I would like popular bands today if they could actually play their instruments well!

To further emphasize the statement below, forget the credits, even they don't do Randy justice. All the songs are basically listed Osborne/Rhoads/Daisley/Kerslake, when in fact, 90-100% of the music was Randy's. I didn't see the post, but if someone said Randy didn't write the music, they are sadly mistaken. Some of the riffs present on Blizzard go back to Randy's Quiet Riot days, in which he wrote most/all of the music. Then he went on to compose the best material of his life, for the Diary of a Madman album. I still have yet to hear a song as well written as "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll".

Hey, just downloaded the soundbite "Willy Brown"
Don't expect another LTE (intstrumental shred fest)
Do expect really good music. If you love Ty Tabor's voice, you'll love this. And if you can't handle the beginning because you need instrumental jams - atleast wait until 2:24 when the band really gets going. It will help you appreciate the song as a whole if the opening isn't your cup of tea. Atleast I hope, because I thought the opening was good from the start. But at 2:24 - the song turned from a good song to a great song.
